LOOKING BACK AT OUR
HISTORY
HAVING TROUBLE
KEEPING UP WITH YOUR INTERNET PASSWORDS?
A solution to help OLLI members
 By Paul Howard,
Board member
DURING THIS YEAR'S WINTER AND SUMMER TERMS, I
taught the Home Computer
Security module of OLLI’s Identity Theft course (an expanded version of
the course is being offered
this fall as course 203, "Avoid Being Targeted for
Identity Theft"). A major concern that
OLLI students expressed was creating secure passwords for use with
their financial Websites and keeping track of all the user IDs and
passwords that electronic commerce requires. To help address these
concerns, I've arranged a 20 percent discount for OLLI members
interested in buying RoboForm, a password manager and form-filler
program that vastly simplifies the Internet life of computer users.
A product of Fairfax County firm Siber
Systems, RoboForm keeps your personal data encrypted on your computer. It makes signing on to most Websites or
filling out an electronic commerce order form a matter of a single
mouse click. Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers are
supported; a RoboForm toolbar is added to your browser. Sorry, RoboForm
doesn't work on Macs or with the Opera browser for Windows.
A free version is available and will
work indefinitely but users should note that after 30 days, automatic
log ons are restricted to a maximum of 10 Websites (the paid
version
has no restrictions). Learn more about RoboForm from its Website. I demonstrated
RoboForm at a recent meeting of the OLLI Investment Forum, where it
received considerable interest, and I discovered at least one other
Forum member using the program with great success.
To order and receive the 20 percent discount
for OLLI members, click this
link.
Editor's note. I've tried
RoboForm, and I am impressed ... especially with how it
automatically logs me onto almost all of my financial sites, even when
previously I had to not only enter a user ID and password but
also
select, e.g.,
"banking," from a menu (see image above). I also like the fact that you
can print
a
plain-text list of all your login information as a hard-copy backup.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
A new club holds its first meeting
Photo of red
panda taken by a
club member
THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED OLLI
PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB had
an initial meeting at Tallwood last Friday with 16 people attending.
The group laid out a general approach on how the club would function.
Monthly club meetings will be at Tallwood on the last Friday of the
month at 9:30 (thus, the next meetings will be on Sep 28, Oct 26, and
Nov 30).
There will also be monthly field trips with
the date and location decided by the group each month. The first of
these will be Fri, Sep 7, to take pictures of the OLLIwood gardens and
anything else that looks interesting at Tallwood.
There were three elements to the presentation part
of the meeting--
>
The instructor
from the summer photography course showed a book of photographs taken
by
those participating in that course. He also briefly discussed some
online sources for developing such books.
> There was a
digital projection of images from several members who had responded to
a challenge to take some pictures focusing on lines.
> There was a 35mm slide
show depicting ordinary things taken from unordinary perspectives. |
After the meeting, some folks had time to chat
awhile and share things they were doing. All in all, the meeting was a
great start for this new OLLI initiative. If you are interested in
joining the group, send an email
to dfeigher@gmu.edu with OLLI Photography Club in the subject line,
and
you will be put on the distribution list for club activities.
COME SEE THE LOUDOUN CAMPUS
An invitation to all members
EARLIER
EDITIONS OF OLLI E-NEWS HAVE
NOTED that
an Open House will be held for prospective members and guests at the
OLLI campus in Loudoun on Mon, Sep 10, at 10:30. Loudoun newspapers
have advertised the event, and flyers are being distributed in
libraries and other public buildings.
We invite
all OLLI members to join us at the Open House to view the Mason
facility, enjoy coffee and sweets, and to help us spread the good word
about all OLLI has to offer. A short program is being planned to
describe OLLI’s programs, including the courses being offered in the
Loudoun pilot program this fall.
A map and directions to the Mason Loudoun
campus can be accessed at this Google maps page.
THE CONVERSATION
PROGRAM
You can help international students with
their English
By Joan
Crawford, George Mason University
THE
ENGLISH
LANGUAGE
INSTITUTE AT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY will again sponsor "The
Conversation Program," an extracurricular program for
international students who would like to
improve their oral English skills by
participating in small-group discussions. This is an excellent
volunteer opportunity for retired teachers and other OLLI members who
enjoy meeting
internationals.
This semester the conversation program will
begin Tue, Sep 18, and run for eight weeks, until Nov 6. There will be
an orientation meeting Tue, Sep 11, for those who are interested in
volunteering to lead a small group of international students which will
meet one hour a week to practice their English and learn about American
culture.
If you are interested in volunteering or in
learning more about the program, please email me
(or phone 703-993-3660) and provide your phone number and the best time
to
reach you. Thanks much.

About OLLI
E-News. OLLI
E-News, OLLI's weekly newsletter, is emailed to OLLI
members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in
session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in
classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI
members and
staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to
the editor is 7:00 PM Wed (Mon for letters to the editor for which an
OLLI response is appropriate) for that
week's issue. Comments,
suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI
E-News editor or the
Publications Committee chair, Gordon
Canyock.
| Submissions. We encourage members
to submit articles and photos for this newsletter. Please limit
articles to about 250 words. Submit material to editor Rod Zumbro
(email rzumbro@gmu.edu, phone
703-569-2750); email strongly preferred. |
Note
about HTML graphics. If
you do NOT see
photos and
clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged
grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things
for you. Or you could change your
email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages
like this newsletter in five popular email systems:
>
Microsoft Outlook
Express and Windows Mail.
Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all
messages in plain text."
> Mozilla Thunderbird.
Click Tools; select Options and click the Privacy icon; click the
General tab. Uncheck "Block loading of remote images" and uncheck
"Block Javascript." Click OK. Now click View; select "Message Body As
... Original HTML" (not Plain Text). Also in View, select "Display
Attachments Inline" so that selection is checked.
> Yahoo Mail.
Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block
HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
>
AOL. Upgrade,
if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.
GMU Webmail.
If OLLI E-News is being sent
to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against
using GMU Webmail
(i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read this newsletter
because it
is normally impossible to view the newsletter in GMU
Webmail
as a single
integrated
document, with text and accompanying images. You could forward the
newsletter to your alternate Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail
or
Hotmail and read it there ... or just read it online at
the OLLI
Website after it is posted
each week.
Perhaps the easiest solution for those of you with GMU email accounts
is to configure your desktop email system such
as Microsoft Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve mail
sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these
instructions.
Finding
the Latest
Issue Online. The
new weekly issue of OLLI E-News
is
usually posted Thursday evening. Here's how to read the online version
right after
it is posted:
> It is identified by
the next number in
sequence for that year -- e.g., if last week's issue number were
enews1-07, the next issue number would be enews2-07 and could be found
at www.olli.gmu.edu/enews2-07.htm.
>
Thus, go to the list of the last 12
issues, click the most recent issue (probably last week's), change
(in the address field of your browser) the enews number to the next
number, and then press Enter.
