INTERESTED IN "GRAND CAMP"?
From the executive director
By Thom Clement, Executive Director
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE IDEA of grandparents and grandchildren enjoying learning activities together? There has been considerable interest in this idea among lifelong learning institutes and college alumni programs around the country. The Program and Membership Committees of our OLLI at Mason are considering this as a possible event for one day this summer. In order to proceed with planning, they need to know two things: 1) how many OLLI members would be interested in participating with a child; and 2) how many OLLI members would be willing to organize a class or activity for this special day?
To provide us with feedback on these two questions, I encourage you to click on the following online survey link (or copy and paste the following into your Web browser's address field: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZRX57G5).
Click the monkey or click here to take the short survey.

LOST AND FOUND
Find your stray possessions using this new Web site

LOST AND FOUND ... clothing, eyewear, travel cups, umbrellas and more. Whatever gets left behind at Tallwood ends up in the lost-and-found box in the social room. Board member Paul Howard recently recovered his missing ball cap from the bottom of the box and was inspired to create a Web site to make it easier for others to find stray possessions. Paul has posted photographs of the found items, even including handwriting samples in found notebooks!
To search for your lost possessions from the convenience of your warm, cozy home, click here or click "Lost and Found" in the Quick Links table at the left of the OLLI home page and the What's New page.

NEW EXHIBIT IN THE ANNEX
See images by three OLLI photographers
WE ARE STARTING THE NEW YEAR with an exhibit in the Tallwood social room annex of images by three OLLI photographers -- Dan Feighery, Steve Schanzer and Stan Schretter (see the banner image at the top of this newsletter for a preview).
Our objective is to showcase works by OLLI artists during the rest of the year, ending the year with the annual exhibit by OLLI Photography Club members in the fall.

All OLLI artists (oil and watercolor painters, pen and pencil sketchers, photographers, etc.) are welcome to participate in the rotating exhibit in the annex but please note that works must be framed so that they can be hung like those now on display (i.e., with no holes in the wall). Point of contact is Exhibit Coordinator Stan Schretter.

PHILOSOPHY, ETHICS AND RELIGION
Resource group meets on Monday; all are invited
THE PHILOSOPHY, ETHICS AND RELIGION RESOURCE GROUP will meet at 10:00 this Monday, January 11, at Tallwood. The purpose of this meeting is to find instructors and to plan classes in the subject areas of philosophy, ethics and religion for the upcoming summer and fall sessions in 2010. All OLLI members are invited to attend resource group meetings.
If you have a particular interest in these subjects and also if you are acquainted with talented clergy, philosophers or ethics majors who you think might be willing to teach at OLLI, please do join us. We would love to have your input.

Resource group co-chairs are Abbie Edwards, Steve Goldman and Bob Lawshe. Contact any of them for more information.

TALLWOOD BOOK CLUB
Meets Wed, Jan 13: Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner
THE TALLWOOD BOOK CLUB WILL MEET at 10:00 on Wednesday, January 13, at Tallwood. The book for discussion is Crossing to Safety by Pulitzer Prize (1972) winning author Wallace Stegner. It is the story of the lifetime friendship of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin. Google books information available at this Web page.
     All OLLI members are welcome.

Contributed by Book Club Coordinator Ceda McGrew.

OLLI COMPUTER CLUB
Meets Sat, Jan 16: presentations on
Favorite Web Sites and 2010 Consumer Electronics Show

By Paul Howard, OLLI Computer Club Coordinator
THE OLLI COMPUTER CLUB WILL MEET on Saturday, January 16, from 12:30 to 3:30 in TA-1. The Club (officially, the OLLI Personal Computer User Group) meets jointly with the Washington Area Computer User Group (WACUG, or WAC). Annual club dues of $5 for 2010 will be collected at this meeting. Two presentations are planned for this month--
  • Favorite Web Sites. Since the Web has billions or gazillions -- nobody really knows how many -- of individual pages, it's nearly impossible to find the "best" Web site for a given purpose. But Google searches often find gems because they rank pages by popularity: pages to which many sites link are deemed better than "orphan" pages not linked. Another way to find useful/interesting/fun pages is to share favorites with others. This presentation highlights Web sites that one experienced Web traveler, Gabe Goldberg, visits often. Bring your own top Web sites to share with the audience!
  • 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. Geof Goodrum, WAC's intrepid trade show reporter, will once again regale us with the latest technology offerings from the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show, being held now (January 7-10) in Las Vegas (photo at right). CES is the world’s largest consumer technology trade show, with more than 2,500 exhibitors displaying more than 20,000 products. Come on January 16 to hear about all the latest gizmos and gadgets, giant TVs, and electronic bells and whistles.
All OLLI members are welcome to visit; we encourage them to join the OLLI Personal Computer User Group and attend regularly.
