QUESTION
OF THE WEEK
Our Web polls provide member
feedback to OLLI
Background:
Now that the Board elections are over, we want to know what you
think about the voting process. Our objective is to gather information
-- while
things are fresh in everyone's mind -- for possible use by the ad hoc
group that is working to revise the bylaws and may also propose changes
to the voting process.
As you may recall, in 2006 the ballots were
mailed to
members on Apr 4, and candidates gave their speeches a month later at
the May 3 Annual Membership Meeting ("AMM" for short in the question's
choices). Note: If you attended the
May 5
meeting at Lake Anne where candidates spoke again, please consider that
meeting to be the relevant "AMM" in the question's choices.
This week's question has to do
with when you voted (before or after the AMM) and whether or not the
candidates' speeches
influenced your vote.
Question: When did you vote
and did
the candidates' speeches at the Annual Membership Meeting ("AMM")
influence your vote?
Choices:
(1) Voted before the AMM; (2) Voted afterwards but didn't attend the
AMM; (3) Attended the AMM, then voted; AMM had no
influence on my vote; (4) Attended
the AMM, then voted; AMM did
influence my vote; (5)
Couldn't vote: Lost or didn't receive ballot; and
(6)
Didn't bother or chose not to vote. |
Vote
here in this Web poll and
then instantly see the results to date, including your vote. Later,
anytime
during the week, check back to see how the online membership has
voted. Note:
We apologize
if the Question of the Week is not visible, which can sometimes happen
when
this free service we are using exceeds its bandwidth, and we ask you to
re-visit
the site later to see if you can vote.
VIVA VIENNA, VIVA OLLI!
Enthusiastic OLLI volunteers drag the
crowds into our booth
 By Debbie Halverson,
Membership Committee chair
I
KNEW IT WOULD BE A GOOD DAY last Sunday
(Memorial Day weekend) when, facing a brilliant sun in a clear blue sky
at 6:30 am, I headed for the Viva Vienna Fair. Ceda and Palmer McGrew
already had the OLLI canopy up when I arrived and were ready to head
for the beach.
"THANKS
TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL OLLI VOLUNTEERS, IT WAS A GOOD DAY." —
Debbie Halverson

Fair management mandated our early set-up
time, so for the next three hours, I tucked into my book. Cool breezes
wafted around me, carrying sounds of other vendors noisily whacking
together their tents and setting up their wares. At ten, Cloe
Ingram and Doris Weisman arrived to greet a growing crowd. I strolled
about, rejecting impulses to purchase jewelry and spangly purses.
Instead, I bought the biggest, messiest Philly cheese steak ever with
peppers and onions, followed by an orange cream smoothie. Who says fair
food isn't nourishing?
Susan Safran, Beverly George and Bill Ciccolo
came next. They didn't need me, so I tried reading on a nearby bench.
But I couldn't concentrate as they called out and enticed passers-by to
our booth. Enthusiastic conversation resulted in full packages of
promotional materials leaving the booth and a growing mailing list.
Same enthusiasm from Carolyn and Al Sanders.
Carolyn’s pitch: " Learning keeps you
young; would you
believe I’m 85 years old?" Of course she is not and no one took
her seriously because she always clarified within the next few seconds,
but it was a good line. Bob and Joyce Dorosin followed with a less
raucous but equally effective approach.
The crowd was thinning, but we still had two
hours to go when Al and Alice Roe took over. People were so friendly —
even young folks came over to see what this non-basketball aspect of
George Mason was all about.
Eight pm: Take-down time. We were ready
when Bruce Reinhart arrived to pack up his truck and haul away our gear.
I was right. Thanks to all our wonderful OLLI
volunteers, it was a good—and fun—day.
$2,700
DONATED IN MEMORY OF MICHAEL STYLES
A report to the membership
 By Charles
Duggan, former OLLI President (2004-2006 )
WHEN
MICHAEL STYLES PASSED AWAY on April 5, 2006, his family asked
that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to OLLI. I am pleased to
report that OLLI received $2,700 in Michael’s honor. Donations were
received from 41 households, representing both OLLI members and
Michael’s many other friends. Eighteen OLLI members made donations. We
are grateful to all who contributed to honor Michael’s memory.

OLLI HOSTS APPRECIATION LUNCHEON FOR MASON
Mason
employees enjoying
lunch in TA-1.
ON WED, MAY
31, ON BEHALF OF
OLLI MEMBERS, the Board and staff hosted an appreciation lunch
for the George Mason Physical Plant and Housekeeping staffs to say
thanks for all of the services and support they provide to keep OLLI
running. More than 75 George Mason employees, including our
representative from Human Resources, came to Tallwood for sandwiches,
wings, pizza, salads, soft drinks and other goodies, organized by Ann,
Rae and Karen.
It was nice to have an opportunity to say a
personal thank-you to many of the heretofore anonymous individuals who
are an important part of making OLLI what it is. Tom Calhoun, the Vice
President for Facilities, and Larry Spaine, the Director for Physical
Plant, also were able to join us.
When you are next on the Tallwood campus and
you see a member of the Physical Plant or Housekeeping staff, make sure
you thank them for their work.
Finally,
during the lunch we learned from the carpentry shop that they will be
re-siding the restroom facility sometime this summer.

Chobot, OLLI
Executive Director

TRAVEL IN TIME
A great idea for local or visiting
grandchildren!
 By Elizabeth Crawford, OLLI
E-News staff writer
OF COURSE, ALL GRANDCHILDREN ARE
SUPERIOR. That's a given. But if, by
chance, there is any room in those young heads for more intellectual
growth, you might consider accompanying them on a summer journey to
become Virginia Time Travelers.
If you go to www.timetravelers.org/, you
will
find information on this exciting program. You may download a passport,
which the child may have stamped at any of 300 locations throughout
Virginia. Participating historic sites are listed by area, with 75 in
Northern Virginia. Information on these sites includes free or
discounted admission and a phone number to call for more details.

A child who visits six sites before Nov 1, 2006, may send in the
stamped passport and receive a Time Traveler certificate signed by the
governor. For $7.00, he or she may also receive a Time Traveler
T-shirt.
A free patch, "Colonists to Countrymen
1607-1799," is
available to children who visit at least two of our oldest historic
sites. In a separate listing, you will find information on 2006 special
events at these sites throughout the summer and fall.
For grandparents, the term Time Traveler has
an additional meaning. While traveling back in historic time, we may
also return briefly to our own youth as we catch a glimpse of the world
through the eyes of a child.

About OLLI
E-News. OLLI
E-News is
OLLI's weekly newsletter; it is emailed to OLLI
members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in
session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in
classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI
members and
staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to
the editor is 7:00 PM Wed for that week's issue. Comments,
suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI
E-News editor or the
Publications Committee chair, Gordon
Canyock.
Note
about HTML graphics. If
you do NOT see

clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged
grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things
for you. Or you could change your
email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages
like this newsletter in
three popular email systems:
- Outlook
Express.
Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all
messages in plain text."
- Yahoo

Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block
HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
- AOL.

GMU Webmail.
If OLLI E-News is being sent
to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against using GMU Webmail
(i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read the newsletter because it
is not easy to view our newsletter as a single
integrated
document, with text and accompanying images. As you may know, you can
easily use other email systems, such
as Outlook Express or Yahoo Mail, to retrieve mail sent to external
addresses such as your gmu.edu address. An alternative is to read your
newsletter online at the OLLI Website after it is posted
each Friday.
