SHARE YOUR SKILLS—TUTOR A STUDENT WHO WANTS TO LEARN
Mason's Early Identification Program
EACH YEAR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS in Mason’s
Early Identification Program (EIP) struggle against
substantial odds to qualify for a college education. These students
have the academic ability to attend college, but for a variety of
reason—e.g., immigrant parents, no history of college attendance in the
family—need extra help and support to realize their dream. The EIP
partners with the Northern Virginia school systems to provide a
four-year program for these students which includes a three-week summer
academy at Mason as well as programs and tutoring throughout the school
year.
EIP need tutors for the program. Two opportunities for OLLI members are
available:
- Register
as a tutor in the subjects of your choice.
EIP will
contact you when a student is in need of a few weeks tutoring.
- Volunteer
to tutor on a regular basis for the 14-week
fall or spring school semester.
Occasional volunteers can meet their students
at their school, a
library, or at the EIP office on Mason’s campus. Regular volunteers
generally meet with students after school at their high school.
If you have time to help some wonderful young
people, please contact EIP’s Veronica
Covarrubias (phone, 703-993-3120).

OLLI member Helen Ackerman for providing the above information to us. |

"AMERICAN SONG" ON FRIDAYS AT 9:30
One of many still-open courses
 By Michael Coyne, OLLI Webmaster
BILL
DEARY'S CLASS ON "AMERICAN SONG" is an example of this term's
Friday classes. Bill has lined up music of America's most popular songs
from a hundred years ago. The music will be presented on the TA-1
piano,
recently tuned, by Jeanne Agee. The class will be invited to sing along
to the words Bill will project on the screen.
To Bill, a PhD in American history, the class
will be more than a sing-along. He has arranged the music by period and
type:
- Music
about the new emancipation of women in America as the result of the fad
of bicycling;
- Music
about World War I; and
- Music
about the population move from the country to the city, with rubes from
the farm showing up on the streets of New York.
This promises to be one of OLLI's most-talked-about classes of
the spring term.
DRAMA CLUB
A new club for OLLI
| OLLI DRAMA CLUB TO BE FORMED |
THE FIRST MEETING
of the newly formed OLLI Drama Club will be held at on
Fri, Apr 14, at 1:00 in TA-3. (Beginning in May, the club’s meeting
time will move to Friday mornings.)
The club will focus on the exploration of
serious theatrical works. Club participants will spend time reading
plays and delving into character interpretation, diction and
projection. In addition to the club’s regular meeting time,
participants will likely spend additional time rehearsing their roles.
The purpose of the club is to permit an
in-depth involvement by those who are willing to put time into a
well-rehearsed piece. The format will be similar to Readers’ Theatre
but with focus on serious drama, resulting in the performance of
full-length plays, one-act plays and longer scenes. The club will read
plays by contemporary playwrights such as Auburn, Churchill and
Stoppard as well as the works of traditional
and/or historical
playwrights such as Lorca, Euripides, Beckett and others.
An end goal would be the formation of a group
that takes theatre to people who do not have an opportunity to partake
of this wonderful pastime.
Interested OLLI members should contact
Kathie West or Charles Duggan for more information or simply join us on

NEW PLAY ABOUT ALZHEIMER'S
See the free premiere performance at
Mason's Harris Theater
| SIX CHARACTERS IN
SEARCH OF AN ANSWER |
A
new play, Six Characters in Search
of an Answer, features a poignant dramatization of ethical
issues of people living with Alzheimer’s disease. The play is written
by Dr. Jeanne Sorrell, Professor of Nursing in the College of Nursing
and Health Science at George Mason University, and is based on her
research.
Dr. Sorrell interviewed persons with
Alzheimer’s, as well as family and professional caregivers, to identify
important ethical issues that they encounter in the process of living
with Alzheimer’s disease. Dialogue from the interviews is enacted in
the play by six characters who engage the audience in thinking about
the quality of life of those living with Alzheimer’s.
The premiere
performance of the play, directed
by Rick Davis, Artistic Director of the Theater of the First Amendment,
will be held Thu, Apr 6, in the Harris Theatre on the Fairfax
campus of
George Mason University. A pre-performance discussion will be held at
1:30 featuring a panel of representatives from ethics, health policy,
and theater. The performance of the play will begin at 2:00 pm. A
reception will follow the performance.
This event was made possible by a grant from
the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. There is no charge for the
event and the public is invited to attend. For further information,
please call Edna Hertsch at 703-993-1947 or email Jeanne Sorrell. |

MASON HIGHLIGHTS
A brief listing of other upcoming events

AND
THE MASON PATRIOTS MOVE ON TO THE FINAL FOUR!
Electricity permeated every corner of the Mason Campus last Sun evening
as word of their victory over #1 seed University of Connecticut
flew across campus.
As I drove around Patriot circle in an attempt
to
get off campus, I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of cheerful
jubilation by the students. A cacophony of honking horns and happy,
screaming students turtled traffic, making it impossible to exit
quickly, but also impossible not to smile and enjoy being a part of the
Mason Mania.
Join in the fun: Read all about the Patriots
win in the Mason Gazette along
with other Mason news.
| Forum on the State of
Mason Academics. Is there anything else going on at Mason
besides basketball? Maybe nothing as exciting, but on Mon, Apr 10, from
3:00 to 4:00 in the Johnson Center Cinema, the Provost's forum on the
State of Mason Academics will take place. This forum will provide an
opportunity for exchange between the provost, relevant members of his
staff, and the University community. Initial remarks at this forum will
focus on the state of the University budget and reorganization of
colleges. Other topics are available for questions, including the state
of the campuses in Loudoun
and in Ras Al Khaimah
(check out the photo album on this
Website --Ed.). Light refreshments
will be served. |
Cinema Series.
On Fri, Mar 31,
and Sat, Apr 1, Memoirs of a Geisha
will be
playing in the Johnson Cinema. This excellent movie is not to be
missed. Due to the Final Four basketball game on Sat, it will only be
shown
at 9:00 on Sat but will be shown at 6:00 and 9:00 on Fri. As usual, $1
with Mason ID and
free popcorn. What a bargain! What a movie! |
