OLLI
MEMBERS INSPIRE MASON PROVOST
From the executive
director

OUR
INSTITUTE ENJOYS A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP with the Provost of George Mason
University, Dr. Peter Stearns. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Stearns
has taught several courses at OLLI, including one entitled "The History
of Globalization." Just last week, he contacted me to let me know that
he was giving us a signed copy of his latest book, Globalization in World History. In
the book's acknowledgments, Dr. Stearns expresses appreciation to
OLLI-Mason for helping him "bounce ideas back and forth."
According to the University's Web site, Dr.
Stearns became Provost and Professor of History at George Mason
University on January 1, 2000, having taught previously at Harvard, the
University of Chicago, Rutgers, and Carnegie Mellon. Dr. Stearns has
authored or edited over 100 books. He has published widely in modern
social history, including the history of emotions, and in world
history. As Provost at George Mason, Dr. Stearns has worked to expand
research capacities, to add or enhance centers of strength such as the
arts, biomedical research and education, and public health, and to
increase the global activities and educational goals of the University.
Isn't it great to know that the members of
OLLI can make such an impression on a scholar such as Dr. Stearns? We
look forward to many future opportunities to make an impact on the
contributions of other impressive instructors and guest speakers who
find it both pleasurable and inspiring to teach at OLLI.

BOARD MEETING
Highlights of last Friday's Board meeting
THE
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MET ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 15.
President Emmett Fenlon announced the appointment of
Jack Underhill, current OLLI secretary, as chair of the Nominating
Committee for the 2010 Board
elections. The plan is to offer an option for electronic voting by
members in the May 2010 elections, and toward that end Executive
Director Thom Clement advised that there will be a membership test of
the voting software soon. Thom also reviewed financial and operating
information, including
the following--
- In 2009, our
actual
income exceeded our actual expenses by $40,032.
- Working cash
in the bank ended the year at $128,130 (up
from $98,318).
- Friends of
OLLI has $17,310 in unobligated funds.
- Total number
of members is 893 as of the end of the fall
term.
- Beth Baroody
has been hired as the Reston site assistant,
replacing Ann Youngren.
- The two task
forces, one on organization and the other on
program, will hold their first meetings during the week of January 18.
- Plans for a
"Grand Camp" this summer are proceeding, with
an initial meeting to be held on February 17.
The Board
voted to allocate $12,000 from Friends of
OLLI funds for scholarships to deserving Mason students. Directors
approved giving $1,000 to each of the following 12 Mason
departments: History/Art History, Economics, English, Theater, Music,
Molecular/Microbiology, Environmental Science/Public Policy, Institute
for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Philosophy, School of Public
Policy, Psychology, and Education and Human Development. Departments
will select scholarship recipients. OLLI has traditionally done this
each year in
gratitude for instructor support provided to OLLI by Mason
departments.
Next month the Board will meet at Tallwood
(Friday, February 19, at 10:00), but for future planning, the Board
will
hold its March meeting at the OLLI-Loudoun site (10:30 on Friday, March
19). All OLLI members are
invited to attend meetings of the Board.
VALENTINE
PROGRAM VARIETY SHOW
Sign up now to entertain your colleagues
YES, OLLI WILL HAVE A VALENTINE'S DAY PARTY
again
this year (on
Friday, February 19 -- more about the party in a future issue of this
newsletter). Now is the time to sign
up for the Variety Show during the party!
You may recall that last year we had singers,
Readers’ Theater skits, poetry reading, lip-synching, a piano recital,
and more. Forget American Idol
-- show what you can do as an OLLI
Idol in an entertaining variety act! Submit your name and
performance title to Master of Ceremonies Manny Pablo by email or at the office, then get
yourself ready.

HOW TO COOK KOHLRABI, NEW CLUB PONDERS
OLLI Cooking Club met this week
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee Chair
| Some members of the OLLI Cooking Club:
from left, Marianne Zawitz, Jeanne Rush, Debbie Halverson, Paulette
Lichtman-Panzer. Photo by Doris Bloch. |
THE
NEWLY FORMED OLLI COOKING CLUB met on Tuesday of
this week at Doris Bloch's home and shared ideas on cooking unusual
vegetables such as kohlrabi, green cauliflower, celeriac, and other
vegetables that some members weren't accustomed to including in their
repertoires. Lunch included a variety of cheeses to further acquaint
themselves with the wide world of cheese, and each member brought a
fruit
that became the dessert. Doris included two different Brussels sprouts
dishes and a corn casserole.
The group will meet regularly and focus on
different themes, sometimes in someone's home, sometimes at an outside
place of interest that appeals to foodies. The next meeting will be
Tuesday, February 23 -- with a soup theme. Please contact me if you
would like to join
this new club.

interested in finding out whether she could still learn to speak, as at

speech could not be learned after a certain genetically programmed
"window." Fri, Jan 22, at 7:00. Research I, Room 163. Free.
