NEW REGISTRATION SYSTEM: WHAT CAN I DO?
Part 2 about the new registration system
WHAT
WILL I BE ABLE TO DO WITH THE NEW ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM? Nothing…unless
you get a User Account! How do I do that? First, wait until Tuesday; you will be able to get your User Account
starting Tue, Jul 24. Then, follow
these steps.
1. Go to www.olliatgmu.org
2. Click the link "Get a new User Account if
you are an OLLI member"
3. Complete the sign-up form (the username
might typically be your first initial and last name, as in jsmith, and
is not case sensitive; the password must be at least six characters,
all alpha
or alpha numeric, and the password is case sensitive; you make up a
security question and its answer, such as "cat's name?" and
"tabby"--used to verify your identity if you lose or forget your
password.)
An on-screen message will inform you that the
account has been created. There are "Forgot User Name?" and "Forgot
Your Password?" links on the log-in page. If you forget your username,
you can retrieve it via email on the log-in page by providing your
first and last name and email address. If you forget your password, you
can retrieve it via email on the log-in page by providing your username
and answering the security question (note: the password itself is
encrypted, and OLLI does not have access to it).
NOW YOU ARE
LOGGED IN TO THE
REGISTRATION SYSTEM. Let’s examine some other
features of the system. Note that at the top left of the screen is a
green horizontal menu bar that looks like this:
| COURSE SCHEDULE |
1. On the Home page, click the
link "View the latest course
information," or
2. Hover your mouse over the "Courses"
top-level menu (green
horizontal menu near top left of page) and select "Schedule" on the
drop-down menu.
Right now the schedule contains summer course
information. I
suggest that you "play around" with the course schedule to familiarize
yourself with the format. This online course schedule is a tool you can
use—in addition to the printed catalog or the catalog on the OLLI
Website—to plan your courses for the term. Note that by clicking on the
heading of a column you can sort the column. Fall-term course
information will be posted to the registration system Website shortly
after the OLLI fall catalog goes to press. |
|
REGISTER, CHANGE PRIORITIES, WITHDRAW FROM
A CLASS
|
Hover your mouse over the "Courses" top-level menu (green horizontal
menu near top left of page) and select the desired item ("Register,"
"Change Priorities," "Withdraw") on the drop-down menu.
Your membership must be current to register;
this means, for example, that if your membership expires on Sep 1,
2007, you cannot register for fall 2007 classes until you renew your
membership. You can join or renew a lapsed membership and register for classes in
the same transaction.
Obviously, this is where the action is.
However, these features will NOT be active until online registration
opens at 8:00 am on Wed, Aug 22.
There will be another OLLI E-News
article or a 'blast' sent to all members with email within five days of
registration start to review registration procedures. For now, remember
the following: When you register online you must select courses/events
in priority order; we will explain this in detail in the article next
week.
Note:
You cannot register using the online
registration system
unless you are willing to pay all applicable charges online using a
credit card. If there are no charges for courses/events for which you
are registering, you may register using the online system. |
| MEMBERSHIP (JOIN OLLI) |
1. On the Home page, click the link "Join OLLI if you are not already a
member," or
2. Hover your mouse over the
"Membership" top-level menu (green horizontal
menu near top left of page) and select "Join" on the drop-down menu.
This will take you to a Profile Form to
complete. Once you have
completed this form, click "Submit." This will take you to the
PayPal/VeriSign site where you input your credit-card information. More
on credit-card payments in a coming article.
Note that:
> When you authorize your credit card
payment at PayPal/VeriSign, click the "Return to OLLI button" and you
will be transferred back to the registration system Website. You can
then establish a user account as described above. In the meantime, you
will receive an email confirmation of your payment.
> If you do not complete the credit-card
transaction, the
profile information that you just filled out will not be retained.
> You will receive an immediate email
confirming your payment and welcoming you to OLLI. |
| RENEW MEMBERSHIP |
1. Hover your mouse over the "Membership" top-level menu (green
horizontal
menu near top left of page) and select "Renew" on the drop-down menu.
You will be taken to a registration screen (the idea being that
memberships are renewed coincident with the start of term registration).
2. At the top of the page you are given your
expiration date so you know when you have to renew.
3. You also can use this page to make a
donation to OLLI.
4. Again, clicking submit takes you to the
PayPal/VeriSign site for payment.
Note that:
> When you register, in addition to any
renewal fee if you have
renewed your membership, any charges for course or special-event fees
will be added to the summary amount that will be paid by credit card.
> If you later withdraw from a fee-based
special event or
course, you will receive a refund by OLLI check, not a credit back to
your card. This allows us to avoid additional credit-card fees. |
| VOLUNTEER/EDIT PERSONAL INFORMATION |
1. Hover your mouse over the "Membership" top-level menu (green
horizontal
menu near top left of page) and select "Volunteer" or "Edit Personal
Info" on the drop-down menu. The function of these screens is self
evident. Check them out!
2. Staff hopes that you will use the "Update"
capability on the
"Edit Personal Info" screen whenever you have a change, especially an
email address. This will help us to keep our lists and email groups
current and ensure you receive all OLLI communications. |
| MY ACCOUNT |
Hover your mouse over the "My Account" top-level menu (green
horizontal
menu near top left of page) and select "Get User Account," "Change
Password" or "Forgot Password" on the drop-down menu. The function of
these screens is self
evident. |
| ADMINISTRATION |
|
The "Admin" top-level menu is reserved for staff (creation of a
membership directory, control of the membership database, setting
class-size parameters, creating class lists and generating confirmation
letters) and for Board members (certain management screens). |
Do I have to use the online registration
system to register? No. You can still register by walk-in or by mail,
and you can still pay by check. Next week's article will describe how
the registration process will change slightly as we introduce the new
system.

| OLLI PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB? |
DURING SOME OF
OUR RECENT PHOTOGRAPHY COURSES, attendees have asked about the
possibility of starting an OLLI Photography Club. The purpose of this
notice is to find out if there is sufficient interest to establish one.
It is envisioned that the group will have
monthly meetings featuring how-to presentations from current members as
well as guest speakers. There will also be field trips similar to those
featured in the OLLI Photography Course at Reston this summer,
providing for more social interaction. Club activities will be designed
to accommodate a spectrum of photographic interests from basic cameras
to advanced techniques with Single Lens Reflex cameras (film and
digital).
Dan Feighery has volunteered to see what the
interest level is and help get it started if it is approved. If you are
interested in joining an OLLI Photography Club, please send Dan an
email (dfeigher@gmu.edu) with "OLLI Photo Club" in the subject
line. Let Dan know whether you would like to join the club and provide
any thoughts/desires you may have on club activities. |
PANDORA RADIO
OLLI MEMBERS ARE USERS OF THE INTERNET and
many like music, so I offer a tip about something I discovered that is
"really neat" and a big hit with the college crowd -- Pandora Radio.
It's a free Internet radio station
that plays
commercial-free music of the specific genre you like, but it
personalizes its selections for you in a unique way -- by drawing on
human analysis of the musical components of tens of thousands of songs.
Here's how Pandora describes its Music Genome Project.
We
set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level.
We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or
"genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes
capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything
from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration,
arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal
harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they
supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what
each individual song sounds like.
|
At the Pandora Website, you create a new
station by entering the name
of an artist or a song. E.g., if you enter "Neil Diamond," Pandora
searches the
Music Genome Project and plays " a
song that exemplifies the musical
style of Neil Diamond which features pop rock qualities, mild rhythmic
syncopation, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation, a
vocal-centric aesthetic and a dynamic male vocalist." Pandora
then
constantly streams a playlist/station of similar-sounding artists or
songs. You don't have to do anything more, but if you want, you can
guide it by telling it that you really like -- or really don't like --
a song that is playing. You can create other stations based on other
artists or songs, and you can do a quick mix to shuffle-play songs from
two or more of your stations.
Pandora is an easy way to enjoy
commercial-free music while working on your computer. Try it out at Pandora Radio.
(For a fascinating, detailed look at "How Pandora Radio Works," see this article
on the Howstuffworks Website.)

PROFILE
Illinois Farm Boy: Newly Elected Board
Member John Woods

By Carolyn Sanders, OLLI E-News
staff writer
A CALL TO THE ALEXANDRIA HOME OF JOHN WOODS is
answered by a very pleasant sounding lady, a.k.a. Peggy, his wife. A
former member of OLLI herself, Peggy is taking some time off with other
pursuits—imagine that! She must have some idea of how time-consuming a
Board Member's job really is and doesn't want to be OLLI-ed out. We’ll
look for her back someday.
Peggy and John each have a son and a daughter
and share three grandchildren, his is way out west and her two live
nearby in Leesburg. (I was able to assure them that this is really
close enough.)
John owns 100 acres adjacent to the family
farm, all of which are managed by his brother. If that weren't enough
to qualify John as the resident farm expert for the OLLI Investment
Forum, one of his three degrees from the University of Illinois is in
agriculture; the others are in communications and adult education.
That extensive education has been put to good
use as John alternated between academia—teaching five separate times at
his alma mater—interspersed with working overseas in development
assistance programs. He has made the world his home and office by
visiting 88 countries and working in 54. One 11-year period was spent
living in Bangkok, Thailand. Catch him in the Social Room and get him
talking—he drops country names and job acronyms like some folks mention
celebrities.
Welcome to the OLLI Board, John. We appreciate
your expertise and experience and are grateful that you are sharing
them with us. Now, if we can just get Peggy to come back...
LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
A forum for members to voice their views
on OLLI matters
WE
WILL
PUBLISH your brief letters about OLLI and, if
a response seems appropriate, we will include an OLLI response from the
executive director or the applicable officer or committee
chair in the same issue. Submit your letter via email to the editor or
submit it as a "letter to the editor" via
the online
suggestion box or the suggestion box in the Tallwood Social Room.
To be published in a given Friday's issue, the editor must receive the
letter no later than 7:00 pm on Monday so that any applicable OLLI
response can also be published. Letters can be published
anonymously but you must include your name and email address or phone
number so we can verify that you are an OLLI member.

The OLLI Library ... and the Huddleson
Library

Old Town Hall, Fairfax City
I
wanted to comment positively about the expanded "library" book shelves
in the social room. I was able to find a book that I would like to try
to read. I say 'try' because I am a slow reader and generally avoid the
regular county library because I don't have enough time to get the
book(s) read before they are due (even with renewals). So the
informality of the OLLI library is great for me.
However, for other slow OLLI readers (read
procrastinators also) I would like to share information about another
nearby informal library--the Huddleson Library on the second floor of
the Old Town Hall, the white-columned building at the corner of Main
Street and University Drive in Fairfax City. You do have to check out
the book on an old-fashioned library book card but they don't hound you
for it to be returned. The second floor also houses the Fairfax Art
League's monthly art show so you can enjoy the work of local artists
while you are browsing books in the library. The building is normally
open from 10:00 until 2:00 Monday through Thursday. There are no late
fees or computer check-outs. It is quite informal and friendly. Enjoy.

About OLLI
E-News. OLLI
E-News, OLLI's weekly newsletter, is emailed to OLLI
members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in
session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in
classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI
members and
staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to
the editor is 7:00 PM Wed (Mon for letters to the editor) for that
week's issue. Comments,
suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI
E-News editor or the
Publications Committee chair, Gordon
Canyock.
| Submissions. We encourage members
to submit articles and photos for this newsletter. Please limit
articles to about 250 words. Submit material to editor Rod Zumbro
(email rzumbro@gmu.edu, phone
703-569-2750); email strongly preferred. |
Note
about HTML graphics. If
you do NOT see
photos and
clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged
grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things
for you. Or you could change your
email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages
like this newsletter in five popular email systems:
>
Microsoft Outlook
Express and Windows Mail.
Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all
messages in plain text."
> Mozilla Thunderbird.
Click Tools; select Options and click the Privacy icon; click the
General tab. Uncheck "Block loading of remote images" and uncheck
"Block Javascript." Click OK. Now click View; select "Message Body As
... Original HTML" (not Plain Text). Also in View, select "Display
Attachments Inline" so that selection is checked.
> Yahoo Mail.
Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block
HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
>
AOL. Upgrade,
if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.
GMU Webmail.
If OLLI E-News is being sent
to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against
using GMU Webmail
(i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read this newsletter
because it
is normally impossible to view the newsletter in GMU
Webmail
as a single
integrated
document, with text and accompanying images. You could forward the
newsletter to your alternate Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail
or
Hotmail and read it there ... or just read it online at
the OLLI
Website after it is posted
each week.
Perhaps the easiest solution for those of you with GMU email accounts
is to configure your desktop email system such
as Microsoft Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve mail
sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these
instructions.
Finding
the Latest
Issue Online. The
new weekly issue of OLLI E-News
is
usually posted Thursday evening. Here's how to read the online version
right after
it is posted:
> It is identified by
the next number in
sequence for that year -- e.g., if last week's issue number were
enews1-07, the next issue number would be enews2-07 and could be found
at www.olli.gmu.edu/enews2-07.htm.
>
Thus, go to the list of the last 12
issues, click the most recent issue (probably last week's), change
(in the address field of your browser) the enews number to the next
number, and then press Enter.
