WELCOME TO THE WINTER TERM
From the president
 By Pat Carroll, President
THE WINTER TERM STARTS ON MONDAY. Everyone should have their class assignments with a minimum of wait lists. The Program Committee continues to create a catalog of classes that makes it difficult to choose. Being a native Texan, I can’t wait for the class on Texas history to start. My mother was a Texas History teacher in junior high school (before there were "middle schools"). I am sure others have similar interests that occur with each new catalog.
Thom Clement left last Friday night for a three-week missionary trip to the Republic of the Congo with his church. I know we all wish him God speed and a safe return on Feb 6. It is an extremely worthwhile and charitable mission that he has undertaken. I am sure he will perform there with the same dedication and effort that he does for us at OLLI.
The Nominating Committee under Chair Bob Lawshe is hard at work planning for the upcoming election for a new Board. The committee is looking for recommendations for nominees to run for the open Board positions. I will be finishing my six years on the Board and would highly recommend that you and every OLLI member consider becoming involved in OLLI and help make our institute a better place. OLLI's success depends on you and me.
John Woods, Chair of the Development Committee, has started planning for the silent auction to be held in conjunction with the annual meeting on May 8. He is looking for volunteers to help with the auction and to provide items to use in the auction. The Hospitality Committee will be assisting with the picnic that will be held after the annual meeting.
A reminder to all that the New Member Coffee will be in the social room and annex on Fri, Jan 30, at 10:30. All are invited to attend.
BOARD HIGHLIGHTS
About last Friday's Board meeting
By Susanne Zumbro, Acting Secretary
THE OLLI BOARD OF DIRECTORS met at Tallwood on Fri, Jan 16, for its regular monthly meeting. Fifteen of the 19 directors were present, and five other OLLI members also attended. (OLLI members are always welcome to attend and are given an opportunity to comment during the period for public comments.)
The Board approved a total of $13,000 from Friends of OLLI funds to be given as OLLI scholarships to deserving Mason students as selected by the chairs of various Mason schools and departments; this is an increase from the $8,000 total in OLLI scholarships to Mason students last year. In addition, the Board approved $1,000 from Friends of OLLI funds for the 2009 Fall for the Book festival (this is the same amount provided last year).
Executive Director Thom Clement reported that we now have 853 members (90 Loudoun-only; 763 full) compared to 731 at this time last year. Fifty-six percent of members registering during the winter registration did so online, a percentage that is gradually increasing as more members are learning how to do it and becoming comfortable with it.

Thom also advised the Board of the following revised class times during the summer and fall terms--
          Summer:
Tallwood – One class at 9:30; two classes at 11:30.
               Reston – 10:00 and 2:00.
               Loudoun – 10:30 and 1:00.
          Fall:
               Tallwood and Reston – 9:30; 11:45; 2:00.
               Loudoun – 10:30 and 1:00.

There was some discussion about electronic voting options for the upcoming Board elections in May. The ad hoc committee had just recommended developing customized software at a cost of $2,000 but some directors thought that off-the-shelf software or a Web service would be a better choice. The sense of the Board was to wait until the February Board meeting to decide the matter, which also allows time for the Nominating Committee to discuss options and voice its opinion.

The next meeting of the Board will be held at Tallwood on Fri, Feb 20, at 10:00. All OLLI members are invited to attend.

A REPORT TO BE PROUD OF, PART 2
From the executive director

By Thom Clement, Executive Director
FOLLOWING IS THE SECOND INSTALLMENT in this four-part series that showcases segments of our 2008 Annual Endowment Report submitted to The Bernard Osher Foundation.

FINANCIAL CONDITION OF THE INSTITUTE
The [$1 million] Osher Endowment was awarded to the Institute in 2006 after the completion of its second grant year. As OLLI-Mason is an independent 501(c)(3) corporation affiliated with the University, the endowment funds are held and managed by the George Mason University Foundation. In 2008, the original grant agreement of 2006 was amended in three areas to reflect changes in distribution, administrative fee, and original intent. As a result of these changes, we are guaranteed a minimum annual return of at least five percent of the principal, which is currently $1.02 million. In this uncertain economy, we have a great deal! The amended agreement also reduced administrative fees taken from the earnings.
Despite significant growth and improvements, OLLI-Mason closed 2008 in excellent financial condition, within 1/10th of one percent of the budget and with an improved cash balance for the year.
In addition to rent-free use of the University facilities, Mason covers all costs of site operation (utilities, housekeeping, basic maintenance and repairs), assistance with computer and Internet infrastructure, and access to surplus furniture. The estimated value of these services is approximately $55,000.
The University also made significant capital improvements to the Tallwood site in 2008, again at no cost to OLLI-Mason. These included repainting the exterior and interior walls in our main building and recarpeting all classrooms, our social room, and social room annex. The value of these improvements is approximately $25,000
Friends of OLLI-Mason: The institute conducts an ongoing solicitation from members for contributions to what is known as the Friends of OLLI fund. In 2008, 205 OLLI members (counting both husbands and wives) contributed generously to the Friends of OLLI fund. This represented 24 percent of our membership. The total contributions were $34,978.
     The funds were used for
  • A new office telephone system
  • Landscaping items
  • A gravel parking area
  • New signage
  • Upgrades to audiovisual equipment in Tallwood and Lake Anne: new projectors and screens at Tallwood; a new laptop and sound equipment for Lake Anne; and new microphones for each classroom
  • Scholarships totaling $8,000 for George Mason students
The Board has already approved funds for additional chair reupholstering as well as additional scholarships for 2009. For the first time, funds will be used for members who request financial support for their annual fees.

ANNOUNCING…THE SECOND SILENT AUCTION AND PICNIC
May 8 event to benefit Friends of OLLI

By Board members Bob Lawshe, Debbie Halverson and John Woods
BY POPULAR DEMAND AND BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS last year, the Second Annual OLLI Silent Auction and Picnic is scheduled for Fri, May 8, to coincide with the annual meeting. Once again we ask you to mark your calendars for this very special event, proceeds of which will go to the Friends of OLLI fund.
We need lots of things, folks, to bid on! We know OLLI members are really talented, so think what you can put up for bid. How about the recorder group playing for your next soirée? Or how about our member/cooks putting on a really nice dinner for four, six or eight people. Or fresh baked bread; a weekend or longer at a vacation home during the off season (Paris would be nice); an original painting or a custom painting; landscaping or computer services; shopping with a real pro? How about a poem for a special someone or event; or an epic poem
or a musical composition to celebrate someone's life? Help someone learn how to make beer. Give Bridge lessons or poker lessons. You get the idea? Let your imagination soar! Sorry, no electronics.
Like last year, the Tallwood auction will follow the annual meeting by 15 minutes and run for about two hours during which time you may picnic on the lawn and enjoy visiting with your friends and watching a variety of OLLI performances. At a later date, Reston and Loudoun will hold their auctions at a time yet to be determined.
Now is the time to put on your thinking cap and decide what you can offer for auction. Stay tuned for further instructions on procedures. Also, we need lots of folks to help with this auction and picnic so to volunteer, please email John Woods or Bob Lawshe.

OLLI "SPIRIT WEAR" AGAIN FOR SALE
Back by popular demand

Audiovisual Support Committee Co-chair Paul Howard, Board member Bob Lawshe, and Executive Director Thom Clement sport their OLLI "Spirit Wear" shirts at last Friday's Board meeting. Photo by Manny Pablo.
DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND, YOU HAVE A SECOND CHANCE TO ORDER OLLI "SPIRIT WEAR!" OLLI members can share their pride in our institute by wearing a shirt or sweatshirt with an OLLI logo or carrying a special OLLI tote bag. Click here to see photos of available Spirit Wear items. Order forms can be downloaded here (pdf), completed, and turned in or mailed to the OLLI office. Order forms are also available in all classrooms, including in Loudoun and Reston.
All order forms must be turned in to the OLLI office by Fri, Feb 6. We hope the items will be delivered to OLLI by the end of the winter term. In the spring, we will have some different OLLI Spirit Wear items available, including polo shirts.

OLLI COMPUTER CLUB MEETING A SUCCESS!
A crowd of 51 attended

By Paul Howard, Audiovisual Support Committee Co-chair
THE FIRST MEETING OF "OPCUG," the OLLI Personal Computer User Group, was held last Saturday afternoon in TA-1. An enthusiastic crowd of 51 members of OLLI and WACUG, the Washington Area Computer User Group (our partnering user group), was treated to several presentations. Thirty OLLI folks signed up as OPCUG members.
Jim Bruggeman of WACUG demonstrated the use of AOL email. The afternoon’s primary topic was Amazon’s Kindle Electronic Book Reader, presented by OLLI/WACUG member Lorrin Garson. A pdf version of Lorrin’s presentation is available on the "Recent Meetings" page of OPCUG's Web site (http://www.olligmu.org/~opcug/index.html) but it is very large and will take time to download. Lorrin’s presentation will be repeated at the Wed, Jan 28, evening meeting of NCTCUG (National Capital Technology and Computer User's Group) in Arlington; see details at this Web page: http://www.nctcug.org/mtgtopics.html#jan28.
OPCUG’s next meeting on Sat, Feb 21, at Tallwood will feature video coverage of and commentary on the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show held this month in Las Vegas. There will be a "live" presentation on hooking up and using digital television converter boxes. Finally, another "Learn 30" segment on basic email functions and features, along with an extended Q&A session on this and other computer topics, will conclude the meeting. See OPCUG’s Web site for more information about this new OLLI club.

EYE ON RESTON
An update on Reston matters
By Sharon Gilman, OLLI E-News Staff Writer
WE ARE VERY PLEASED WITH THE ENROLLMENT for the winter term programs. We want to thank the Reston program volunteers for a great job, and we are confident that the spring term programs will also be well received.
Mark your calendars for Fri, Feb 20. A luncheon chili party has been planned for OLLI members on that day between 12:30 and 3:00 at the Reston Community Center at Lake Anne. Watch Eye on Reston for particulars. Volunteers are needed at 2:00 on Thu, Feb 19, for food preparation and from noon to 3:00 on Fri, Feb 20, to set up and help out during the party. If you can help please contact Volunteer Coordinator Janet Cochran.
Two important tasks for OLLI are encouraging new members to join the institute and obtaining feedback from members on their satisfaction with OLLI. In Reston we do not now have a membership person who could do these things, but in the interim Al Roe has volunteered to act in that capacity. He needs three or four volunteers to help him out. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity please contact Janet Cochran.
