A VERITABLE GOLD MINE FOR OLLI MEMBERS!
From the executive director
By Thom Clement, Executive Director
A LITTLE-KNOWN GEM IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE for all OLLI members who use a computer. It's called "DocStore" and you can get to it with one-click of your mouse from our OLLI home web page. Just look at the Quick Links on the left-hand side of the screen and you'll see a list of frequently used sites -- "DocStore" is the next to last item in the list.
Once you see the DocStore on your screen, you'll notice that the listings are categorized. Documents that are to be used in the current OLLI term will always be on top, followed by documents that have been used in previous OLLI terms, beginning with the Fall 2008 term.  Move on down the screen using your scroll bar and you'll see that other categories are "Documents and Links for Clubs and Activities," "Forms and other Documents" and "Tech Tips." There is also a complete archive of almost every OLLI course catalog going back to 1991.
You could spend hours perusing these documents and I hope you will check out those of interest. Just from this most recent summer term, you can find information from nine courses, including: "Little Known Women Composers," "Charles Darwin and His Big Idea," and "Powerpoint Basics and Beyond." If you want to find out about how to take care of your roses, look in the Archived Documents under "900 Other" and you'll see "Everything's Coming Up Roses" -- there is a complete Powerpoint presentation that was used in that class.
In the Forms section, you can find everything from the current Registration Form, to the Bus Waiver form for OLLI trips, to the new "A Teacher's Manual" that was recently written by OLLI member Debbie Halverson.
Besides being such a great resource for information, the DocStore has made it much more convenient for OLLI's instructors to send background information, articles, or links for further research about their course. By using it, OLLI can save on printing costs by reducing the number of copies of handouts.
Many thanks to Paul Howard, who created the DocStore section of our Web site, and John West, who maintains it.

PROGRAM CORNER
Undersubscribed courses you’ll love
By Kathryn Russell, Program Committee Chair
N OW THAT REGISTRATION HAS ENDED, all we have to do is sit back and anticipate the beginning of an exciting fall term at OLLI. When your confirmation letter arrives, however, you may find that you’re on a waiting list for an oversubscribed class. Or you may find you have time in your schedule to add another class or two. This is the time to check out the list of “open” classes. You’ll find some real treasures here that perhaps you hadn’t considered.
Take a close look at the literature and languages classes that are typically smaller, allowing for more student/teacher interaction than the large lecture courses. One of these, “More than the (W)right Stuff” (F405), is taught by Mason professor Keith Clark, who previously brought us a popular course on the writings of August Wilson and Toni Morrison. Prof. Clark is a dynamic teacher, one of Mason’s best, who engages his audience with his warm, conversational style as well as his depth of scholarship and knowledge. You won’t want to miss this very special instructor.
In addition, you’ll find plenty of mental gymnastics in some of the other fine literature and language courses, among them, “Shakespeare’s Coriolanus” (F404) and “The Fifties Zeitgeist in American Short Fiction” (R411). Also think about challenging your brain with one of our language courses. Some OLLI members will be interested in a new language course, “Advanced Conversational Spanish” (F503). Or look at “Conversational Spanish” (R504).
The Reston location offers some other very attractive possibilities as well. Have you ever found yourself unable to attend a National Park Service class? Then this is your opportunity to take “WWII to Cold War” (R310). Park rangers Michael Kelly and Brad Berger will bring history alive for you. If the civil war holds your interest, “Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley” (R313) also offers a bus tour of historical sites in conjunction with the course. Or learn more about “George C. Marshall: An American Leader” (R312), which features a related field trip. The Philosophy/Religion group is offering “Questions of Value” (R606) and “Messianic Prophecies of Hebrew Scriptures” (R605)
If the Loudoun site is your major destination, you’ll find more possibilities for filling your schedule. Here you can explore “Basic Computers” (L810) and learn some pointers on investing in “Back to Basics” (L208). Or do a little “virtual” traveling in “Trip Tales” (L903) and “Land of the Midnight Sun” (L970).
As you can see, you still have many opportunities to fill out your schedule with some very fine undersubscribed classes at all three locations. Just fill out one of those “add” forms in the office, or go to the OLLI Member Portal and find “Register/Add course” on the login page under the pull-down menu “Courses.” Then get set for a fantastic fall term at OLLI.
Next week: Special Events you won’t want to miss.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION
An event to recognize OLLI volunteers
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee Chair
AS MANY AS TWO HUNDRED VOLUNTEERS received invitations this week to the Volunteer Recognition Party to be held on Friday, Sep 18, 1:00 to 3:00 at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Olley Lane.
The last time we had such an event was in the spring of 2007. The Board, as representatives of our membership, is hosting this event to let our volunteers know how important their efforts are to the success of OLLI. Not included on the guest list are the many volunteer OLLI teachers who are reminded that they will be feted in the spring at their own event.
Names for the invitation list were accumulated from input from committee chairs, the liaison list from this past summer, and other activities where volunteers made it all happen. With a total of better than 850 members including Tallwood, Loudoun and Reston, the number of our volunteers is a good 25% of our membership. Hurrah for them!
In putting together a list from a variety of sources, it is possible that someone’s name was left falling through the cracks. If you have not received an invitation and you believe you should have, do let me know by emailing me your name and your volunteer activity and we shall rectify that at once.
Sorry to those who have a partner or spouse they would like to bring along; with such a large guest list, that’s just not practical.

FALL FOR THE BOOK FESTIVAL TO START SOON!
Coming Sep 21-26

By Paulette Lichtman-Panzer, OLLI member, Fall for the Book Board member
MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the six-day Fall for the Book Festival running from Mon, Sep 21, through Sat, Sep 26. What could be more enjoyable than seeing many of your favorite authors up close and personal and having an opportunity to ask them questions? The festival celebrates literature, learning, and all types of books (both fiction and nonfiction), poetry, and plays. Two of the notable authors who will be making presentations include novelists E.L. Doctorow and Sherman Alexie. To see the complete list of daytime and evening events, go to fallforthebook.org. Remember, all events are free!
This year, OLLI is again a sponsor of Fall for the Book, and three Fall for the Book events are listed as special events in the catalog (click here for details).
  • During the week of the festival you can hop on a free bus at Tallwood (leaves OLLI at 12:45) to take you over to the campus to hear these two fascinating presentations:
    • F974 Understanding Obama: Three Views at 1:30 on Tue, Sep 22; and
    • F975 Freedom Without Walls: The Presidents at 1:30 on Thu, Sep 24.
  • At Tallwood on Fri, Sep 25, at 1:00, author Carol Berkin will speak (event F976 On the Homefront: Civil War Wives). Ms. Berkin is the author of Civil War Wives: The Lives and Times of Angelina Grimke Weld, Varina Howell Davis, and Julia Dent Grant.
If you have any questions, please contact me via email or telephone (703-569-4983).
