ANYTHING BUT JELLO
A brief look back at the summer term
 By Debbie Halverson, President
SUMMER
SESSION IS WINDING DOWN and
I find end of term sad, no matter which one. Classes this term have
been terrific.
Summer courses are usually light, like our
food and clothes ... single classes that tantalize rather than many,
full serial courses that satisfy on a deeper, longer level. But this
summer’s offerings were anything but jello. We had Maimonides,
Molière, oil conservation, and ah, yes, Schubert, stuff you
could really sink your teeth into. We heard frequent comments about the
variety offered, and feedback bordered on euphoria.
I was away for two weeks of classes and so,
missed out. But at Tuesday’s Schubert class, the young instructor sang
and accompanied herself with the composer's lieder, explored his life
in depth with serious scholarship and occasional humor. Listening to
this lecture in TA-1, I thought of what a privilege we have at OLLI
when willing academics such as this woman address our group.
That afternoon, I experienced a first; the
"Five Architects" class at Reston was so fascinating that our group
didn't budge when the speaker, unaware that the class normally ends at
3:30, continued on until 4:15. Our architect speaker was offering us
viable alternatives to growth gridlock in the greater Metro area and
his impassioned soapbox arguments about what needs to be done in the
next 20 years were creative and challenging.
Members have been overheard in the parking lot
complaining about too many classes to choose from (now isn't that too
bad?). Sorry for them, wait until they see the fall catalog; that will
have them wringing their hands. |
| MISSING IMAGES IN LAST WEEK'S OLLI E-NEWS |
We
regret that some of the photos accompanying articles in last week's OLLI E-News were missing. Mason had
a power problem
affecting its Web servers, and images that had been
uploaded just before the
power outage were "lost" for a few days. They've now been restored, so
if you want to see last Friday's newsletter as it was intended to be
seen, take another look at that newsletter in
your inbox or view the online
version.

HOW AN IDEA BECOMES A CLASS
How a course is developed
 By RoseMary
Gustin, Program Committee chair
HAVE
YOU EVER WONDERED HOW OLLI CLASSES COME TO BE? The answer is
OLLI members make it happen – in one way or another. Member input is
what makes
our program so strong. Personal contact is very helpful. For example,
the
Winter ’05 class on "Wisdom of the Body" resulted from a chance
meeting between two former Mason colleagues. One was a Resource Group
Chair who
suggested that his colleague teach a biology class at OLLI. He invited
her to
the Science, Health & Technology Resource Group meeting, the idea
was
discussed, and the very popular class was born. Not all our classes
come
together with such serendipity, so we have set up a program-planning
process.
Executive Director Dick Chobot and Program Assistant Rae Schafer assist
the
process at all stages.
If
you have
some good ideas and are not interested in process, stop reading and
give your
ideas to Rae or Dick. They’ll make sure that those ideas get to the
appropriate
Resource Group.
The
Resource Groups are the heart of the process. There is a Resource Group
for
each of the categories in the catalog as well as one for Special Events
and
Friday programs. Development of a Reston Resource Group is evolving.
Currently
each Resource Group tries to include some classes for Reston. Each
Resource Group is made up of as many
OLLI members as are interested in the category and willing to attend.
They
usually meet a few weeks before the Program Committee meeting so they
can
brainstorm ideas for class topics and instructors and agree on some
worth
pursuing. Each Resource Group works to develop several potential
classes
following guidance from the Program Committee Chair on the appropriate
number
of classes allowed.
The
Resource Group Chairs present their group’s potential class ideas to
the
Program Committee (Chair, Resource Group Chairs, Executive Director,
Program
Assistant and Liaison Coordinator). Program Committee action usually
centers
around avoiding duplication and
developing synergy for potential classes and between Special
Events and
classes. Resource Group Chairs learn what other groups are planning and
can
work together on interdisciplinary classes. The Resource Group Chairs
then
contact their groups – usually by phone or e-mail – and the work of
program
planning continues there. Group members
contact speakers they know or have researched to learn their
interest in
teaching a class at OLLI. Next, they
need to get firm commitments on topics and teachers by the target
completion
dates for each term.
Each
Resource Group Chair notifies the Program Assistant and the Program
Committee
Chair of firm classes (with teachers committed) and requests a
scheduled time
slot from the Program Assistant (Rae). She maintains the calendar so
that
confusion on timing or availability of certain times is minimized. She is the only one to schedule classes.
Class descriptions and teacher bios for the catalog are sent to her.
Work on
the catalog is extensive but signals that program planning for that
term is
complete. |
Program
planning is like a river; it just keeps rolling along. The fall catalog
is
being finalized now. Resource Group
meetings are being held in preparation for the August 23 Program
Committee
meeting. That meeting will focus on Winter ’07 and give some
attention to
Spring ’07. Ideas are accepted any time
by Rae, Dick or the appropriate Resource Group chair.
| Editor's Note. Resource Group chairs
are listed on the Organization
page of our Website. Feel feel to contact any of them for further
information. |
DRAFT BYLAWS PRESENTED TO THE BOARD
The plan for Board review of the proposed
Bylaws revision
THE
AD HOC BYLAWS REVIEW COMMITTEE, established
on September 18, 2005, has submitted a proposed draft revision of the
existing Bylaws which will be discussed at the next three Board
meetings, starting today.
Bylaws are a
compilation of the fundamental
rules and regulations by which an organization is structured and
governs itself. They are equivalent to our constitution. The updated
version recognizes the role of the Executive Director, streamlines the
nominating procedures section, updates some sections to bring them into
conformance with Virginia law, and allows for a flexible Board size.
All OLLI members are welcome to come to the
meetings and participate in the deliberations.
| BRIDGE SOARS TO NEW HEIGHTS
A record turnout on the Bridge Club's
Sixth Anniversary
|

|
ON MON,
JULY 17, THE OLLI BRIDGE CLUB celebrated its Sixth
Anniversary. From the original group, the following bridge players are
still members: Gordon Canyock, Beverly George, Cloe Ingram, Bob
McArter, Stan Michaels, and Susanne Zumbro.
Following the spring semester, attendance has
swelled, reaching a
new record high on July 17 with 18 players in attendance. This
increase is due, no doubt, to the "Beginning Bridge" course taught in
the
spring semester by Gordon and Susanne. As a result of the class, 14 of
the 20 graduates have come to Bridge Club at least once this summer.
Studies have shown that playing games such as
bridge may prove a
boon to your brain power. As an added bonus to bridge at OLLI, several
new friendships
have been formed, many extending beyond the bridge game.
In the planning stage for the spring 2007 term
is a professionally taught
course on "Intermediate Bridge." In the meantime, all bridge players
are
welcome to join the Bridge Club for fun, mental stimulation and
friendship. |

FROM
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
An update
 By Dick Chobot, Executive Director
| Remember
… it’s the five architects! |
Thank
You |
So
You Think Summer was Good… |
And
Special Thanks to George Mason… |
JUST
A REMINDER: the last, but by far not the least, of the five architects,
Bill
Conklin (photo at left), will be appearing at Lake Anne on Tue, Jul
25, from
2:00-3:30.
The series has been well received and well
attended. Don’t miss the chance to hear Bill speak on the development
of Reston and Lake Anne. |
THIS
HAS BEEN A FULL and exciting summer term. We owe sincere thanks to--
- Our outstanding faculty at Tallwood
and Lake Anne;
- The Resource Groups for finding and
cultivating
instructors and for suggesting the program ideas that you have seen
brought to fruition;
- Class liaisons and the myriad of
volunteers who make
OLLI programs a reality;
- Susanne Zumbro for coordinating the
liaisons at
Tallwood; and
- My staff colleagues for making sure
things run
smoothly at OLLI everyday.
|
ALL
IS JUST AROUND the corner … and we have an outstanding program
planned. The catalog is in the advanced stages of preparation. We
are on target to have the catalog to the mailer by Fri, Aug 11, or
sooner (it should
be available on the OLLI Website on Fri, Jul 28).
OLLI members owe a debt of gratitude for
catalog editing and proofreading … tasks that seem never-ending ... to
the following member-volunteers:
- Jan Bohall,
- Louise Richardson,
- Anne Sprague,
- Mary Jane Steele,
- Phil True, and
- Josie Tucker.

YOU
MAY HAVE NOTICED that the soon-to-be-named restroom building has
been re-sided and generally spiffed up.
I learned recently that in 2005 the University
spent over $50,000 on maintenance and housekeeping at Tallwood. This is
in addition to the upgrades to the buildings.
If you are so inclined, please consider
sending a brief email to President
Alan Merten thanking him for the support that George Mason provided
to OLLI. |

EMAIL PROBLEMS? |
| Q&A |
I'm not receiving OLLI E-News via email. What should
I do? First, check with Ann
Hartmann in the office to be sure that your correct email address is
listed in OLLI records. Then, check to see if you are receiving other
emails from the office email address, olli@gmu.edu. Finally, check your
Internet Service Provider's spam/junk mail system; the newsletter may
have been filtered out and put into a spam/junk-mail folder rather than
sent to your inbox; you may need to "unjunk" the message or identify
olli@gmu.edu as an "allowed" email address. While any such email
problems are being resolved, you can always look at OLLI E-News online
(on any OLLI Website page, hover your mouse over NEWS and select OLLI
E-News from the drop-down menu). |

Thank
you to OLLI members
Cara
OLLI friends,
I wish I could write to each of you who has been so kind and supportive
of me as I go through my treatment for cancer, but time and energy are
not at the moment on my side. It is hard for me to put in words how
overwhelmed I have been by the kindnesses done for me. Your support has
made my treatment bearable. The emails, flowers, cards and visits have
been unbelievable. I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of
my heart. OLLI has enriched my life immeasurably.
Grazie e con
afetto,
-- Renata Bardo, OLLI member

About OLLI
E-News. OLLI
E-News is
OLLI's weekly newsletter; it is emailed to OLLI
members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in
session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in
classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI
members and
staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to
the editor is 7:00 PM Wed for that week's issue. Comments,
suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI
E-News editor or the
Publications Committee chair, Gordon
Canyock.
Note
about HTML graphics. If
you do NOT see

clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged
grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things
for you. Or you could change your
email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages
like this newsletter in
three popular email systems:
- Outlook
Express.
Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all
messages in plain text."
- Yahoo
Mail.
Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block
HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
- AOL.
Upgrade,
if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.
GMU Webmail.
If OLLI E-News is being sent
to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against using GMU Webmail
(i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read the newsletter because it
is not easy to view our newsletter as a single
integrated
document, with text and accompanying images. As you may know, you can
easily use other email systems, such
as Outlook Express or Yahoo Mail, to retrieve mail sent to external
addresses such as your gmu.edu address. An alternative is to read your
newsletter online at the OLLI Website after it is posted
each Friday.
