WHAT’S A TUTORIAL?
From the executive director
 By Thom Clement,
Executive Director

At the Portal, put your mouse cursor on Tutorial and click to view the
Tutorial.
THE
THOUGHT CAME TO ME RECENTLY that many of
our OLLI members may not have used the Tutorial that is available on
our Registration Portal. A tutorial is simply a set of step-by-step
instructions for using the various features of a computer program. Even
if you haven’t yet obtained a "user ID" for the registration system,
you can go the Registration Portal ( www.olliatgmu.org) and click on
"Tutorial" at the top of the screen to start. The Tutorial is 33 pages
of instructions with pictures of the screen.
You can click on "My Account" to see the "Get
User Account" option if you have not already obtained your user ID.
Approximately 42 percent of OLLI members used
the online registration system successfully for the spring term and 44
percent used it for the summer term registration. I hope we’ll see an
increase as more of you take the time to learn the system.
There’s
another reason to use the Registration
Portal: the OLLI Membership Directory is now available there.

Display of the online Membership Directory after you log onto the
Portal.
Note: The
"Find" field
(rectangle above) appears only in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
You can
click on "Members" and then "Membership Directory" and see an
alphabetical listing of all OLLI members. The directory also gives home
address, phone number, and email address. If you want to print out your
own copy of the directory, you can do so using either an Excel
spreadsheet format or the
Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF).
The Tutorial includes information about using
the Membership Directory on pages 26-31.
Now that you know what a tutorial is, you can
have fun using the OLLI Registration Portal for registering and for the
online Membership Directory!

RECEPTION FOR RAE SCHAFER
Say goodbye to Rae Friday morning, Jun 13
Rae Schafer; photo by Gordon Canyock.
RAE
SCHAFER, OLLI PROGRAM ASSOCIATE since Jan 2006, will be leaving
OLLI on Fri, Jun 13. Rae and her family will be moving to Germany due
to the military reassignment of her husband.
Rae has done an outstanding job of
coordinating the development of our schedule of courses and activities
and putting together the catalogs for each term. All OLLI members are
invited to a reception at Tallwood in Rae’s honor on Fri, Jun 13,
immediately following the 10:00 meeting of the Board of
Directors--which is expected to be relatively short.

OLLI BOOK CLUB
Meets Wed to discuss The Namesake
THE OLLI
BOOK CLUB will be meeting at
10:00 on Wed, Jun 11, in TA-2. The book for discussion is The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri.
It is the fictional account of the experience of an Indian immigrant
couple and their American-born children living in Cambridge ,
Massachusetts.
All OLLI members are welcome.
HELP TROOPS AT WALTER REED
Donations of colored shorts and T-shirts
needed
THERE
IS A NEED AT WALTER REED FOR "ADAPTIVE" CLOTHING
for our injured servicemen/women. Most especially needed are either
boxer shorts or gym shorts and T-shirts that can be modified with
Velcro (instead of a seam) sewed along the outside. The soldiers who
have had severe injuries to their limbs find that this clothing is much
more
comfortable with the adaptive sides.
Only colored shorts or T-shirts are wanted,
with sizes large,
extra large and XX large mostly needed. Please leave any donations by
the white plastic container that is used for Mason Military Outreach in
the Tallwood social room,
and OLLI will transport them to the Veteran's Office on campus, where
the clothing will be modified with Velcro.
SINGLES GROUP EVENT
|
SINGLES
GROUP MEMBERS AND
FRIENDS ARE
INVITED to join in a theater happening at Mason on Sun, Jun 15,
at 5:00. As part of the Mason Festival of the Arts,
Mason's Theater of
the First Amendment is sponsoring The
Generations Playwriting Project in which a group of OLLI
thespians and playwrights are teaming with a group of young people to
present ten-minute plays about each others' generation. This will take
place in TheaterSpace on campus and is free.
In addition, there is a professional play at
2:00 that day by the Theater of the First Amendment in the Harris
Theater. Mariela in the Desert
is a mystery about an artistic family with problems that is set in the
Northern Mexico desert. The cost is $25.
Please contact Harriet Kaplan if you are interested
in attending one or both performances as a group
or in dinner after the performances.

HOW TO EXPRESS YOUR VIEWS ABOUT OLLI
|
PUBLICLY:
Email
your "Letter
to the Editor" (see recent sample)
or "Letter to
Ms. Ollie Ettakit" (see recent sample)
to the editor. Anonymous
submissions are
acceptable if you provide contact information so we can verify that you
are an OLLI member. Whenever an official response to a letter to
the editor is
clearly appropriate, the editor will obtain and publish the OLLI
response in the same issue so members will have more complete
information and a balanced picture of the matter. |
PRIVATELY:
• Contact any Board member,
committee or
resource group chair, or the executive
director;
• Send an email
to the entire
Board
(email the editor or the office to have your
message forwarded to all members of the Board);
• Submit a
suggestion online
or in the box in the Tallwood social room; or
• Contact the
office by email
or phone (703-503-3384). |

EYE ON RESTON
News for Restonites
 By Sharon Gilman, OLLI
E-News Staff Writer
WE ARE VERY PLEASED
that so many of our members have been helping to enhance OLLI in
Reston. As mentioned in an earlier article, our goal is to recruit 60
new members by the end of the winter term 2009. Sheila Gold will
continue to coordinate our efforts in that regard, with assistance from
Debbie Halverson.
By far the most effective tool we have is word
of mouth. We all have new and old friends who are not OLLI members, and
every one of them is a potential new member. The Reston summer program
has a wide range of interesting courses; why not invite a friend to
join you in attending a class?
Last week Executive Director Thom Clement and
Board member Al Roe from Reston met with OLLI-Loudoun Program
Coordinator Ray Beery to discuss ways in which Loudoun and Reston can
complement one another as we move forward with our programs, social
activities, and special events. After all, we are one organization with
a common goal of enriching the OLLI experience.
Several people have expressed an interest in
joining the knitting club that Sheila Gold is organizing, but more
members are desired. If you are thinking about joining, please contact
Sheila.

About OLLI
E-News. OLLI
E-News, OLLI's weekly newsletter, is emailed to OLLI
members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in
session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in
classrooms, primarily for members without email. Comments,
suggestions or complaints? Please contact Editor Rod
Zumbro or Communications Committee Chair Gordon
Canyock.
| Submissions. We encourage members
to submit news items, articles and photos for this newsletter; deadline
to
the editor is 7:00 PM Wed (Mon for letters to the editor for which an
OLLI response is appropriate) for that
week's issue. Please limit
articles to about 250 words. Submit material to Editor Rod Zumbro
(email rzumbro@gmu.edu, phone
703-569-2750); email strongly preferred. |
Note
about HTML graphics. If
you do NOT see
photos and
clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged
grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things
for you. Or you could change your
email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages
like this newsletter in five popular email systems:
•
Microsoft Outlook
Express and Windows Mail.
Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all
messages in plain text."
• Mozilla Thunderbird.
Click Tools; select Options and click the Privacy icon; click the
General tab. Uncheck "Block loading of remote images" and uncheck
"Block Javascript." Click OK. Now click View; select "Message Body As
... Original HTML" (not Plain Text). Also in View, select "Display
Attachments Inline" so that selection is checked.
• Yahoo Mail.
Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block
HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
•
AOL. Upgrade,
if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.
| Read the Latest
Issue Before Email Distribution. Eager to read the latest news
from
OLLI? The
new weekly issue of OLLI E-News
is
usually posted to the OLLI Website some time Thursday evening. So
Thursday night or first
thing Friday morning, just go to http://www.olli.gmu.edu/pubs.htm#enews,
where you will find a list of the last 12
issues, and click the issue with Friday's date. |
GMU Webmail.
If OLLI E-News is being sent
to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against
using GMU Webmail
(i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read this newsletter unless
you are using Firefox as your browser; in Firefox, just click
the text/html
link to view the newsletter. This does not normally work with Internet
Explorer (although you may be able to make it work by clicking Open
after clicking the text/html link and then selecting Internet Explorer
as the program to use to view the link).
• You
could forward the
newsletter to your alternate Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail
or
Hotmail and read it there ... or read it online at
the OLLI
Website each Friday.
• Perhaps
the easiest solution for those of you with gmu.edu email accounts
is to configure your desktop email system such
as Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Windows Mail or Mozilla
Thunderbird to retrieve mail
sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these
instructions.
