WELCOME
From the president
By Emmett Fenlon, President
WELCOME TO THE OLLI SUMMER TERM. This is a new beginning. Especially it is a new beginning for me as I start my term serving as your president.
We have an academic program that provides thought-provoking lectures at all three OLLI locations -- Fairfax, Reston and Loudoun. Summer courses are offered in such diverse areas as photography, climate change, poetry, air traffic control, Iraq, and how a battle changed the history of Scotland and England. The summer term provides opportunities to again greet old friends and to meet new ones. In this outdoor season, be sure to take time to enjoy the landscaping and relax at the various outdoor sitting areas. Soon OLLI members will be sharing their courses, backgrounds and experiences over coffee and cookies.
I look forward to seeing you during the summer term, and may the journey of lifetime learning continue.

Emmett Fenlon, a retired government economist and attorney, joined OLLI in 2005. Since 2007 he has served as co-chair of the History and Current Events Resource Group. Emmett was elected to the Board in May 2007, served as vice president this past Board year (Jun 2008-Jun 2009), and was recently elected president for the current Board year (Jun 2009-Jun 2010). APPRECIATION FOR MASON SUPPORT
From the executive director
By Thom Clement, Executive Director
O N TUESDAY, OLLI HOSTED Mason's facilities support staff at OLLI's annual Appreciation Luncheon. It would not be an exaggeration to describe the event as a "mutual love-fest" between the University and its "favorite" affiliate!
Over 100 workers from the following shops and departments attended: carpentry, grounds, electric, plumbing, housekeeping, printing, paint/signage, keys, and Human Resources. Each of these departments provides unique services to OLLI throughout the year, often at no cost to OLLI. Workers were treated to a tasty buffet luncheon of pulled-chicken and pulled-pork barbecue sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, and chips, with cookies and brownies for dessert.
Mason leadership also attended: Tom Calhoun, Vice President for Facilities; Larry Spaine, Director of Facilities Management; and Ralph Lewis, Associate Manager, Project Management.

Photos taken by Bill Walsh at the Appreciation Luncheon on Tuesday.
OLLI President Emmett Fenlon greeted workers throughout the luncheon with remarks such as "We truly appreciate all that you do for OLLI; this luncheon is our way of showing our gratitude for your support." Board members Paul Howard and Manny Pablo were also present to meet, greet and thank the luncheon participants.

Thom Clement, a retired Fairfax County Public Schools teacher, principal and administrator, became OLLI's full-time executive director in Jan 2008. Thom is responsible for managing the Institute’s operations and supervising its staff of part-time employees.

A TIME FOR LEARNING
Welcoming our new members

By Elizabeth Crawford, OLLI E-News Staff Writer

RECENTLY MY GRANDSON HEARD ME TALKING about the summer classes I would be attending at OLLI. In a classic role reversal, he said, "You know, Grandma, if you had studied harder this spring, you wouldn't have to go to summer school."
How fortunate we are to have passed beyond "have to" into "want to" -- to a time when we long to learn about Early Buddhist Art or the Bloomsbury Group and have the leisure to do so. How fortunate we are to have OLLI to provide the academic and social opportunities that enrich our lives. How fortunate we are, as well, to be able to share this opportunity with others.
Welcome to the following new members...

Jim and Judy Britt, Fairfax
Kathleen Britts, Fairfax Station

OLLI SUMMER COURSE SURVEY
A SURVEY REQUEST WAS SENT VIA EMAIL TO ALL OLLI MEMBERS on Mon, Jun 15. The "Survey Monkey" survey includes three questions related to the OLLI registration system and four questions related to courses that members would like to see offered in the future. As of press time, over 200 OLLI members have completed this online survey.
For those members who were not able to open the link
by clicking their mouse on it, we are including a clickable link here. If you have not already responded to this important survey, please try again by clicking on this link:

TRANSITION TO OLLI.GMU.EDU
A new way to remember OLLI's Web site

YOU CAN DROP THE "WWW" AND STILL REACH OUR WEB SITE! Through some technical magic, it is no longer necessary for you to enter www.olli.gmu.edu to reach our Web site. You can just enter olli.gmu.edu (without the preceding www) for our home page. Addresses with and without the "www" will continue to work indefinitely for any page on our Web site.
Actually, many of you already know that you don't have to type the address at all into the location field of your Web browser. Just enter "olli" without the quotes in your search engine (such as Google), and one of the first hits is likely to be our OLLI at Mason home page, especially if you are searching from this geographic area.
