WELCOME TO THE FALL TERM
From the president
 By Emmett Fenlon, President
THE LIFELONG LEARNING ADVENTURE CONTINUES.
Our outstanding program starts on Monday, September 21, with the 2009
fall term.
It will be wonderful to greet old friends and to make new ones. At all
three of OLLI's campuses--Fairfax, Reston and Loudoun--the enthusiasm
is
contagious.
OLLI courses, special events and activities
provide both intellectual stimulation and social interaction for the
members of OLLI. This has resulted in our growth since
1991 from about 100 members to the present 880 members and
from one classroom at Mason's
Commerce II building in Fairfax to our many classrooms located at the
Fairfax, Reston and Loudoun campuses.
Almost every lifelong-learning institute has a
unique pricing
structure for membership and courses. Our Institute's pricing structure
allows members to take an unlimited number of courses and events during
four terms totaling 26 weeks per year for one annual membership fee.
This year OLLI is offering over 370 courses and events. This
compares favorably with other institutes, many of which offer fewer
courses and limit the number of
courses their members can take. A number of institutes even
charge an extra fee for each course taken.
Let us continue the
journey of lifelong learning.
NEW MIDDAY TIME
SLOT IN FAIRFAX AND RESTON
From the executive
director
OLLI MEMBERS ATTENDING CLASSES IN FAIRFAX
AND RESTON should
note the new time slot at midday -- 11:45 until 1:15. To allow more
time for transition between the
first class of the day and the midday class, we have given ourselves 15
extra minutes. For some time now, we have heard that the 30-minute
interval in the previous schedule just didn't allow enough time for
those who "linger" from the 9:30 class and those who come a little
early for the midday class. This has also aggravated the parking
problem at Tallwood.
The third time slot of the day remains at 2:00
to 3:30. Club activities on Wednesday afternoon have been adjusted to
allow for a full 30-minute lunch break.
We'll be monitoring the situation to determine
if the extra 15 minutes helps with the transition both in the
classrooms and in the parking lots.
Welcome back!

A TIME TO BELONG
Welcoming our new members

By Elizabeth
Crawford, OLLI E-News
Staff Writer
IN
RECENT MONTHS, news reports have focused
on senior citizens, and the pictures they present have often been
gloomy. Many seniors worry about investment losses, a decline in
property values and the future of health care. While OLLI membership
does not include a magic wand to solve these problems, it offers the
next best thing: courses to enlighten us on these topics (and many
others), and lots of interesting people ready to engage in civil
discussion. We are fortunate to be members of OLLI and eager to share
its riches with those who have chosen to join us.
Please look
for red dots on nametags and welcome these new members...

LOUDOUN OPEN HOUSE
Enthusiastic response at last week's event
Slideshow
of three
photos taken by Suzy Jampoler.
THE
LOUDOUN OPEN HOUSE ON SEPTEMBER 9 brought
many new prospective members to tour the Loudoun campus and talk to
instructors, current members and OLLI Board members. Instructors gave
informal descriptions of the upcoming fall classes, members answered
lots of questions about Loudoun over coffee and goodies, and Board
members highlighted the benefits of OLLI membership.

Topic next Friday: travel photography
THE
SEPTEMBER PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB MEETING AT 9:30 ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, in TA-1 will feature OLLI member Lorrin
Garson with a presentation on travel photography entitled "Scenes From Around the World."
He and his
wife Ann have
visited more than 100 countries over the
years, and Lorrin will
display some of the best pictures they've taken. He will talk about how
he and Ann take photos and
the cameras they use ... remembering, Lorrin says, that they are not
professional photographers, just travelers. For comic relief he
might also show a handful of their really bad shots.
All
OLLI members are welcome.
