OLLI AND THE SEARCH FOR FULFILLMENT
From the executive director
IN THEIR BOOK Shaping a Life of Significance for
Retirement, authors R. Jack Hensen and Jerry P. Haas identify
four key areas that determine how successfully people adjust to their
"smaller" world after retirement:
- Authority and
responsibility – "leaving a position in which others depend upon your
judgment or expertise"
- Influence – a
more limited sphere of significant impact on the lives of people
- Interactions
– a reduction in meaningful contacts with interesting people
- Recognition –
changes in appreciation for your contributions
In order to maintain fulfillment during the
retirement years, each of us needs to find ways to adjust to these
changes. For thousands of seniors, a large part of the solution is active involvement in lifelong
learning institutes such as OLLI at George Mason. Notice that I
emphasized the word "active." One's level of fulfillment is directly
correlated to the extent of involvement – not only by taking courses
but also by volunteering to serve other participants through using
one's time, talent and energy for the benefit of the group. As I write
today at Tallwood, I am surrounded by OLLI members answering the phone,
raking leaves and hauling branches, and preparing for the fall term by
discussing courses in a resource-group meeting. Through their
involvement, these OLLI members are sharing knowledge, exerting
influence, interacting with interesting people and earning appreciation
for their contributions to our wonderful Institute.
I can't wait to see you for our exciting
spring term at OLLI!

NOMINATING COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES
CANDIDATES
For 2011 Board of Directors election
 By Dick Young,
2011 Nominating Committee Chair
IN
ANTICIPATION OF THE ANNUAL ELECTION in
May, the Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the slate of
candidates for the 2011 Board of Directors election.
The eight candidates for six open positions on
the 18-member Board are Wendy Campbell, Gordon Canyock, Ernestine
Meyer, Manny Pablo, Martha Scanlon, Nancy Scheeler, Imogene Willis and
Bob Zener ( photos shown below).
Those elected will serve a three-year term. After this election, the
newly constituted Board will elect the OLLI officers.
Members of the Nominating Committee are very
pleased with the slate. All of the nominees are highly capable members
who have already contributed greatly to OLLI. Their abilities and their
willingness to serve on the Board bode well for OLLI's future.
OLLI members will have an opportunity to learn
more about the nominees from the Candidates' Page that will be posted
on the Web site, on posters that will be displayed at all sites, at a
Reston/Loudoun meet-the-candidates meeting at Reston on Friday, April
29, and at the annual membership meeting at Tallwood on Friday, May 6.
Details of these events will be announced regularly, posted on the Web
site and published in OLLI E-News.
Nomination
by petition. OLLI's Procedures and
Guidelines for the Nominating Committee also allow for nominations by
petition. To be added to the ballot, a petition candidate must receive
written support from at least one percent of the membership, or 10
members. Petition nominations must be received by the Nominating
Committee by Friday, April 8. Any such nomination may be submitted to
me
or any other member of the Nominating Committee: Debbie Halverson,
Rosemary McDonald, Ted Parker, Mary Ann Seesholtz and Kathie West.

A COUPLE OF OLLI
VOLUNTEERS
Profile
of Carol and Eric
Henderson

By Carolyn Sanders, OLLI E-News
Staff Writer
HENDERSON IS A BIG
NAME where
I come from, but that's another tale! What we're interested in are the
OLLI Hendersons, Carol and Eric, and that's a big story.
These two Ohioans joined OLLI in 2000 and are
beginning their eleventh year of faithful service to our favorite
organization.
The Lady Henderson served on the OLLI Board of
Directors for two terms (i.e., six years) and was secretary for two
years. She also chaired the search committee that resulted in the
hiring of Thom Clement as OLLI executive director. Big-time thanks for that, Carol!
She has also taught courses on mystery writers, and since 2002 she has
joined Jan Dewire in moderating an ongoing short-story discussion
class, the famed Literary Roundtable that meets in Reston.
Eric, Carol's spouse of 52 years, is also no
slouch in the volunteer structure of OLLI. He not only co-chairs the
Art and Music Resource Group but also is a member of the Special Events
Resource Group. And he shares his interests in wine and gourmet food by
leading trips to wineries and special lunch spots – and by teaching
wine courses. Let's drink to that!
When a scheduled instructor in an "I Was
There" course failed to show up, Eric agreed to fill in. My sources say
that the class was absolutely enthralled with his on-the-spot review of
the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, in which he was involved. That
outstanding presentation is to be repeated at the Loudoun campus this
summer.
Both Hendersons are graduates of Ohio State
University, and both have a master's degree in library science from The
Catholic University of America (Washington, DC). Eric's career was with
the CIA's National Photographic Interpretation Center. It began with
the discovery of missiles in Cuba, included time spent teaching
management and supervision, and wound up with his serving as chief of
the Reference Services Division. Carol served as executive director of
the Washington office of the American Library Association. Earlier, she
was a librarian at George Mason University, and she now serves on the
Advisory Board for the Mason Libraries.
Just for fun, ask about their granddaughter—an
eight-year-old adopted from China. The Henderson's daughters live
in Winchester and Richmond, so visiting their parents in the "historic
district" of Lake Anne in Reston is an easy trip.
I salute Carol and Eric—they make that other
bunch I mentioned appear just a wee bit lazy.
