NEW NAMETAGS COMING
From the executive
director
IT IS PART OF OUR CULTURE AT OLLI
to
develop and nurture friendships and collegial relationships with fellow
members. In addition to the intellectual stimulation offered by our
courses, members rank social interaction with interesting people high
on their lists of reasons for joining OLLI. In the days when our
membership was no more than 100, it was easy to know almost everyone.
Those days are long past. Our total membership exceeds 850 -- hence,
the OLLI nametags.
In mid-September, you will be receiving a
mailing that includes a brand-new nametag. We ask that you insert this
new version in your existing nametag holder and wear it faithfully each
time you attend an OLLI function. Please consider this an expectation
that is a courtesy to your fellow members. The new version will also
include a small notation about your membership anniversary date. Full
OLLI members will have pastel green nametags, Loudoun-only members will
have
yellow nametags, and OLLI Board directors will have white nametags.
Log in to
the Member Portal,
click Membership/Edit Personal Info, click Edit, then enter your
preferred name.
We want your nametag to feature your preferred name or nickname. Take a
look at the way your name is spelled on the fall catalog that you just
received. Unless you tell us otherwise, that is the name that will be
printed on your nametag. You can use the online Member Portal to change
your preferred name, or you can email us at olli@gmu.edu to tell us the name you
want on your nametag. Please do this by Mon, Sep 7, so we’ll have time
to print them correctly. If you need a replacement for your plastic
holder, please see the OLLI staff assistant at each site.
PROGRAM
CORNER
Exploring science, technology and health
By Kathryn Russell, Program Committee Chair
I 'M HAVING FUN THIS WEEK attending
all the Resource Group meetings. As you know by now, these groups of
OLLI volunteers work their "magic" to develop the eye-popping number of
courses -- four times a year, year after year. Sitting in on the
Science, Technology and Health session, I was amazed at the ideas
bouncing around the room. I now understand why there are so many
fascinating courses being offered in this subject area during the
upcoming fall term. If you are still undecided on course selections or
find that you have time for more, consider the multi-teacher courses
(the 800’s in the catalog) that bring us expertise in many fields.
Have a look at one of science and technology’s
new courses, " Topics
in Engineering" (F803), which takes us from problems of water
sources to those of outer space. Among the featured discussions are
these:
- Water
resources -- Retired Brig. Gen. Gerald Galloway, Jr., U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers
- Space safety
-- George Levin, former NASA engineer
- Satellite
communications -- Dick McClure of Applied Physics Lab, Johns Hopkins
- Impact of
engineering on everyday life – Stu Williams, Army engineer
Several other science and technology courses
bring together more experts in many fields. In " U.S.
Forest Sustainability" (F801), for example, U.S. Forest Service
leaders look at the challenges of forest management from many different
angles. Another hot-button issue will be explored in " Energy
Policy and Electric Vehicles" (R805). Two courses -- " Muscles
in Motion" (F804) and " Health
and Well Being" (L808) -- focus on personal wellness and even offer
some solutions to those physical challenges we all face. Then you can
get acquainted with some big names in science in " Interesting
People and Ideas of Science" (R806).
Even if you’re not scientifically oriented,
these multi-instructor courses offer wonderful opportunities for
getting acquainted with new topics. And isn’t that part of the beauty
of our OLLI program?

Community Center of Northern Virginia, 8900 Little River Turnpike,
Fairfax. The event will run from 9:00 to 3:00. The fair comprises
interactive and informative programs promoting active aging through
healthy lifestyles that help us live longer, more independently and
more positively. The fair is geared for Northern Virginians who are in
their 50s and older.
Participants in the fair may choose among six
interactive small-group workshops on healthy aging topics:

Mason University associate professor of English Don Gallehr. Preserve

Planning" (or "Must I Leave Everything to My Children?") led by Helen
Cohn Needham and Susan Pollack of the law firm Needham, Mitnick &
Pollack. Learn about financial options for the future.
- "Sexuality After 50" led by Ruth
Kershner, a social worker in Jewish Social Service Agency's Aging
Services Department. Gain insights into the impact of physical changes
on sexuality, dating for people over 60, and coping with widowhood.

properties, then bring home a fledging plant you start in a pot
yourself.
- "Take Charge of Your Health in
Retirement" led by Virginia Inglese, registered dietician and social
worker. Discover strategies to keep you healthy and energized.
- "Healthy Brains" led by social worker
