"FRIENDS OF OLLI" HONOR ROLL
Now appearing in the Tallwood Social Room

THE NEXT TIME THAT YOU ARE IN THE SOCIAL ROOM, take a look at the magnificent poster designed by OLLI member Tom Suzuki to honor the 2005 contributors to "Friends of OLLI." The names of all the OLLI members and friends who made donations during the calendar year are listed (unless they wished to remain anonymous) along with a collage of Tallwood and Reston scenes.
We are grateful to Tom for his artistry, and we thank all of our 2005 contributors for their generosity and support.

OSHER PROGRAMS MEET IN SAN JOSE
A report to the membership
By Dick Chobot, Executive Director
FROM APR 19-21, CHARLES DUGGAN AND I REPRESENTED YOU at the annual Osher conference in San Jose, California. Representatives of most Osher Foundation-funded programs were present along with members of the OLLI National Resource Center at the University of Southern Maine. Osher paid our travel expenses so there was no cost to OLLI-GMU.
BARBRO AND BERNARD OSHER

At the kickoff session on Friday night, we were WOW’ed by a PowerPoint presentation focusing on the work of each OLLI. Kali Lightfoot of the National Resource Center and Mary Bitterman, President of the The Bernard Osher Foundation, teamed up to provide the commentary.
A second highlight of the evening was an opportunity to hear Barbro Osher, Chairman of the Board of the Bernard Osher Foundation, discuss the work and future plans of the Osher Foundation.
The final high note was struck when our endowment was announced during the session. Needless to say, this turned us into "instant celebrities" – a shameless overstatement – for both the endowment and the exemplary impression made by the George Mason basketball team during the NCAA tournament.
Lest anyone think that Charles and I just coasted ... au contraire, we worked both the receptions and the sessions. Prior to the conference, I was one of seven representatives involved in the conference planning. On the first full day of the conference, Charles and I presented a session on "Scenario Planning" as part of the Building the Board of Directors track. Later in the morning, I gave a second session titled "The Classroom in the Technology" (about distance learning) in the Teaching/Learning track. We also distributed copious amounts of OLLI-GMU materials during the conference.
Charles and I came away from the conference with a better idea of the nature of other programs operating under the Osher banner…and we reaffirmed – and had reaffirmed for us – that OLLI at George Mason continues to be regarded as one of the first-rank programs.

HELP WANTED
Two areas where OLLI members can help
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee chair
WOMEN WHO'VE LED SHARING YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCES
THE HISTORY RESOURCE GROUP is developing a course for the fall term about significant women leaders on the world scene.
We are looking for member/instructors who would be willing to work up a 90-minute presentation about one of the following: Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Angela Merkel, Eva Peron or any other prominant figure that interests you and who you think would fit into the world leader category.
Please contact me by email or phone.
EACH OF US HAS HAD EXPERIENCES that have in one way or another influenced our life path or have been a significant part of that path.
You might have been born in a log cabin in Montana or emigrated from Germany at a young age. You might have been a CIA operative or performed on Broadway. Perhaps you knew someone who changed your life.
Please consider sharing that life experience in a series of fall classes where each participant can tell his or her story for about 45 minutes. Call me and we’ll talk.

OLLI ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
A report on the May 3 annual meeting
By Carol Henderson, OLLI Secretary
THE FOURTEENTH ANNUAL MEETING of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University was held from 1:30-3:15 at Tallwood on Wed, May 3, 2006, and was attended by more than 70 members.
President Charles Duggan welcomed members and called on his predecessor as president, Bob Bohall, to read a verse tribute written by former member Allen Montecino honoring Michael Styles. Michael, recently deceased, was a founding member who had been president and held other offices and committee chairmanships and was a long-time Board member, instructor, history club founder and the member who negotiated the affiliation agreement with Mason.
Charles Duggan provided the highlights of his annual report on the institute. He plans to distribute a written annual report to the entire membership as a presidential message.
Florence Adler, chair of the Nominating Committee, called on candidates for election to the OLLI Board of Directors in random order: Gordon Canyock, Joe Torpey, Valerie Braybrooke, Pat Carroll, Rod Zumbro, RoseMary Gustin, Charles Duggan, Phil True and Roberta Wulf. Within a five-minute time limit, each spoke and answered questions from members.
Florence reminded members that voting for Board candidates began May 3 and will continue for two weeks.
Ballots, sent to every member by mail, must be received at Tallwood by Wed, May 17 at 11:30 a.m.

Charles Duggan thanked the Nominating Committee and the candidates, and adjourned the meeting at 3:15 for refreshments arranged by the Hospitality Committee. The next meeting of the Board will be on Fri, Jun 2, at 10:00 at Tallwood for the election of officers. OLLI members are welcome to attend.

Reston Meeting Highlights
OLLI Board candidates also spoke at a Reston Support Committee meeting on May 5 at the Lake Anne Church. President Charles Duggan gave brief highlights of his annual report, and executive director Richard Chobot spoke about the Reston program. Approximately 35 members attended the meeting chaired by Reston Support Committee chair Abbie Edwards.

BE PART OF THE "L" CLUB
Help by being a class liaison
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee chair

NOW THAT THE SUMMER CATALOG IS ON OUR WEBSITE, you will once again by delighted by the choice of classes you can enjoy in coming months. As you fill in the form, take note of the "L" column between the column for course number and the one for course description.

It's there for you to offer your help
as a liaison for that class.

By showing your willingness to be in this exclusive "L" club,

you are shouldering some of the volunteer responsibility for the smooth running of the OLLI program.

Anyone who has been in an OLLI class knows what a liaison does. Basically the liaison is the host or hostess of the class, providing important information in the first class and then, in later classes, reminders about housekeeping chores and the like. Your fellow members will appreciate what you do because having someone there to connect you with the speaker, or having someone through whom the office can communicate matters that affect them, will make them feel more comfortable.
By noting on the form your willingness to help, you will be making the job of liaison assignment so much easier for those who do the assigning. However, should you forget to mark the form and you later get a call, do be prepared to make the caller’s day by accepting the opportunity.

A BEVERLY OF ALL TRADES
Profile of a longstanding OLLI member volunteer
By Elizabeth Crawford, OLLI E-News staff writer
IF, AS IN BASEBALL, OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AT OLLI could be measured in numbers, then for her years of membership, positions held, classes attended, and general contributions, Beverly George (photo at right, by Gordon Canyock) would certainly be invited into the OLLI Hall of Fame.
Michael Styles recruited Beverly in the early days of LRI, and she tells a fascinating story of classes in the Fairfax City Hall on Armstrong and in Gold's Gym on Main St. Once at Tallwood, she remembers just two classrooms (TA-1 and the Social Room), one bathroom, no air conditioning, potluck holiday lunches, and communication among members before email. She was instrumental in hiring a coffee service and setting up the Book Exchange.
Over the years Beverly has volunteered at the desk, served as class liaison and substitute instructor, participated in the Book Club, spoken to groups about LRI, coordinated courses, suggested ideas for Special Events, even served on the Board for a few months as a substitute for the ill Kathryn Brooks (founder of LRI). She has been chair of the Membership, Hospitality, Liaison, and Nominating committees over a period of many years. Currently she participates in the Dirty Knee Club and the Facilities Committee.

A graduate of the State Teachers College in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Beverly taught in elementary schools in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Virginia for 33 years. In addition to time spent at OLLI, Beverly is co-treasurer of a portfolio investment club, a longtime volunteer recently honored in the Golden Gazette, and an active member of the American Association of University Women. In her spare time, she travels, bowls and exercises. Somewhere there must be a rocking chair that has never been used.
Beverly describes herself as a "Jill of all trades," but I must correct the rest of her quote to read "and master of many."

About OLLI E-News. OLLI E-News is OLLI's weekly newsletter; it is emailed to OLLI members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI members and staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to the editor is 7:00 PM Wed for that week's issue. Comments, suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI E-News editor or the Publications Committee chair, Gordon Canyock.

Or you could change your email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages like this newsletter in three popular email systems:
  • Outlook Express. Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all messages in plain text."

GMU Webmail. If OLLI E-News is being sent to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against using GMU Webmail (i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read the newsletter because it is not easy to view our newsletter as a single integrated document, with text and accompanying images. As you may know, you can easily use other email systems, such as Outlook Express or Yahoo Mail, to retrieve mail sent to external addresses such as your gmu.edu address. An alternative is to read your newsletter online at the OLLI Website after it is posted each Friday.
