DIVERSITY IN OLLI – A COMMON THEME
From the executive director

By Thom Clement, Executive Director
"DIVERSITY" CAN BE DEFINED IN MANY WAYS, and by some measures there is tremendous diversity within OLLI at George Mason University. Certainly, the multitude of life experiences and personal histories among our members is fascinating. OLLI members came to the Washington, DC area from all over the country. However, an article in the newest edition of the annual journal of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, The LLI Review, reminded me of my initial impression when I arrived here one year ago: our membership does not have the kinds of diversity that are reflected in American society in the early 21st century.
The article, "Culture, Community, and Diversity in OLLI: A Case Study," was written by Britta Pejic of the OLLI affiliated with the University of Southern Maine in Portland. The article describes a two-year study whose purpose was to "encourage OLLI at USM and other lifelong learning institutes to think about their communities and to consider ways of developing programming to cultivate diverse membership." She notes that OLLI members perceived a great diversity among their membership based on the traditional "melting pot" of American-born members of Greek, Irish, French, and Italian heritage and a sizable religious mix of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. The membership did not include any African-Americans or Asian participants and very few Buddhists or Muslims, even though these groups were well established in the Portland community. The author asks, "How could a program such as OLLI, with strong growth potential, act to involve these various communities?"
In the article, Ms. Pejic describes how she collected data from three underrepresented populations in the Portland area. Her findings identified several obstacles which stand in the way of increasing diversity: poor English language skills, lower literacy rates and educational levels, and lack of time for the types of lifelong learning activities offered by OLLI. There is not an easy answer for this issue, but it is one that deserves the attention of lifelong learning institutes as we strive to remain relevant for our growing senior population.
If you’d like to read the entire article, you can find it as the first article in The LLI Review, available as a pdf document on the Website of the OLLI National Resource Center at this link: http://usm.maine.edu/olli/national/pdf/LLI-Review-2008.pdf. A copy of the journal is also available for loan from staff at Tallwood, Lake Anne, and Loudoun locations.

NO CONTEST; I LOSE
Board-game aficionados to meet

By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee Chair
THE WEEKS INCLUDING THE HOLIDAYS FOUND ME IN NORWAY … dark, with few hours of daylight in which to "watch" the skiers on the mountains, and dark evenings to play Scrabble. I realized what a terrific mental challenge even that old favorite game can offer and while I was almost, no … always the loser, the play of it stretched our minds, so much so that my Norwegian son-in-law became an addict, and marathons were running through the night.
That made me think again about how much I know some of our OLLI people would like to get a board-game group going and my own determination to facilitate that desire.
My last request to those of you interested in such a group didn’t get a big response, but it did bring suggestions of NEW games that some game-lovers would offer to the mix of old chestnuts we already have. With the likelihood that lack of response was due to other interests absorbing OLLI-member thinking in December, I’m trying one last time to pull this together.
So, on Mon, Jan 19, at 10:00 at the Lake Anne Church and on Wed, Jan 21, at 10:00 at Tallwood, we’ll be looking for game players.
Games of skill, games of chance … whatever the game, I’ll "let" you beat me.
BOOK GROUP
THE OLLI BOOK CLUB will meet on Wed, Jan 14, at 10:00 in TA-2. The book for discussion is The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. It is the story of two families, their choices, their secrets and finally their redemption. (Read book summary and media reviews.)
     All OLLI members are welcome.

INITIAL SILENT AUCTION MEETING
Join us at 12:30 next Thursday
OUR INITIAL MEETING TO TALK ABOUT A POSSIBLE 2009 SILENT AUCTION will be held at 12:30 on Thu, Jan 15, at Tallwood. All interested OLLI members are invited to attend.
Last year's first OLLI Silent Auction in May 2008 was a resounding success because of all the volunteers who helped bring Debbie Halverson's idea to fruition. Not only did the auction bring in close to $5,000 for the Friends of OLLI but it also turned into a nice social event to complement the Annual Membership Meeting and its associated cookout/picnic. If we decide to do the Silent Auction this year, we will need to start promoting it soon so that people can put aside things that they might want to contribute.

Contributed by Executive Director Thom Clement.
