FOR THE JOY OF LEARNING
From the executive
director
WE HAVE SOMETHING VERY PRECIOUS at
the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University.
The mission of OLLI is to offer to its members
learning opportunities in a stimulating environment in which adults can:
- Share their
talents, experiences and skills,
- Explore new
interests,
- Discover and
develop latent abilities,
- Engage in
intellectual and cultural pursuits, and
- Socialize
with others of similar interests.
Why? This is what defines us – we do
this for the sheer joy of
learning!
I was involved in a conversation with an
acquaintance who is in his late 30’s, deeply involved with earning a
living and keeping up with the busy schedules of his four school-age
children. As is often the case, our conversation turned to OLLI. I’ll
never forget the blank expression on his face when I told him that OLLI
members truly want to listen to college-level lectures and spend hours
in the classroom setting. "You mean they sign up for classes and they
don’t have to?" he asked. Obviously he didn't get it. Maybe he will
when he reaches the phase in life when learning can be seen as pure
pleasure rather than a requirement.
Let us celebrate what makes us unique – the
shared experience of joyful learning!

YOUR VOTE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Ballots will be mailed later this
month, but BEFORE you cast your vote, learn about the nine candidates running for the six open positions on your Board of
Directors. Here's how:
- Read their biographies (see this Web page or see posters in social rooms at
our sites), and
- Attend one of the upcoming "Meet
the
Candidates" meetings – at Reston on May 1 and at Tallwood
on May 8
(during the Annual Membership Meeting).

THE TOM SWIFT SQUAD WANTS
YOU!
|
|
Volunteers needed for AV Support Committee
ONE
OF OLLI'S MERRY BANDS OF VOLUNTEERS
is the Audiovisual Support Committee, aka The Tom Swift Squad. We help
the staff in resolving
any difficulties that may arise in our classes with audiovisual (AV)
resources. The Tom Swift Squad also helps with the
implementation of new AV
capabilities such as the instructor public-address systems that were
recently added to classrooms at our Loudoun campus. We're looking into
technologies to provide "webinars"
– i.e., remote Web meeting capabilities
– between our various campus locations.
You can help. You don't need a PhD in
electrical engineering or computer
science
– we'll train you in an hour or two to be able to make a contribution
in dealing with issues that pop up during classes and events with
OLLI’s computers and AV gear.
Our members include: George
Addison, Michael Coyne, Don Ferret, Bob Helland, Paul Howard, Harriet
Kaplan, Ernestine Meyer, Jim Miller, Manny Pablo, Tely Psitos, Ruth
Ruttenberg, and John West.
Please contact either of the committee's
co-chairs, Manny Pablo
or Paul Howard, if
you're interested in becoming a "Swiftie!"

JUST DOING MY JOB
Cheering for OLLI
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee Chair
SO NOW, DEAR NEW MEMBERS, YOU ARE
BEGINNING TO REALIZE what being an OLLI member means. Of
course, that experience will be unique to each of our over 800 members,
but very likely by the middle of their first year, new members will
realize the scope of opportunities that are available to them as they
try out new OLLI activities.
In my case, at first I tried the really big
classes, where we had some impressive dignitaries speaking on a wide
range of topics. I liked the smaller lecture classes where I learned in
depth about an aspect of American history, and I was able to get into
the Music Sampler class that brought tears to my face when nine Mason
vocalists offered their amazing voices to TA-1. What a privilege! I
make
it a habit on Monday afternoons to listen to music at Lake Anne, and
whenever possible, I take an art class, just to keep my watercolor
brush active. I love the bus trips to interesting places, and I enjoy
coffee room banter with friends between classes.
Once I realized how much fun it is to teach –
whether a writing course or a literature course – I found a new part of
me
that had never surfaced before.
The OLLI promise is unique to all as we each
explore what interests us most. I love the add-ons, the clubs … those
drama people have a fine time … and the photographers are a talented
lot.
You can walk mornings before class with the walkers, and you can stroll
down the garden path that the Dirty Knee Club has fashioned as an
opportunity for you to collect your thoughts alone or with a friend.
You can go to a party, Holiday or Valentine; you can take classes at
any of the three sites, like a computer or art class in Loudoun; you
can volunteer to work in the office and make new OLLI friends there;
you can write, edit or take photos for the E-News.
You can participate in special activities like
the silent auction, or you can join the money managers in the
investment group to figure out what to do with your spare change.
One of my jobs as membership chair is to cheer
for OLLI at outside events, not difficult when I have so much material
to work with. My next job is to ask each of you to join in this
celebration of OLLI to those you meet along the way who haven’t yet
found us. Give them a refreshing new idea to spark up their lives. If
your enthusiasm is anywhere near to mine, next thing you know it,
they’ll be sitting beside you in class.
E-NEWS STAFF RESIGNATION
|
OLLI MEMBER KAREN HAMILTON
has resigned as associate editor of OLLI
E-News for health reasons. She has been a key member of the
editorial staff for almost four years, serving as proofreader
starting with our first issue in July 2005 and later becoming associate
editor, with responsibility for coordinating the work of volunteer
staff writers.
Always, she was our expert on English usage;
she did
the copy editing and proofreading, helping make our newsletter as
professional and perfect as it could possibly
be.
All of us at OLLI
E-News thank Karen for her contributions and wish her the best.

SILENT
AUCTION GETTING CLOSER
An update on the May 8 event
DON'T DELAY! The Silent
Auction donations are starting to really come in, and we have some
wonderful things in the catalog. To name just a few, how about these
examples?
- A Belgian
wall hanging,
- Your very own
personalized group tour of the National Portrait Gallery,
- A hanging
basket from Cox Farms,
- Getting your
old VHS movies converted to DVD,
- A wine and
cheese party,
- A French
dinner, and
- Your very own
vocal concert with our very own Linda George.
To see more, check out the Official Catalog.
Just go to the OLLI
Home Page and click on Silent Auction (at
bottom of Quick Links, in the left border).
The Silent Auction Solicitation Letter is
being put to good use. In addition to the hanging basket there is a
gift certificate to The Blue Iguana
restaurant and another to The
Finishing Touch salon (Thanks, C.C.R!). We know lots of folks
are planning to contribute things, because you've told us, but you've
not handed in your forms yet. Alas, some categories remain forlornly
empty, but there is still time to fill them up. There is no need to
wait. Avoid the last minute rush! The catalog man (not me but J.W.)
likes to keep busy! Thanks.

CHANGES COMING FOR
E-NEWS DISTRIBUTION
|
|
Member Portal database to be used
BEGINNING
WITH THE APR
17 EDITION OF OLLI E-NEWS, we
will be using a different distribution process. If you are a current
OLLI member, you will probably not notice any difference at all. As
usual, you will receive an email message with the subject line: "OLLI
E-News for Friday, April 17, 2009."
What's different is that we will be using our
Member Portal database to automatically broadcast an email that
contains the entire newsletter. For the last several years, we have
distributed the newsletter and other "email blasts" using several email
distribution lists that were housed on our computer in the OLLI office.
This process was very labor-intensive and required constant updating of
the inevitable "bounce-backs" of messages going to outdated or
inaccurate email addresses. It also required us to send the message
multiple times because we had to subdivide the list of almost 1,000
names into smaller distribution lists that would be not be blocked as
outgoing spam messages; this won't be required when we use the Portal.
What does this mean for you?
- If you are a current member, you need do
nothing; you will continue to receive OLLI E-News in your inbox each
Friday.
- However, please help us by verifying your
personal information (name, postal
address, phone number and email address) in our master
database. To check and update your personal information as necessary,
simple go to the Member Portal, click
"Login," move your cursor to "Membership," and click "Edit Personal
Info."
If
you've never used the Portal to register for classes, please get a
user account.
- If
you have NOT used the online registration system to register for
classes, you probably do not have a user account
– which you need before you can log in and edit your personal data.
Please go to the Portal,
click "Get a User Account" (see above image), and follow the
instructions. For detailed guidance, refer to page 40 of the spring
catalog (click here
and move to page seven). If you need help, call the office.
- Note: If you are a member
with email but you are NOT receiving the newsletter, call or email the office and provide your email address.
- If you are NOT a current member, starting
next week you will no longer receive OLLI E-News
UNLESS you call or email the office
and ask to be added to the courtesy-copy distribution list (you can opt
out at any time in the future; instructions are at the bottom of every
issue).
Of course, OLLI
E-News will continue to be available for everyone via our OLLI
Web site at www.olli.gmu.edu.
Editor's
note. This notice was submitted by Executive Director Thom Clement. Kudos go to Tallwood Site Administrator
Maria Buscek for persevering in satisfactorily working out these
procedures with software developer Ken McLean despite the reluctance
and questions of the perfectionist editor, who is now satisfied that it
will work. Considerable time and effort will be saved.
