SOUNDS LIKE OLLI TO ME...
From the executive
director
MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO LIVED IN ROME from 106 to 43 BCE. He is widely
considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. Based on
many of his writings, you might say that he was one of the original
lifelong learning institute members. Here is a quote shared with me
this week by OLLI member John Coffey:
From Cicero's essay, "On Old Age"--
"So
old age, you see, far
from being sluggish and feeble, is really
very lively, and perpetually active, and still busy with the pursuits
of earlier years. Some people never stop learning, however old they
are."
|
According to Wikipedia, "Cicero is generally perceived to be one of the
most versatile minds of ancient Rome. He introduced the Romans to the
chief schools of Greek philosophy and created a Latin philosophical
vocabulary, distinguishing himself as a linguist, translator, and
philosopher ... Today, he is appreciated primarily for his humanism and
philosophical and political writings."
To the more than 880 members of OLLI-Mason,
Cicero's description of "Old Age" rings a very familiar note. I think
this wise Roman philosopher would have fit right in to any of our OLLI
classrooms, don't you?
BOARD HIGHLIGHTS
Last Friday's Board meeting
THE
OLLI BOARD OF DIRECTORS MET FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18.
Executive Director Thom Clement and Treasurer David Mason presented and
discussed the draft budget for calendar year 2010, which includes a
recommended
increase in full-membership dues from $350 to $365. The Board voted to increase dues to $365
starting with the winter term (begins
January 25, 2010) . This vote
represents guidance for the final 2010
budget, which will be presented to the membership at the November 6
town
meeting and to the Board, for official approval, at its November 20
meeting.
Planning Committee Chair Valerie Braybrooke made a
presentation on Pathways to the
Future, a report to the
Board that summarizes OLLI's current situation and recommends
short-term and strategic actions in five areas (membership, program,
facilities, finances and organization). Pathways will be the basis for an
off-site Board retreat on October
23. OLLI members are welcome to read Pathways
( click
to view pdf document) and, if desired, contact OLLI
with their views.
After considerable discussion concerning
Loudoun, the Board approved a
resolution to formally accept
the Loudoun program as an "integral and permanent part" of OLLI.

OLLI VOLUNTEERS WERE HONORED
by the Board of Directors at a volunteer appreciation reception last
Friday afternoon at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Some 200
volunteers were invited, and a large number of much-appreciated
volunteers showed up for tasty snacks and drinks, casual conversation,
brief remarks by President Emmett Fenlon, Executive
Director Thom Clement and the event organizer, Membership Committee
Chair Debbie Halverson, entertainment by the Drama Club (three
Board members and one Board wife), and door prizes. An excellent time
was had by all.
For those invited who were unable to attend,
favor packets will be available for you to pick up at the office where
you most frequently attend classes--Tallwood, Lake Anne or Loudoun;
please do so before October 8.
Note about slideshows.
We have decided to change how we do photo slideshows in
this newsletter. Rather than having the slideshow download
and start playing automatically,
we are letting you decide
whether or not you wish to view the
slideshow. If you want to see it, just click the image or the provided

OLLI BOOTH
AT FESTIVALS
Volunteers needed for Fairfax City Fall
Festival
 By Carole Richard, Booth Coordinator
THE NEXT (AND LAST) OLLI "BOOTH" EVENT OF
THIS YEAR
will be in Fairfax City on Saturday, October 10 (rain day Sunday,
October 11), from 10:00 until 5:00. This is the Fairfax
City Fall Festival--which, as many of you know, is a great place to
start early holiday shopping and pick up some interesting freebies.
We need two
volunteers for each of the
four shifts (9:30-11:30; 11:30-1:30; 1:30-3:30; 3:30-5:00).
Please send me an email if you
can help us
by staffing this booth and getting the message out to those who do not
know about OLLI.
The previous OLLI
booth.
Better late than never, our appreciation goes to Mel Goldfarb,
Florence Adler, Louise Richardson, Susan Miller and Manny Pablo for
helping staff the OLLI booth at the Burke Festival on Saturday and
Sunday, September 12 and 13 (OLLI shared the booth with
Friends of Music and Friends of the Center for the Arts).

EYE ON RESTON
An update of interest to all OLLI members
 By Sharon Gilman, OLLI
E-News Staff Writer
ENROLLMENT FOR THE FALL TERM IS
EXCELLENT. Thanks go
to all the resource groups that develop and schedule OLLI programs.
OLLI offers a total of 84 courses this term at the three locations.
Reston accounts for 31% of these and Loudoun for 18%, so together
Reston and Loudoun account for approximately half of the courses being
offered.
A combined Reston and Loudoun resource meeting
was held last month to discuss ways in which the two locations can
coordinate their efforts to schedule programs of high interest to
members. In addition, many resource-group meetings were held with
representation from all three campuses. As the members from the three
campuses share their experiences and talents, OLLI will become a
stronger and more viable Institute.
OLLI at
Reston will host an October Festival
on Friday, October 2, from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Lake Anne Community
Center featuring German beverages, food and music. All OLLI members are
welcome to attend. There is a
small $8.00 fee to cover most of the expenses. Sign-up sheets and
envelopes for the fee (checks should be made payable to OLLI) are in
the classrooms.
Sixteen people from the greater Reston area
joined OLLI this fall. We welcome all the new members and look forward
to meeting and getting to know them. At the September 17 Reston
membership meeting, we introduced a
new-member recruitment drive called GRAM (Greater Reston Area
Membership). We have set a goal of 40
new members to be recruited between September 1, 2009 and August 31,
2010. We are forming a Reston
Membership Committee to help us with this
initiative. If you'd like to join this committee, please contact
Volunteer Coordinator Janet Cochran.
OLLI at Reston has a group of dedicated
members who put forth much time and effort that contribute to its
success. To avoid some of our volunteers doing more than their fair
share, more volunteers are needed to
share in the responsibility for
OLLI's future. Please contact Janet Cochran if you are willing
to lend
a helping hand.
See you at
the Lake.
