COMING
ATTRACTIONS: OLLI non-class
events for next two weeks. |
Editor's Note. On behalf of the
membership, I want to express my deep appreciation to guest editor
John
West for producing the Sep 8, Sep 15 and Sep 22 issues of OLLI
E-News
while Susanne and I were enjoying the OLLI Trip to Ireland (we're presenting a winter-term Trip Tale,
with video, on the Ireland trip). Because of
John's
dedication and expertise, there
was no break in the OLLI
communications chain. OLLI was able to
continue informing, engaging and stimulating its members via our weekly
newsletter. Thanks very much, John!

WHO TOLD YOU ABOUT OLLI?
Let's see who our best recruiter is
 By Debbie Halverson, President
LAST
FRIDAY AT THE NEW MEMBER COFFEE, I
spoke to new members about the wise decision they had made in choosing
OLLI for a retirement activity. I had just been given a list taken from
the registration forms about where new members had heard about OLLI.
The overwhelming majority of them had heard about it from a friend,
word of mouth, a neighbor, someone who actually spoke to them with
enthusiasm and good intentions.
This is
not
breaking news, but it does
underscore once again how important our current members are to our
recruiting effort. More than once in the last week, two
long-time
members told me that they speak frequently with people they meet about
OLLI, just in casual conversation, and, of course, they carry a bunch
of brochures with them or in their cars. I do that too.
At the coffee I suggested that those who
had heard of OLLI from a current member might write down that person’s
name along with their own on a slip of paper and put it in my folder in
the social room. In
thinking about it later, I decided to expand on that idea and ask that
all members let us know who introduced them to OLLI and I shall have a
box in the social room for the purpose of your putting down the name of
your informant along with yours. Might be an interesting way to see who
is our best recruiter.
Just put your minds to the project and try to
recall who said the magic words to you, "You really should join OLLI." |
AMENDMENTS TO
BYLAWS
Revised bylaws up for vote by the
membership
 By Gordon Canyock,
Ad Hoc Bylaws Revision Committee chair
AS
REPORTED IN THE BOARD HIGHLIGHTS ARTICLE in last week’s OLLI E-News, the Board has
unanimously approved a major revision to OLLI’s bylaws, and within
about
two weeks you should receive a packet that will contain the
Committee’s final report, a marked-up version of the bylaws
(highlighting the many additions and deletions with the reasons for
those changes), and a clean copy of the new bylaws.
The Board has called
a special meeting of the
membership for 10:00 on Friday, Nov 14, at Tallwood to vote to accept
or reject the bylaws. I will be there to answer any questions,
but
since you may vote in advance of the meeting, I encourage you to
contact me directly by email
or in person so that I may answer your
questions and explain our rationale. I will be available to discuss
your concerns at the following times (when it's at Tallwood, look for
me in the Social Room or the Annex).
- Tue, Oct 17,
1:00–2:00 at Lake Anne Church
- Fri, Oct 20
following the OLLI luncheon at Christ Lutheran
Church
- Mon, Oct 23,
11:00–11:30 at Tallwood
- Tue, Oct 24,
1:00–2:00 at Tallwood
- Wed, Oct 25,
1:00–2:00 at Tallwood
- Fri, Nov 3,
before, during or after the Town Meeting
- Mon, Nov 6,
1:00–2:00 at Tallwood
OLLI 15TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Don't miss OLLI's big party!
 By Rod Zumbro, OLLI
E-News editor
OLLI
IS HAVING A PARTY. Y'ALL COME!
The site is Christ Lutheran Church, where we
hold mega-sized classes, so there'll be enough room for everyone (for
driving directions, visit our Website's maps page
for Google directions or see the inside back of the catalog). The time
and date is 11:30 on Friday, October
20, just three weeks from today.
The celebration is
an occasion to honor current members who
joined LRI during its critical first three years, 1991, 1992 and 1993
... and it's an occasion for all of us, current members and new members
alike, to enjoy each other's company and be entertained and delighted
in the process.
Mark your calendar and sign up by tearing off
the bottom of the flyer and submitting or mailing it to the office with
your check for the modest $10 cost of the luncheon buffet. You may
print this
online pdf flyer or take a flyer available in classrooms or in the
Tallwood Social Room.
OLLI has not had a big party in some time.
Don't miss this wonderful social occasion! |
FROM
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
An update
 By Dick Chobot, Executive Director
OLLI
MISCELLANY--
Fall for the Book. The series
started last Wednesday, the 27th. In addition to the three Special
Events in the OLLI catalog, we have
added a fourth OLLI-sponsored
presentation: this coming Sunday, October 1, at 4:30 in TA-1, you
can hear Jon Peede, counselor to the chairman of the National Endowment
for the Arts, discuss Operation
Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience.
Jon was the manager
for the project, which yielded this anthology containing works written
by military veterans and active duty personnel serving in Iraq and
Afghanistan, and their families. |
Jamestown. Hold the dates of November 15-16 for an
overnight trip to Jamestown and Yorktown, led by Ranger Jennifer
Epstein and a National Park Service colleague. The bus will leave the
afternoon of November 15. We will stay in a motel in the Williamsburg
area and tour Jamestown and Yorktown on the 16th with lunch thrown in.
Final costs are being determined.
For now, I need to get a count on how
many of you might be interested in going on the trip (we have a
57-passenger bus reserved). An "I'm interested" sign-up sheet will be
available in the social room. Individuals enrolled in the Jamestown
course (302) will be given a one-week advance registration option,
after which the trip will be open to all OLLI members.
If the trip is a
success, other overnight tours will be offered on a regular basis. I am
grateful to Jennifer Epstein for arranging the on-site tours. She will
be accompanying the participants on the trip. |
Fight the Flu. A flu shot clinic is
scheduled for Tallwood from 1:00 to 4:00 on Friday, October 6. A
sign-up sheet is in the office.
The cost is $25. Payment is by cash or
check. If you are enrolled in Medicare Part B you can receive the shot
for free, but you must bring your card. If you are enrolled in a
Medicare HMO, you will have to pay for the shot or receive it at your
HMO.
If you are allergic to chicken eggs,
thimerosal (often found in
contact lens solution) or other mercury compounds, or other vaccine
components, you should not receive the vaccine. You will not be given
the vaccine if you have a past history of Guillain-Barre syndrome, or
if you are ill with a fever or active respiratory infection.
Get
your
flu shot so you won’t miss any classes! |
If
you schedule it, will they come?
In Field of Dreams, Kevin
Costner found that if he built it they did come. For some of us at
OLLI,
the same is sometime not true. We have the luxury of being able to sign
up for any number of courses. However, sometimes our intellectual eyes
are bigger than our behavioral stomach.
Each instructor receives a
class roster at the beginning of the term. If you have signed up for
class, please try to attend … or if you cannot attend the majority of
the sessions … often for any number of legitimate reasons … please
consider dropping the course. If an instructor sees a significant
disparity between the roster and attendance, he or she might disappear
into
the cornfield and not return for the next game (term).
And in classes
where there is a wait list, courtesy suggests that if you cannot
attend, you drop the class and make room for someone on the wait list.
Thank you. |

RESTON CAR POOLS
Carpools from Reston to be arranged for
three upcoming OLLI events
By Abbie Edwards, Reston Support Committee chair
THREE
VERY IMPORTANT OLLI MEETINGS happening during the fall session
will be taking place either at
Tallwood or at the Lutheran Church. I
don't want Reston members who have difficulty with transportation to
feel left out of attending these very important events. Therefore, I am
encouraging those of you who will need a ride to please contact me by
phone ( 703-476-0997) or email, and
I will work out a car pool arrangement so that so you will be able to
participate. The list of events follows:
- Fri, Oct 20,
11:30: OLLI's 15th anniversary
celebration, Christ Lutheran Church
- Fri, Nov 3,
10:00: OLLI Town Meeting, Tallwood
- Tue, Nov 14,
10:00: OLLI Special Membership Meeting on
bylaws revision, Tallwood
I have a minivan that has room for six members, and I am sure that
others in our group also have car space available. I am hoping for an
excellent turnout of our Reston contingency to attend all three events.

SPECIAL
EVENT CHANGE
Les Mis canceled; new event scheduled
 By Gordon Canyock,
Readers' Theater scribe
SPECIAL
EVENT "N" (LES MIS),
scheduled to be performed on Nov 10, has
been canceled. Instead, the OLLI Readers’ Theater Troupe will host An Afternoon of David Ives on
Friday, October 13, from 1:00-2:30 at Tallwood .
David
Ives is a contemporary American
playwright whose plays are notable for their verbal dexterity,
theatrical invention and quirky humor. He received an MFA from Yale
University's School of Drama, lives in New York and teaches at Columbia
University.
We will be performing three short comedies
selected as the funniest plays we read during the 2005-2006 season. All
OLLI members and their guests (including triskaidekaphobes) are welcome
to attend what will
be a real hoot.
MEMORIAL GIFTS TO OLLI
Consider OLLI when making a memorial gift
By Eileen Duggan, Development Committee chair
ALL OF US AT
THIS POINT IN OUR
LIVES HAVE EXPERIENCED the loss of someone near to us, and we
are often uncertain as to how best to honor their memory. Sometimes
families make suggestions – often they do not.
One of our members recently made a donation in
memory of a non-member who had passed away. The family of the
non-member received a beautiful handwritten acknowledgment of the
donation from OLLI, and the donor received a thank-you letter for his
tax-deductible contribution.
We urge you
to consider OLLI when you are
making a memorial gift. It doesn't matter whether or not the
deceased
is an OLLI member. Your gift will both honor the deceased and provide a
living memorial to his or her life.
For further information, please contact me or
Ann Hartmann in the OLLI office.
TRIP TALES NEEDED
Share your trip with others
A
FAVORITE OLLI CLASS IS TRIP TALES, where members share
recent travel experiences to places around the world. During the winter
session, we invite you to share interesting and exciting trips you have
taken.
We will be offering Trip Tales at both the
Tallwood and Lake Anne locations. Please contact Virlinda Snyder at
703-339-5748 for Tallwood, or Ann Youngren at 703-863-3588 for Lake
Anne. Better yet, present your Trip Tale at each location by contacting
Rae
Schafer (phone
703-503-3384). We look forward to hearing from you. |

About OLLI
E-News. OLLI
E-News is
OLLI's weekly newsletter; it is emailed to OLLI
members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in
session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in
classrooms, primarily for members without email. We encourage OLLI
members and
staff employees to submit news items and write articles; deadline to
the editor is 7:00 PM Wed for that week's issue. Comments,
suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI
E-News editor or the
Publications Committee chair, Gordon
Canyock.
Note
about HTML graphics. If
you do NOT see

clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged
grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things
for you. Or you could change your
email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages
like this newsletter in
three popular email systems:
- Outlook
Express.
Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all
messages in plain text."
- Yahoo

Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block

- AOL.

GMU Webmail.
If OLLI E-News is being sent
to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against using GMU Webmail
(i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read the newsletter because it
is not easy to view our newsletter as a single
integrated
document, with text and accompanying images. As you may know, you can
easily use other email systems, such
as Outlook Express or Yahoo Mail, to retrieve mail sent to external
addresses such as your gmu.edu address. An alternative is to read your
newsletter online at the OLLI Website after it is posted
each Friday.
