LIFE
STORIES CAN BECOME OLLI COURSES
From the executive director
MANY OLLI MEMBERS have
shown interest in writing and sharing their memoirs and life stories.
OLLI-Mason has had several courses over the years that allowed members
to reflect, discuss and write about their life experiences.
An article in the most recent LLI Review (Fall 2011) suggests a
more ambitious outgrowth of sharing life stories: developing a full
OLLI course. The article, "World War II Memories: Time Is of the
Essence," was written by Gary L. Oberts of the OLLI at University of
California, Irvine. In the introduction, Mr. Oberts states, "Heroes are
very likely sitting among you – all you have do is ask to hear their
stories."
I was intrigued and inspired by the article
because it provides a wonderful example of the "perfect storm" when
great ideas meet energetic people who then create something together.
Turning life stories into multi-week courses with lots of involvement
by members – a model for success!
The author includes in his article these five
"lessons for OLLI"—
- Time is of
the essence – do it now,
- Recruit
presenters widely,
- Capture the
presentations on video,
- Provide
support for presenters, and
- Arrange for
concurrent activities.
I encourage you to read the full article

here (pdf).
ANNOUNCING THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Nominees being sought
 By Susanne Zumbro,
2012 Nominating Committee Chair
YES, IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN. Time
to start thinking about the OLLI Board elections. Every May we elect
six OLLI members to serve on the Board of Directors for a three-year
term. Typically, the Board meets on the third Friday of each month. At
today's monthly meeting, the Board approved my appointment to chair
this year's Nominating Committee and the following OLLI members to
serve on the committee: Janet Cochran, Cloe Ingram, Rosemary McDonald,
Bob Persell and Mona Smith.
Now it's your turn: the Nominating Committee
needs your help. Is there someone you have noticed who you believe
might prove to be an asset to the OLLI Board? How about you yourself?
Would you like to make a contribution to OLLI by lending your time and
expertise in serving on the Board of Directors? Don't be shy. Step
right up and provide these names to any member of the Nominating
Committee. You may do this by email or in person. The Nominating
Committee will review all recommendations and attempt to develop the
best possible slate of candidates. We would love to hear from you.
Also, be aware that in the next few weeks, you
may be receiving a call from a member of the committee to ask if you
are willing to serve. I hope you will consider your response carefully
and agree to accept this honor of becoming a candidate for the Board.
OLLI needs good people like you.

WELCOME MEMBERS TO THE WINTER (BRRR!)
TERM
ON MONDAY, OUR LONG
HOLIDAY BREAK comes
to an end and OLLI classes begin! What better way to take our minds off
the bleak winter weather than to join fellow members in stimulating
discussions, lectures, painting, writing, bridge, knitting, walking
(for the bravest among us) or whatever suits our individual tastes. The
winter session is our shortest, but thanks to the hard work of our
resource groups, we have a lot of good stuff packed into it—more than
80 courses and special events on the three campuses. In addition to
classes, you will be hearing from class liaisons about a couple of
upcoming social events.
- Next Friday,
January 27, at 10:00 in TA-1 the Hospitality Committee will host a Kick-Off Coffee at which our new
members will have a chance to mingle with seasoned members and learn
what really makes OLLI-Mason so successful. The punch line is that we are a
cooperative whose success depends critically on the input of
member-volunteers, and opportunities abound for participating in this
endeavor. All members are invited to the coffee, and believe me,
the Hospitality Committee knows how to put together a good spread!
- On Friday,
February 10, at 1:00 in TA-1 we will have our annual Valentine's Day Party, with food and
a dazzling display of OLLI talent. The sign-up sheet is in the Tallwood
office (or sign up via email or
phone, 703-503-3384). You don't want to miss this event!
That's it for now. Enjoy your classes, stay
warm and don't slip on the ice!

ART
WORK by OLLI
Sketching Workshop students is now on display in the Tallwood social
room annex. OLLI members used colored pencil, ink and pencil to create
the sketches. Due to the abundant talent at OLLI as evidenced in
this exhibit, the spring term will include two sketching classes at
Tallwood. Enjoy the exhibit!

The
Ghost Cat
A
sudden flash of shadow and light,
the
scurrying rumble of racing feet,
announce
the intensity of the fantasy chase,
offering
brief glimpses into the primordial past,
where
ancestral cats gave chase for prey.
A
sudden flash of shadow and light,
the
instant bounding from lap and mind,
like
imagination’s fleeting figments,
announce
escape into another fantasy flight,
to
mysterious private worlds where felines dream.
A
sudden flash of shadow and light,
the
push of a nose and the curl around the legs,
the
quiet soft purr and briefly allowed strokes,
then,
in a sudden flash of shadow and light,
vanishing
in a blink, it was the ghost cat.
