NEW
FLOWERS, NEW WEATHER, NEW MEMBERS
Welcome from the president
 By Debbie Halverson, President
WITH GREAT PLEASURE
we are looking forward to Monday when we can all
gather at Tallwood and Reston to begin our spring term. This year we
have the added enjoyment of welcoming new members from Loudoun County
to the classes at the OLLI-Mason site there.
I can’t wait to start the many classes I
picked out from our
wonderful list this spring. Once again, our program committees have put
together an amazing catalog of learning experiences.
One of the traditions at OLLI is the New
Member Coffee on the
first Friday of the new term. Of course, this means that not only new
members but all members are welcome to attend our spring event on
Friday, March 30 at 10:30 at Tallwood. New members, be sure to
wear your name tags with the red dots so that veteran members will
realize you are new and will enjoy greeting you. Board members and
committee chairs will be offering information about activities at OLLI;
you may learn something new that isn’t in the catalog. And the
food will be great as always. |
Everyone, enjoy your weekend; back to
school
on Monday!

Last week's Board of Directors meeting
 By Carol Henderson, Secretary
AT THE MAR 16
BOARD MEETING, President Debbie Halverson made several
announcements. On behalf of Richard Lanterman, chair of the Nominating
Committee, she announced the committee’s slate of candidates for the
OLLI Board: Joan Axilbund, Joe Cowden, Emmett Fenlon, Debbie Halverson,
Bob Lawshe, Rosemary McDonald, Ed Mentz, Al Roe and John Woods. Debbie
welcomed Jack Underhill as an appointed member of the Board to fill out
the term of Don Yesukaitis, who resigned. She announced that
Ben Gold
had resigned as chair of the Facilities Committee since he has become
the chair of the Reston Resource Group.
The Board dissolved the Facilities Committee
and established a Landscaping Committee. This was done because the
functions of the Facilities Committee, except for the landscaping of
the Tallwood grounds, are now handled by the executive director
and staff. The
Board defeated a proposal to change the winter closing policy to
following the George Mason University Fairfax Campus from the current
policy of following the Fairfax County School System.
The Board agreed with a Planning Committee
recommendation that the dues for the Loudoun pilot program for the
summer will be $50. Any person who participates in the spring program,
the summer program or both, may apply the sum of their Loudoun fee
payments against a regular full year OLLI membership commencing in the
fall 2007. Regular OLLI members will continue to be able to attend
Loudoun pilot program courses with no additional fee on a
space-available basis.
Executive director Dick Chobot announced he
has been able to replace the insurance policy for OLLI directors and
officers with a broader-coverage policy that includes all volunteers
acting in an
official or sanctioned capacity, in addition to directors, officers
and employees. |
The April Board meeting will take place on
Fri, Apr 27 at 10:00 at Tallwood. This is a change from the
previous date of Apr 21, because on that date Debbie and Dick Chobot
will attend a conference in Atlanta of the 115 Osher Lifelong Learning
Institutes throughout the country. OLLI members are welcome to attend
the Apr 27 Board meeting. Debbie schedules a period near the end of
the agenda for public comments.
THE GREATEST
GENERATION
Fifth in our WW II veterans series

By Barbara Kyriakakis, OLLI
E-News assistant editor
BORN IN A LOG CABIN IN THE MIDDLE OF A
COTTON PATCH in
Southeastern Alabama, David Watson
spent his youth working long hours on his parents’ farm. In 1943 at age
17, with only a ninth-grade education, he enlisted in the Navy. After
basic training in Pensacola, Florida, he was assigned to the Yard
Department at the Pensacola Naval Air Station.
David did not see combat action during his
three-plus years in the Navy. Working as a swabbie on a crash boat
rigged with giant cranes, he and his crew picked up aviators and their
planes when they went down during training in Pensacola. Subsequently,
he was assigned to the administrative office where he did a variety of
jobs, such as processing security passes, writing up cases of jailed
servicemen, presenting them to the captain at captain’s mast, attending
the hearings, recording the sentences and documenting all into the
system.
David was shipped to the Pacific in 1945. In
San Diego he served on USS Mobile
(CL-63), a Cleveland-class light cruiser, which picked up servicemen
from Guam and took them to San Francisco. Assigned to the Bremerton
Group of the 19th Fleet, he was transferred to USS Greyhound after Mobile was deactivated. Greyhound,
originally a civilian coastal passenger ship, served as headquarters
for determining the fate of venerable old ships such as Mobile.
Discharged in 1946 as a petty officer second
class, David took correspondence courses at the University of Alabama
where he got his high-school diploma. He received a BS in Math and
Physical Sciences as well as a Teacher’s Certificate at Troy
University, Troy, Alabama, and his MA at Vanderbilt University’s
Peabody College, Nashville, Tennessee. He received a commission in the
Air Force Reserve in December of 1950 and retired as a major after a
total of 20 years’ military service, including active duty. He has been
an OLLI member for three years.
(Collage
above shows David in 1945 and 2007 and Mobile in late 1945.)
A "RED LETTER" DAY
Welcoming our new members

By Elizabeth Crawford, OLLI
E-News staff writer
WHAT
BRINGS A NEW MEMBER TO OLLI?
Maybe it is a passion
for learning. Maybe it is excitement at
the prospect of new friends. Maybe it is the realization that there is
no better place for retirees to share and renew their energy.
Whatever the reason, a red dot is
appropriate to indicate your presence at OLLI. Welcome to--

OLLI
E-News
is the "newsletter for the members of OLLI." We need your help to
continue to be able to inform, educate and stimulate our readers.
If
you have an idea
for an article that is related to OLLI and that you think would be of
interest to the membership, please submit it to the editor. If the
suggestion is accepted, we will see if one of our OLLI-member
staff-writers
would be willing to write the article.
Better yet, if we accept your suggestion, you
might want to write
the article yourself. You can submit it on a one-time basis ... or
we'll be happy to have you join the Publications Committee as an OLLI E-News staff writer. The pay
is good, and you'll get your own byline and photo published.
Please submit to the editor or to deputy editor Karen

PARKING WILL BE TIGHT ... BE CONSIDERATE
The parking challenge
 By Dick Chobot,
Executive Director
PARKING AT TALLWOOD HAS BECOME A
CHALLENGE. You are aware of the crowding in the lot in
front of the building. You also may have noted that the pool lot has
been broken up by the construction of the new pool. We expect that the
lot will be re-paved and striped once pool construction is complete.
When parking at OLLI for the spring term,
please keep in mind the following:
- Park so as
not to block the entry/exit to Tallwood and the
pool site.
- Please do not
block the driveway that goes to the rear of
the Tallwood main building. If you do, we will find you and revoke
cookie privileges.
- Try to
preserve the handicapped and close-in slots for the
members who have mobility challenges.
- If you must
come around the back of the Tallwood buildings
either to park or to drop off materials, use the convex mirror in the
driveway to see ahead. There are pedestrians walking.
- If you have
health or mobility problems and require that a
space be held for you, please see Ann. We will do this on a day-by day
basis. We also have to hold one or more spaces in the back for speakers.
- Recognize
that there may still be construction equipment
coming in to the pool site. Please respect any cone set-ups that the
workers place in the lot.
- If you park
in the neighborhoods, please leave space
near residential driveways, and cross Roberts Road carefully.
We look forward to seeing you back at OLLI next week.

About OLLI
E-News. OLLI
E-News, OLLI's weekly newsletter, is emailed to OLLI
members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in
session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in
classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI
members and
staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to
the editor is 7:00 PM Wed for that week's issue. Comments,
suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI
E-News editor or the
Publications Committee chair, Gordon
Canyock.
Note
about HTML graphics. If
you do NOT see
photos and
clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged
grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things
for you. Or you could change your
email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages
like this newsletter in
three popular email systems:
- Outlook
Express.
Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all
messages in plain text."
- Yahoo
Mail.
Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block
HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
- AOL.
Upgrade,
if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.
GMU Webmail.
If OLLI E-News is being sent
to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against
using GMU Webmail
(i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read this newsletter
because it
is normally impossible to view the newsletter in GMU
Webmail
as a single
integrated
document, with text and accompanying images. You could forward the
newsletter to your Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail or
Hotmail and read it there ... or just read it online at
the OLLI
Website after it is posted
each week.
Perhaps the easiest solution for those of you with GMU email accounts
is to configure your desktop email system such
as Microsoft Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve mail
sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these
instructions.
Finding
the Latest
Issue Online. The
new weekly issue of OLLI E-News
is
usually posted Thursday evening. Here's how to read the online version
right after
it is posted:
- It is identified by
the next number in
sequence for that year -- e.g., if last week's issue number were
enews1-07, the next issue number would be enews2-07 and could be found
at www.olli.gmu.edu/enews2-07.htm.
- Thus, go to the list of the last 12
issues, click the most recent issue (probably last week's), change
(in the address field of your browser) the enews number to the next
number, and then press Enter.
