EVERYONE LOVES A STORY
From the president
 By Debbie Halverson, President
FOR THE LAST SPRING TERM, Bob
Bohall and I tried out an idea: because many of our OLLI colleagues
have interesting events or experiences in their pasts, we figured
they might be willing to share. We scheduled a class we titled "Slices
and Snippets" and asked for volunteers to tell their stories. We filled
four class sessions with interesting revelations from the past about
eight of our members.
As a memoir-writing teacher at OLLI, I am always fascinated by
what those in my classes write about. Here we are at OLLI, arriving on
the scene with no one here knowing where we've been or who we were in
lives past. But then, when we've become better acquainted, we learn how
each of us is unique, how each of us has come to this point in life
with unusual, sometimes fascinating, experiences under our belts.
The "Slices and Snippets" class is a case in
point: topics
included growing up in the Philippines or on a maple-syrup farm in
upstate New York; dealing with alcoholism; witnessing the desegregation
of the Little Rock schools on a famous day in Arkansas; the trials of
trying to make an acting career in New York City; winning a Lexus;
relocating 11,000 persons in 100 days. We were moved by what we heard;
we laughed a lot and we drew closer.
Many class members asked if we could do it
again. Certainly. Not
only that, I feel we should offer this course … if it be considered a
course … in Reston as well. |
So here's what you do: sit in a big easy
chair, close your eyes
and take yourself back to a meaningful time in your life that you think
others would enjoy hearing about. Then email Ben Gold for Reston and me for
Tallwood and we’ll talk. And then we'll arrange for you to talk again …
to your OLLI fellow members. Don't be shy or modest. As I said,
everyone loves a story.

Standard Operating Procedures for AEDs
 By Dick Chobot,
Executive Director
TWO
WEEKS AGO OLLI E-NEWS REPORTED
that eight staff and volunteers from Tallwood and Reston were certified
in CPR and the use of the new automatic external defibrillators (AEDs)
-- Ann Hartmann, Pat Cosslett, Ben Gold, Sheila Gold, Diana Richards,
Rae Schafer, Ann Youngren and myself.
As a tenant
of George Mason, OLLI is required to follow Mason’s procedures as they
relate to medical emergencies on our Tallwood campus and the Reston and
Loudoun sites. These procedures are reproduced verbatim in the
following table.
GMU MEDICAL EMERGENCY PROCEDURE
|
>
Protect
victim from further injury by removing any persistent
threat to the victim. Do not move the victim unnecessarily. Do not
delay in obtaining trained medical assistance.
> Call 911.
Always call from a safe location.
> Call University Police (Tallwood) [703-993-2810]
> Provide first aid until help arrives if you have
appropriate training and equipment, and it is safe to do so.
> Send someone to escort emergency responders to the
appropriate location if possible.
|
Using these procedures as a guideline, here
are the specific procedures that will govern the use of the OLLI AEDs
at Tallwood and Reston. There is no OLLI AED currently in place in
Loudoun. These OLLI standard operating procedures are divided into two
parts: (1) general medical incidents at an OLLI facility; and (2)
medical incidents necessitating the administration of CPR and the use
of an AED.
OLLI STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
| GENERAL MEDICAL INCIDENTS |
SUSPECTED CARDIAC INCIDENTS |
Staff
should be advised immediately of any accident befalling a member
or visitor while on an OLLI campus (Tallwood, Reston and Loudoun). It
will be the judgment of staff as to whether campus, City and/or County
emergency medical services should be called.
For falls, fainting
spells, etc., especially where head injury is involved or loss of
consciousness occurs, a call to 911 will be automatic; likewise, any
fall or injury that suggests a broken bone.
A member refusing medical
services will be asked to sign a release before leaving campus. |
If
a visitor or member becomes unconscious
and unresponsive while at Tallwood or Reston, staff should be contacted
immediately. The following will occur:
>
A call
will be made immediately to 911 and to Campus Police. A
volunteer will be asked to meet the emergency responders and direct
them to the site where aid is being rendered.
> The AED
will be immediately brought to the site from the office
(Tallwood) or the location where it has been placed during class
(Reston).
> The
area will immediately be cleared and the victim made comfortable.
> If the
incident occurs outside and the surface is not relatively flat
(to allow for possible CPR) and/or it is raining or there is snow on
the
ground, the individual will be quickly moved inside. Staff will
determine if it is safe to move the individual and will attempt to
revive them and establish if they are breathing and have a clear
airway. If the individual is breathing, staff will render basic first
aid, if appropriate, and wait until the Emergency
Medical Technicians (EMTs) arrive.
> If the
individual is not breathing or
ceases to breathe, CPR will
be begun immediately by a trained staff member or volunteer.
> If the
individual remains non-responsive, the AED will be attached
to the victim’s torso using two adhesive pads. The AED automatically
checks the heart function and determines whether a shock must be
administered. If a shock is required, it will be automatically
administered, after which CPR is continued for two minutes.
> The AED
then takes a second reading and, if the EMTs have not
arrived, a second shock may be administered and CPR resumed. This
procedure – AED/CPR – or CPR alone will continue until the EMTs arrive.
|
Additional information relating to the SOP is
provided here.
>
The AED is
fully automatic. It also prompts the user through placing the pads and
administering CPR.
>
The AED will
not fire unless it detects an irregular heart rhythm.
>
Under the
Virginia Good Samaritan Law a citizen can refuse to assist a person in
medical distress. However, once assistance is rendered, it must be
continued until competent medical professionals arrive.
>
If you are
asked to assist staff in any way (clear the area, call 911, get the
defibrillator, etc.), please do so with dispatch. And please do not
offer advice. If you are not so involved, please clear the area near
any incident unless you are specifically requested to remain. Time is
of the essence. |
It is my sincere wish that we never have
occasion to use our AEDs. However, members should take some comfort in
the fact that the devices are available if they are ever needed. Our
sincere gratitude is extended to the Friends of OLLI for supporting the
purchase and staff/volunteer training on the AEDs.
BOOK CLUB AT TALLWOOD
|
THE BOOK
CLUB
AT TALLWOOD will meet on Wed, Jun 13, at 10:00 at Tallwood. This
month’s selection is Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography, Team of Rivals, the saga of
Abraham Lincoln’s political life and presidency.
Everyone is welcome to join the
discussion—whether you've finished reading the book or are just
thinking about reading this fascinating story of one of America’s most
famous leaders.

About OLLI
E-News. OLLI
E-News, OLLI's weekly newsletter, is emailed to OLLI
members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in
session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in
classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI
members and
staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to
the editor is 7:00 PM Wed (Mon for letters to the editor) for that
week's issue. Comments,
suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI
E-News editor or the
Publications Committee chair, Gordon
Canyock.
Note
about HTML graphics. If
you do NOT see
photos and
clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged
grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things
for you. Or you could change your
email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages
like this newsletter in
three popular email systems:
>
Microsoft Outlook
Express.
Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all
messages in plain text."
> Mozilla Thunderbird.
Click Tools; select Options and click the Privacy icon; click the
General tab. Uncheck "Block loading of remote images" and uncheck
"Block Javascript." Click OK. Now click View; select "Message Body As
... Original HTML" (not Plain Text). Also in View, select "Display
Attachments Inline" so that selection is checked.
> Yahoo Mail.
Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block
HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
> AOL. Upgrade,
if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.
GMU Webmail.
If OLLI E-News is being sent
to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against
using GMU Webmail
(i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read this newsletter
because it
is normally impossible to view the newsletter in GMU
Webmail
as a single
integrated
document, with text and accompanying images. You could forward the
newsletter to your alternate Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail
or
Hotmail and read it there ... or just read it online at
the OLLI
Website after it is posted
each week.
Perhaps the easiest solution for those of you with GMU email accounts
is to configure your desktop email system such
as Microsoft Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve mail
sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these
instructions.
Finding
the Latest
Issue Online. The
new weekly issue of OLLI E-News
is
usually posted Thursday evening. Here's how to read the online version
right after
it is posted:
> It is identified by
the next number in
sequence for that year -- e.g., if last week's issue number were
enews1-07, the next issue number would be enews2-07 and could be found
at www.olli.gmu.edu/enews2-07.htm.
> Thus, go to the list of the last 12
issues, click the most recent issue (probably last week's), change
(in the address field of your browser) the enews number to the next
number, and then press Enter.
