BOARD
HIGHLIGHTS
About last Friday's Board meeting
THE OLLI
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
met at Tallwood on Fri, Mar 28. Bob Bohall, Chair of the Nominating
Committee, presented the slate of candidates for the Board, listed in
random order:
David Mason, Manuel Pablo, Bob Persell,
Ben Gold, Jack Underhill, Kathleen Meyer, and Kathie West [note: this
list does not include one announced candidate who subsequently withdrew]
|
Bob further pointed out that the nominating procedures allow for
nominations by petition, which must be submitted to the Committee by
Fri, Apr 11. One percent of the OLLI membership, or eight OLLI members,
must sign any such petition.
Debbie Halverson reported on the planning of
the silent auction and picnic. They are scheduled on the same day as
the
annual membership meeting (Fri, May 2) but will not be ongoing during
the time of
the annual meeting. The auction will begin at 9:00 and temporarily
close down at 10:00 when the annual meeting is scheduled to begin.
After the meeting has concluded, the auction will reopen, and the
picnic will begin.
Debbie is looking for volunteers and donations for the auction.
Thom Clement reported on current membership
statistics. We currently have 754 OLLI members. 671 members have
registered for spring term classes; of these, 43 percent registered
online.
Loudoun will have an open house on Tue, Apr 1.
Our goal for Loudoun is
full integration of the schedule, registration, catalog, and membership
dues by the winter term. This fall, Loudoun will be on the same
schedule as Tallwood/Reston, and the OLLI catalog will include an
insert with Loudoun courses so prospective Loudoun attendees can see
the full range of course offerings.
The Board approved two
resolutions, one allocating $3,312 from Friends of OLLI funds
for upgrades and enhancements to Tallwood’s computer network and the other allocating $7,625 from Friends of OLLI funds
for upgrades and enhancements to OLLI’s audiovisual instructional
resources.
The next meeting of the OLLI Board of Directors will be held at
Tallwood on Fri, Apr 18, at 10:00. All OLLI members are invited to
attend.
SILENT AUCTION PLANS ARE BUZZING
More ideas to consider
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee Chair
HOORAY
FOR YOU! Offers of donations to the Silent Auction on
May 2 are starting to come through. Many of you have done some creative
thinking about what you can give like a collection of special books,
or a beautiful quilt, or something you can do for others. The spirit of
giving for a good cause, our own OLLI, is in the air.
But you needn’t act alone. You and a friend
can join forces and think of what together you could do for others such
as serve high tea at someone’s birthday party, or bake that
spectacular Black Forest cake that everyone raves about for someone’s
mother’s Mother’s Day celebration, or take photos at that party for a
keepsake album.
You could offer to write letters for someone
whose handwriting skills are gone, baby sit, clean gutters, or
install window air conditioning units. You might offer your back yard
to an apartment dweller who wants to have a family reunion. Offer
gardening advice or dig holes in someone’s garden for their spring
plants; teach someone how to use Excel; knit a baby blanket and put it
into a basket with a Teddy bear and baby rattle.
See where I’m going with this? Very soon you
will see stacks of donation forms in the classrooms and social room for
you to fill out. When you fill one out, you will be asked to indicate
the
fair market value of what you are offering. Make a best guess, and the
committee can alter that if it seems too high or too low. The beginning
auction price will be set below that figure with hopes that the bidding
will climb sky high because your item will be so desirable. Alongside
the pile of forms will be a folder; put your form inside that and
a committee member will be in touch.
Whether you give as a single donor or as a
member of a group, your generosity will benefit the Friends of OLLI
Fund. Once we get a substantial list of pledges, we’ll publicize it on
the Web site and throughout the OLLI campus buildings. It would be
helpful to have a digital photo if your gift is photographable. And
there are tax advantages, according to the values involved, to making
these contributions.
We’re waiting to hear from you. Thanks a
lot!

EYE ON RESTON
Notes for Restonites
THIS
MONDAY, APR 7,
at 9:30, Fairfax County Supervisor Kathy Hudgins (photo at left) will be the speaker
in course #903, "Your County/Your Home," at Lake Anne. She will be
providing insight into the senior programs that the county makes
available to us. In addition she will discuss the current issues and
opportunities facing the Reston community. There are 15 people
registered for this program. Although you may not be one of the 15, we
have room, so come join us for what will be a very interesting session.
Calling all
Restonites: We are going to build a strong OLLI in Reston and we
need your involvement. There are opportunities for volunteers in the
areas of planning trips, communications, public relations, social
events, and participation in a resource group. For more information,
contact Debbie Halverson, Sheila Gold or
Al Roe.
COFFEE
ATTENDEES CROWD ANNEX
A successful New Members' Coffee
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee Chair

New Members' Coffee on Mar 28. Photos
by Gordon Canyock.
LET'S
FACE IT! Our members love to party.
More than 35 members, new and ongoing, crammed
into the social room and annex last Friday at the New Members' Coffee.
People crowded around a table that the hospitality committee had laid
with a banquet of goodies. They elbowed through the crowd eager to
shake hands with new members, welcoming them to the OLLI family. It was
good to visit with friends we’d not seen on campus since the close of
winter term. We heard the usual speeches urging people to
volunteer and giving advice on what to do to make the OLLI experience
most successful.
If you missed this great event, then there is
always the next one scheduled for the first Friday of the summer term.
Meanwhile, look for the red dot on new member name tags and reach out
to make a new friend.
BE CAREFUL IN THE PARKING LOTS!
Maneuver slowly in tight spaces
PLEASE PAY CLOSE
ATTENTION when opening your car door to avoid 'dinging' an
adjacent car, and be especially careful when backing out of your
parking space. Reverse very carefully, and be alert. You do not want to
damage another member's car, whether it's a Jaguar or a clunker.
Note. This week a member observed
another member reversing slowly out a space in the pool parking lot and
then hitting the car behind, shaking it; the member did not get out to
inspect for any damage or leave a note; the member just drove off --
both discourteous and probably illegal.

THE APRIL FOOL
SPOOF
Some reader reactions
By Rod Zumbro, OLLI E-News Editor
WE ARE
PLEASED THAT MOST OF YOU ENJOYED OUR APRIL
FOOL'S DAY SPOOF EDITION of OLLI
E-News (available online at http://www.olligmu.org/enews1Apr08.htm
for those who missed Tuesday's email newsletter). We had
fun creating it in the spirit of trying
to 'lighten up' things at OLLI, with no harm
intended. A few members expressed
their disapproval of our frivolity, but most email responses received
were
supportive, as quoted here--
- Hilarious!
Great OLLI E-News!
I was confused at first but realized right away it is April 1. Thanks
for a wonderful laugh and making April Fool's Day just what it is.
- This is
wonderful. All who participated deserve high praise.
- It was
hilarious and very clever and probably took a lot of time to put
together. Took me a few seconds to realize it was a spoof, but the fact
I received it on a Tuesday sort of made me wary.
- Love
your
April Fool e-news!
- Great
job. I
loved it. I have just
rewritten my will, leaving several million to OLLI. Happy April's Fool
Day to you.
- I fell
for
the NEWS for about 24 hours.
- Thanks
to
everyone whose sense of humor contributed to this special issue. (I
wonder how many will miss their Tallwood classes this week?)
- A
literary classic.
- What a
hoot!
LOL! ["Laughing Out Loud"]
- Bravo -
a tour de farce!
- Somebody
went
to a lot of trouble for an April Fool's Day scenario. Reminds me of
Orson Welles scaring everybody half to death in the 'thirties, though
this is nothing like that. Oh well!
- Kudos
for
this great spoof!
|
- I
forgot to
hide my husband's car this morning, so this made my day! This
newsletter is just TOO FUNNY! Love it!
- Thanks
for
the smiles! Very funny -- loved the photos of [the board members]!
- Well,
you
folks worked overtime to put together your April Fools Day edition!
Lots of chuckles. I was taken in for about 30 seconds, with the fake
photo of before and after Tallwood, thinking that it was reporting on
some actual past event, then
came the a-ha moment.
- Enjoyed
your
April Fool news! Good for a laugh.
- You
guys are
the greatest! All too clever, with just the edge of truth to it. We're
lucky to have you! I had just a moment of disorientation when I saw it,
thinking I had lost time between Tuesday and Friday.
- Great
newsletter. Quite a hoot. Thanks for the laughs ... There will always
be staff coffee available (we have the power)! And thanks for the two,
yes, two, Ann Hartmann Days. I suggest festivals with troubadours and
kites and cakes and diet lime cokes!
- [From
another staff employee] Thanks. That was a great issue, and you made us
all laugh! I
am disappointed, however, that I didn’t get a day!

BOOK CLUB
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
THE
OLLI BOOK CLUB will be meeting at Tallwood on Wed, Apr 9, at
1:30. The book for discussion is Water for Elephants by Sara
Gruen. It is the story of a traveling circus during the Great
Depression. All OLLI members are welcome.
WALKING/HIKING
SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP...
Gets off to a running start
THE
FIRST MEETING
of the Walking/Hiking Special Interest Group was a success; we did get
our feet in the door and giant forward strides were made. Several
future activities are planned, with the prospect of more to follow
later in the spring.
New Tallwood
Walking Group: To accommodate those who do not join in the
weekly Tuesday 8:30 AM walks from Tallwood due to schedule conflicts or
avoidance of heavy morning rush-hour traffic, we will add a second
weekly walk, the new one on a mid-day schedule. Our second weekly
walking group will meet on Wed, Apr 9, at 1:00 (and subsequent
Wednesdays during the spring term) in the swimming pool parking lot. We
will leave the lot at 1:05, walk in the Tallwood surroundings for
approximately 45 minutes, and return to Tallwood by 1:45 or in time for
any scheduled Wednesday 2:00 OLLI special events. Note that interested
walkers are very welcome to join either the Tuesday morning or
Wednesday afternoon group or both groups.
Weekend
Walking: many of us enjoy taking longer walks, and we have
scheduled a hike at Bull Run Regional Park, Centreville, on the morning
of Sun, Apr 13, to view the much-admired Virginia Bluebells and other
spring wildflowers. More information, e.g., starting time, meeting
place, etc. will be forthcoming in OLLI
E-News, but if interested please do contact Sherry Hart or Doris
Bloch.
This event is likely to be followed by other spring hikes. Numerous
suggestions for future locations were discussed, and members of the
group are scouting out logistics for these.
Our pace is accelerating; watch our dust, as
we are definitely going places.
LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
A forum for members to voice their views
on OLLI matters
WE
WILL
PUBLISH your brief letters about OLLI and, if
a response seems appropriate, we will include an OLLI response from the
executive director or the applicable officer or committee
chair in the same issue. Submit your letter via email to the editor or
submit it as a "letter to the editor" via
the online
suggestion box or the suggestion box in the Tallwood Social Room.
To be published in a given Friday's issue, the editor must receive the
letter no later than 7:00 pm on Monday so that any applicable OLLI
response can also be published. Letters can be published
anonymously but you must include your name and email address or phone
number so we can verify that you are an OLLI member.

A compliment about landscaping

OLLIwood
gardens, Apr 1 . Photos by Gordon
Canyock.
During my first visit to Tallwood in late February to register, I
noticed how wonderful the landscaping looked. It was evident even then
that someone had put a lot of thought and time into making the grounds
look great. While attending the new member coffee this morning [Mar
28], I once
again thought how wonderful everything looked with the new growth and
buds popping out. It certainly made me feel welcome.
