TIME TO SPREAD THE WORD!
From the executive director
 By Thom Clement, Executive Director

Front and back of new OLLI business card
WE HAVE SOMETHING GREAT HERE AT OLLI, and we don’t want to keep it a secret. There are thousands of retirees in Northern Virginia who would be very interested in what our OLLI has to offer. Word of mouth will always be the most effective tool for sharing so I encourage each current OLLI member to engage friends and neighbors in discussions about the benefits and joys of learning through OLLI at Mason. If you haven’t picked up any of our new wallet-sized OLLI business cards (images shown above), please stop by the Tallwood office, and we’ll give you some to use.
We are making plans for direct mailings to coordinate with our fall 2008 registration time in August. We are also interested in running small ads or announcements in local newsletters and papers. If you are a member of a homeowners' association that produces a regular newsletter that includes such announcements, please send contact information to me via email, and I’ll get the information to them at the appropriate time.
Several OLLI members will be representing us at the Viva Vienna fair over Memorial Day weekend – Sun and Mon, May 25 and 26. Stop by if you get a chance! Details are on the Viva Vienna Web site.
Remember – IT’S TIME TO SPREAD THE WORD!

MASON ANNOUNCES A FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS
Inauguration of an annual event
By Eileen and Charles Duggan, OLLI members
ON JUNE 12, 2008, SOMETHING EXCITING WILL HAPPEN for the first time on the George Mason campusthe inauguration of the "Mason Festival of the Arts," an annual summer performing arts event right here on Mason's Fairfax campus.
The festival will have something to offer everyone. There will be two dramatic plays, performances by the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, Fairfax Choral Society, and World Children's Choir, the world premier of an opera, and a film festival.
The Mason Festival of the Arts lasts for three weekends; each Saturday and Sunday will be filled with both ticketed and free events. A community arts weekend is planned with exhibitors' booths, fine art for sale, and food vendors; a Festival Café will operate every weekend 4:00-7:00 in the lobby of the Center for the Arts. The annual First Light Festival has been incorporated in the program, and OLLI’s Drama Club will once again be participating. More on that in the coming weeks.
So, mark the Festival on your calendar for the last three weekends in June. OLLI E-News will give you more specific details about the various events and OLLI’s involvement over the next few weeks.

ON YOUR MARK, GET READY...
Four months left to train
By Rod Zumbro, OLLI E-News Editor
CALLING ALL OLLI SENIOR OLYMPIANS: The next Northern Virginia Senior Olympics starts four months from now, Sat, Sep 20, and runs through Thu, Oct 2. You have plenty of time to do some practicing and get ready for your events!
OLLI members have regularly had fun and won medals at the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (see links below to OLLI E-News articles with photos). Competition among one's peers is exciting, and there are events at these Olympics for just about everyone -- some are athletic and others are strictly non-athletic. Most athletic events are in five-year or ten-year age groups so you don't have to worry about competing against significantly younger folks.
Here's a sampling of events (not a complete list).

  Track & field
       Dashes (50, 100, 200 meters)
       Runs (400, 800 meters)
       Walks (800 & 1600 meters, 3 miles)
       Discus; shot put
       Long jump (standing and running)
Swimming (50 yards freestyle, breaststroke and back stroke; 1/2 mile)
  Ten-pin bowling
  Basketball (3x3; free throw)
  Tennis (doubles, mixed doubles)
  Pickle-ball
  Backgammon; chess; cribbage; duplicate bridge
Bait casting; golf; miniature golf; frisbee throw; horseshoes; shuffleball
  Eight-ball pool; table tennis

For complete information including rules, schedule, registration and event locations, see the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics Website.

DRAMA CLUB TO PRESENT A MARK TWAIN STORY
"The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg"
THE OLLI DRAMA CLUB WILL PRESENT "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg," a play from the story by Mark Twain. The play will be presented in TA-3 at 10:30 on Fri, May 30, by the OLLI Players.
Come and see a cast of your peers present this moving and interesting story set in 1900 in the small town of Hadleyburg. The play stars the famous OLLI group of actors – including Eileen and Charles Duggan, Carolyn Sanders, Manny Pablo, Karen Hauser, Bob Greenspan, Alan Wenberg, Thelma Weiner, Roxanne Cramer and many others. The director is Kathie West with set design by Carolyn Sanders.
Come and enjoy an hour of a famous Mark Twain short story brought to life.
TWO NOTICES FROM THE OFFICE

TALLWOOD OFFICE HOURS
REGISTRATION PROCESS REMINDER
The OLLI office will be open for business from 9:00 until 12 noon when classes are not in session. When scheduling meetings, please hold them during these morning hours.
Contact the OLLI office at 703-503-3384 if you need to schedule a meeting or activity.
The OLLI Board of Directors approved a "randomized" process for registration that has now been in use for the past four terms. Using this system, all members who list a course as priority "1" have an equal chance of getting into the course if the number of registrants is greater than the space available. You no longer need to worry about standing in line to be among the first ones to register. The registration system will assign a number to each registrant and sort them randomly after the registration period is closed. Normally there are only a few courses in which we must put people on a "wait list" due to lack of seating space. When a course is held at the Church of Good Shepherd, there are no seating space limitations.

DEPARTMENTS
EYE ON RESTON
News for Restonites
By Sharon Gilman, OLLI E-News Staff Writer
THE SPRING TERM OF CLASSES HAS ENDED, BUT we can reflect back on many very good courses. There were 17 courses offered, and many rave reviews were heard. Many of our Reston members registered for multiple courses. In fact there was a total registration of 397 indicating the strong support the courses received.
Registration has begun for the summer program. We hope you are pleased with the course offerings. Reston’s fall schedule is almost complete, and we are excited about the variety of programs that are going to be offered. If you won’t be around for the summer program keep your eyes open for the fall schedule!
Several of our members have asked about the possibility of establishing a "Knitting Club." If you have interest in a Knitting Club, please contact Sheila Gold.
The Reston Bridge Club will not be meeting during the summer but will start up again in the fall.

Read the Latest Issue Before Email Distribution. Eager to read the latest news from OLLI? The new weekly issue of OLLI E-News is usually posted to the OLLI Website some time Thursday evening. So Thursday night or first thing Friday morning, just go to http://www.olli.gmu.edu/pubs.htm#enews, where you will find a list of the last 12 issues, and click the issue with Friday's date.

This does not normally work with Internet Explorer (although you may be able to make it work by clicking Open after clicking the text/html link and then selecting Internet Explorer as the program to use to view the link).
You could forward the newsletter to your alternate Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail or Hotmail and read it there ... or read it online at the OLLI Website each Friday.
Perhaps the easiest solution for those of you with gmu.edu email accounts is to configure your desktop email system such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Windows Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve mail sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these instructions.
