A REPORT TO BE
PROUD OF, PART 1
From the executive
director
THIS
WEEK I SUBMITTED OUR 2008 ANNUAL ENDOWMENT REPORT to the Bernard Osher Foundation.
One of the benefits of producing reports is that the process forces you
to pause, reflect, and appreciate what has been accomplished. Beginning
this week, I will provide segments of the report so that you can share
in my pride of our accomplishments. Following is the first installment.
2008
COURSES, LECTURES AND OTHER PROGRAM OFFERINGS
OLLI-Mason annually offers 26 weeks of courses
spread over four terms: winter (four weeks); spring (eight weeks),
summer (six weeks), and fall (eight weeks). Courses are offered in
three permanent locations in Northern Virginia: Fairfax (the Tallwood
campus proximate to George Mason University's main campus), Reston
(Lake Anne Plaza); and the Mason campus in Loudoun County.
Additionally, large enrollment classes are held at two off-site local
church facilities on a rental basis. During 2008, we entered into a
partnership with a local retirement community to utilize their
facilities for two classes.
The enclosed catalogs contain a complete
listing of 228 course offerings, 93 special events, 12
continuously-active clubs and other activities for the 2008 terms.
Fifty-seven George Mason University faculty,
including the University Provost, served as instructors or speakers at
one or more of our courses during 2008. A complete listing is below. No
honoraria are paid for these services. In fact, once faculty has served
as instructors/speakers, they are eager to return, given the quality of
the OLLI-Mason student.

2009 BOARD OF
DIRECTORS ELECTION
Seeking nominations
By Bob Lawshe, Nominating Committee Chair
I AM PLEASED
TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS have
volunteered to join me on the 2009 OLLI Nominating Committee –
Susanne Zumbro, John West, Ted Parker, Rosemary McDonald, and Gordon
Canyock. The committee is tasked to develop a slate of 9–12
candidates to fill six vacancies on the OLLI Board of Directors and to
manage the 2009 election of candidates to the Board. These vacancies
are caused by the expiration of the terms of the following Board
members – Valerie Braybrooke, Gordon Canyock, Pat Carroll, RoseMary
Gustin, David Mason, and Rod Zumbro.

We invite
each of you to
submit to the
committee the name(s) of any OLLI
member(s) who you believe would be an outstanding candidate to serve on
the OLLI Board of Directors. Any member can be recommended as a
potential candidate. The main criterion is that persons recommended
should have demonstrated an active commitment to OLLI. It is not, of
course, impolite to recommend yourself.
The Nominating Committee will review all
recommendations and attempt to
develop the best possible slate of candidates. Therefore, you are
encouraged to submit more, rather than fewer, names for consideration.
As you know, Board members can make a positive
and lasting impact on the
operation and future direction of the Institute. We urge you to give
this important task serious consideration, and we look forward to
receiving your recommendations for candidates for the 2009 OLLI
Elections.
You can submit your recommendation to any
member of the committee. Email is
preferred. Please try to submit them by Fri, Jan 30.
Thank you for your cooperation.
BOARD
QUALIFICATIONS/STANDARDS
|
When
considering possible candidates please keep in mind that candidates
should have demonstrated or expressed the following qualifications and
standards:
1. An active interest in the Institute in one or more of
the following areas: (a) Teacher, moderator or coordinator of a course
or event; (b) Committee member; or (c) Other volunteer work;
2. The ability to communicate and express ideas verbally
and in writing, and the ability to access and use email, email
attachments and Web sites on a regular basis;
3. Willingness to contribute energy, ideas and time in
support of the Institute;
4. Willingness to assume an active role in the governance
of the Institute, over and above policy making on the Board, in areas
such as Institute officer or committee chair or active committee
member; and
5. Willingness to assume the responsibilities expected of
any nonprofit board: (a) Determine mission and purposes; (b) Select,
support and evaluate performance of executive director; (c) Ensure
effective organizational planning; (d) Ensure adequate resources and
financial responsibility; (e) Determine, monitor and strengthen
programs; (f) Enhance organization’s public standing; (g) Ensure legal
and ethical integrity and maintain accountability; and (h) Recruit and
orient new board members and assess board performance.

Editor's Note.
Here's a

OLLI members with too much time on their hands: the Board's Procedures
and Guidelines for the Nominating Committee, a modest 15-page pdf document.
OH,
COME ON! LET ME CALL YOU SWEETHEART!
OLLI Valentine's Day Party
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee Chair
YOU WON'T WANT
TO MISS THIS ONE! We’re celebrating a day
when folks remember those we love and care
about, and that certainly includes our OLLI friends.
On Fri, Feb 13, at 1:00 you are welcome to a
Valentine’s Day party at Tallwood. There you will be creating your own
ice cream sundaes with three kinds of ice cream and all sorts of
toppings. The entertainment will come from your own member OLLI-ites
who will perform for you.
Now I can’t guarantee the quality of those
performances because we are opening up the program for all sorts of
skills: maybe we’ll have some jugglers, or puppet handlers; maybe
someone will do a stand-up comedy act or a yo-yo act (yo-yo "walk the
dog" is the only animal act allowed). Of course, we expect to have
warblers and instrumentalists and short drama skits, and I’m counting
on our recorder people to offer an act. A poetic recitation would be
nice and even an easy soft shoe. We don’t call it a talent show because
talent is in the eye and ear of the beholder, and we promise not to
pull off any acts with the hook or sound of a gong. This Variety Show
is going to be great!
You will need to respond to this invitation
very soon, especially the invitation to perform. We ask that the
presentation, whatever it is, be kept to no longer than five minutes
(it can be shorter), and we will want to know by Fri, Jan 30. Contact
either me or Kathie West.
If you plan to attend, please don’t leave your
RSVP to the last minute. Contact the office now or no later than Fri,
Feb 6, so we can be prepared with the right amount of ice cream and
beverages.
Doesn’t matter how cold it gets outside; we’ll
warm it up with fun and friendship. Hugs all around!
