TIMELY TIDBITS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Seven items of interest to members
By Dick Chobot, Executive Director
  1. Fall Catalog.
    • By now you have received the Fall Catalog. Based on the mail and the turnout on the first day of registration on the 16th, this may be a record term for OLLI. Make sure you submit your registration form as soon as possible.
    • As you review the Fall Catalog give a thought to the many volunteers who make our quality program possible. When you return to Tallwood or Lake Anne in the fall, take a moment to thank a resource group member, an instructor, a class liaison, a Board member … or better yet, consider sharing your time and talent in a volunteer role at OLLI.
  2. Loudoun County. The rumor is true! OLLI is planning a pilot test of a program in Loudoun County for spring 2007. Ray Beery, a former president of OLLI, is leading the effort. Courses will be held at George Mason's Loudoun facility.
  3. Fall for the Book.
    • Fall for the Book (FFTB), which runs from September 27 to October 5, is a favorite of OLLI members. This year we will be sponsoring and hosting a program by retired Marine Lt. Gen. Bernard Trainor, co-author of Cobra II: The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq. This session is listed as a Special Event in the Fall Catalog and registration will be required. For the full schedule of Fall for the Book, visit the FFTB Website.
    • You can make the FFTB even more special by volunteering to serve as a driver/escort for an author. Imagine getting to meet an author like Doris Kearns Goodwin up close and personal. Information on volunteering in found on the FFTB Website.
    • OLLI sponsorship of FFTB resulted from a donation of $500 from "Friends of OLLI" approved at the July Board meeting and a matching $500 gift from an anonymous donor.
  4. OLLI in the Media.
    • On August 28 (Fairfax and Arlington), "Forever Young" TV will air the episode on OLLI; other show times are shown on this schedule.  Debbie Halverson, Gordon Canyock, Kathie West and yours truly appear on the show.
    • More media exposure: OLLI has been invited to appear at another taping on the subject of lifelong learning as part of a series being developed for broadcast on Comcast. Eileen Duggan and I will be interviewed on the show. They also will be showing video material taken from the OLLI Website.
  5. Parking. As we return for the fall, parking at Tallwood may at times become congested. We ask that you park in designated spaces, respect the handicapped spaces and park courteously if you have to park in the surrounding neighborhood. Have you considered a carpool?
  6. Mark your Calendars.
    • Please note the following dates: Oct 20--OLLI 15th Anniversary Celebration; Nov 3--OLLI Town Meeting; and Dec 1--OLLI Holiday Luncheon. Details will follow as we get closer to these events.
    • Also make note of the fact that the OLLI Board of Directors meets on the third Friday of each month in TA-1. You are always welcome to attend Board meetings and make your views known to the directors.
  7. Lake Anne. OLLI at Lake Anne is an undiscovered location for many OLLI members. The fall is a great time to sign up for a course at Lake Anne and enjoy the ambiance of Lake Anne Plaza.

FUN OUT OF THE SUN
Some options to escape the heat
By Elizabeth Crawford, OLLI E-News staff writer
SUMMER TIME, AND THE LIVIN' IS HOT. How about a nice, air-conditioned movie? A number of local movie theaters offer discount prices for citizens over the age of 60. (Since OLLI members tend to look so young and vital, perhaps you should bring proof of age.)
For example, senior tickets for the University Mall Theaters cost $3.00 for all movies. The Fairfax Corner 14 Cinema De Lux and the Centreville Multiplex charge seniors $3.50 for Wednesday showings.

The AMC Theaters 7-10 in Springfield Mall (above the Food Court) invite seniors to join more than 800 of their fellow seniors for a free movie on the first Thursday of every month. Doors open at nine for the movie that starts at 9:30, and free coffee, orange juice and cinnamon rolls are available. Call 703-971-3000 to to find out which movie is being shown.

Check your newspaper for other movie discount prices. Phone numbers are listed, and further information about senior discounts is given, at the end of the movie times recordings.

BOOK REVIEW
A new occasional feature
By Rod Zumbro, OLLI E-News editor
LEE CHILD

HOW MANY OF YOU ENJOY CURLING UP WITH A GOOD BOOK? The problem is, there are so many good books out there! We readers can use some recommendations, and that's where sources like The Washington Post's Book World, C-SPAN2's Book TV, and even The Daily Show with Jon Stewart can help by telling us about interesting books and by interviewing authors who are promoting their books.
As a new occasional feature, OLLI E-News will publish short recommendations from OLLI members. I will start out by offering some recommendations in a specific genre that I enjoy reading: crime fiction.
Two of my favorite authors are best-selling writers, each of whom has created an interesting, exciting, well-developed main character and then has featured the same character in a series of novels--any one of which can be read on its own (it's not necessary to have read the others).
JAMES LEE BURKE

  • Lee Child has written 10 novels featuring ex-Military Police major Jack Reacher, a multi-talented loner who repeatedly overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds with his sharp mind and occasional violent actions; these books are page-turners, hard to put down. The first Jack Reacher novel is Killing Floor (1997); the most recent is The Hard Way (2006).
  • James Lee Burke has written 15 novels featuring Sheriff's Deputy Dave Robicheaux of New Iberia Parish, Louisiana; these tales, with their rich language and unforgettable Southern characters, take you deeply into a bayou culture that most of us will never personally experience. The first Dave Robicheaux novel is The Neon Rain (1987); the most recent is Pegasus Descending (2006).
Once I discovered how much I liked these books, I decided to start reading the first in each series and then read subsequent ones chronologically, which is what I'm still doing. I always put them on hold online at the Fairfax County Public Library -- a wonderful resource that has (on the shelf or on order) almost every book one could ever want to read.

Book lovers. Submit your short recommendations for a particular genre to the OLLI E-News editor.

About OLLI E-News. OLLI E-News is OLLI's weekly newsletter; it is emailed to OLLI members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI members and staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to the editor is 7:00 PM Wed for that week's issue. Comments, suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI E-News editor or the Publications Committee chair, Gordon Canyock.

Note about HTML graphicsIf you do NOT see photos and clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things for you. Or you could change your email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages like this newsletter in three popular email systems:
  • Outlook Express. Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all messages in plain text."
  • Yahoo Mail. Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
  • AOL. Upgrade, if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.
GMU Webmail. If OLLI E-News is being sent to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against using GMU Webmail (i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read the newsletter because it is not easy to view our newsletter as a single integrated document, with text and accompanying images. As you may know, you can easily use other email systems, such as Outlook Express or Yahoo Mail, to retrieve mail sent to external addresses such as your gmu.edu address. An alternative is to read your newsletter online at the OLLI Website after it is posted each Friday.
