BOARD HIGHLIGHTS
Last week's Board of Directors meeting
By Carol Henderson, outgoing Secretary
AS YOU HAVE ALREADY HEARD, the Board elected officers at its meeting on Jun 15:

     > Debbie Halverson, president;
     > Ben Gold, vice president;
     > Pat Carroll, treasurer; and
     > Susanne Zumbro, secretary.

     The Board also provided guidance to executive director Dick Chobot on the extension of OLLI’s Affiliation Agreement with George Mason University and on the OLLI contribution to the paving of the parking lot used by OLLI at the Fairfax Swimming Pool.
     The Board received reports from the treasurer and the executive director. As chair of an ad hoc committee, I provided to directors copies of a major revision of the Board Handbook, also available on the OLLI Website.
     The next Board meeting is scheduled for Fri, Jul 20, at 10:00 at Tallwood. OLLI members are welcome to attend.

QUESTION IN COURSE #3: IRA'S
Asked, answered

A QUESTION AROSE this week in course #3, IRA Distributions and Beneficiary Designations. Instructor Mike May researched the question after class and has provided the answer at this Website page (http://www.olligmu.org/~finforum/courseqna.html) for class attendees and any other interested OLLI member.

DON'T MISS OUT
Read OLLI E-News between terms
By Rod Zumbro, OLLI E-News editor
HAVE YOU BEEN READING OLLI E-NEWS in its print edition during class terms because you don't have email or computer access ... but not reading the newsletter between terms? If so, you're missing out on everything that's happening at OLLI during half of the year -- the entire 26 weeks per year that OLLI is not in session. If you don't read OLLI E-News every week, you'll miss important news such as these items that were reported between the spring and summer terms: announcements about the summer catalog; reminders about registration; updates on upcoming summer courses; and operating procedures for the newly installed defibrillators.
     This newsletter is OLLI's primary means of communicating with its members, and it is also a vehicle for members to communicate with OLLI leadership via letters to the editor. The great majority of OLLI members have email so most of your colleagues do read OLLI E-News each week. If you're not one of these members, what should you do?

     > The obvious solution is to get a computer, Internet access and an email account. If that is "too hard" for you, then there are other solutions.
     > Use an Internet computer at the library or a family member's home to read the online version of the newsletter once a week (a new issue is published each Friday). Just open the Web browser, type www.olli.gmu.edu in the address field and press Enter. That takes you to the OLLI Website. Then move the mouse over "News" and select "What's New" or "OLLI E-News" from the drop-down menu.
     > At the library or a family member's computer, establish a free Web-based email account (Yahoo, Hotmail and Google are popular). Send an email to the office (olli@gmu.edu) and soon you'll start receiving OLLI E-News in your inbox. Make sure you check your email regularly as a courtesy to senders and to prevent your account from being canceled due to inactivity.
     > A final alternative is to drive to Tallwood and read the print copy of the latest newsletter that is posted in the social room. (When classes are not in session, Tallwood hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM-12 noon.)

COMMENTS/QUESTIONS/SUGGESTIONS ABOUT OLLI?
BRAIN GAMES FOR OLDER ADULTS
HERE'S HOW to express your views--

> Publicly (if you would like your comments published in this newsletter): Email your "Letter to the Editor" or "Letter to Ms. Ollie Ettakit" to the editor.

     > Privately
--
          > Contact any Board member or the Executive Director;
          > Send an email to the entire Board (email the editor or the office to have your message forwarded to all members of the Board);
          > Submit a suggestion online or in the box in the Tallwood social room or on one of the "parking lots for ideas" in classrooms; or
          > Contact the office by email or phone (703-503-3384).
THE MASON GAZETTE reports that Mason professor Andrew Carle has released a list of the best "brain games" available for those seeking to maximize cognitive function.
     According to the article, Prof. Carle, assistant professor and director of the Program in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration at Mason, developed a list of computer-based brain games that he feels are among the best current technologies for addressing cognitive declines inherent in the aging process. The list reflects his opinions and is not based on formal criteria.
     See this article for full details.

THE WAR
About a new Ken Burns film and a fall OLLI course

WETA'S "THE WAR"
DO YOU HAVE A MEMORY OR STORY OF WORLD WAR II, either personal or of family or friends, that you'd like to share? If so, public television station WETA has created a Website on The War, http://www.weta.org/war, where you can join others in sharing memories of that now-distant time.
     How does this relate to OLLI members? Because in cooperation with WETA, we will run a four-week course this fall featuring excerpts from the latest documentary by prizewinning film maker Ken Burns entitled simply "The War." OLLI is listed under "Courses" on WETA's "Screening and Special Events" Website page.
     The documentary comes to Public Broadcasting System television stations in September and concentrates on interviews of citizens, both military and civilian, from four U.S. cities and their reactions to the savage battles and homefront activities during the 44 months of WW II. (For more information on the film, see the PBS Website on The War. PBS airs a half-hour preview of the film on Sun, Jul 1, at 10:30pm.)
     Our fall course will be moderated by World War II veteran Phil True.
Note. If you missed the exceptional OLLI E-News series written by Barbara Kyriakakis about OLLI World War II veterans or would like to re-visit the articles, you may still read the stories online about Bill Helmantoler, Vince Boylan, Phil True, Chester Myslicki, David Watson, Joe Fulton, Al Smith and Gerry Holmes.

About OLLI E-News. OLLI E-News, OLLI's weekly newsletter, is emailed to OLLI members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI members and staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to the editor is 7:00 PM Wed (Mon for letters to the editor) for that week's issue. Comments, suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI E-News editor or the Publications Committee chair, Gordon Canyock.

Note about HTML graphicsIf you do NOT see photos and clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things for you. Or you could change your email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages like this newsletter in three popular email systems:

      > Microsoft Outlook Express. Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all messages in plain text."
      > Mozilla Thunderbird. Click Tools; select Options and click the Privacy icon; click the General tab. Uncheck "Block loading of remote images" and uncheck "Block Javascript." Click OK. Now click View; select "Message Body As ... Original HTML" (not Plain Text). Also in View, select "Display Attachments Inline" so that selection is checked.
     > Yahoo Mail. Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
     > AOL. Upgrade, if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.

GMU Webmail. If OLLI E-News is being sent to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against using GMU Webmail (i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read this newsletter because it is normally impossible to view the newsletter in GMU Webmail as a single integrated document, with text and accompanying images. You could forward the newsletter to your alternate Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail or Hotmail and read it there ... or just read it online at the OLLI Website after it is posted each week. Perhaps the easiest solution for those of you with GMU email accounts is to configure your desktop email system such as Microsoft Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve mail sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these instructions.

Finding the Latest Issue Online. The new weekly issue of OLLI E-News is usually posted Thursday evening. Here's how to read the online version right after it is posted:

     >
It is identified by the next number in sequence for that year -- e.g., if last week's issue number were enews1-07, the next issue number would be enews2-07 and could be found at www.olli.gmu.edu/enews2-07.htm.
     > Thus, go to the list of the last 12 issues, click the most recent issue (probably last week's), change (in the address field of your browser) the enews number to the next number, and then press Enter.
