21ST
CENTURY COMMUNICATIONS FOR OLLI
From the executive
director
PERHAPS YOU REALIZE, AND PERHAPS YOU DON'T, but as you read this article in OLLI E-News you are taking
advantage of a truly unique vehicle for communications in the field of
lifelong learning. At OLLI-Mason, we sometimes take for granted our
outstanding communications. When I arrived here in January 2008, it was
evident that the tremendous spirit of volunteerism was responsible for
OLLI's outstanding program as well as its operations. I decided to
write an article for The
LLI
Review, the annual journal of the Osher
Lifelong Learning Institutes' National Resource Center. Volume 4, Fall 2009, is now
available online
(pdf). We also have a few hard copies available in each location.
If you borrow a copy, just remember to return it so that other members
can enjoy it.
The article that I wrote, entitled
"Twenty-first Century Communications for OLLI," is on pages 67-72, extracted
here (pdf),
and features quotes by many individuals who have been responsible for
the development of various communication vehicles over the years at
OLLI-Mason. We can all be truly proud of these accomplishments, but we
are always striving for new improvements. As I state in the conclusion
of the article, "The journey to
improve communication will continue to be both challenging and fun."

FAIRFAX CITY FALL FESTIVAL
Lots of interest in OLLI's program
 By Carole Richard, Booth Coordinator
Crowds
at the Fall
Festival in Fairfax City on a prettier day.
OLLI NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME, especially how its members
inspire others to join. Saturday, October 10, was Fairfax City Fall
Festival Day. It was a day filled with intermittent rain, high winds
and continually falling temperature. At our booth, staffed by Beverly
George, Mel Goldfarb, Sherry Hart, Manny Pablo,
Gail Sullivan and Jack
Underhill, more people signed up for catalogs—22 to be exact—than at
any
of the other booths that I have coordinated.
I had invited representatives from Mason’s
Friends of Music and Friends of the Center for the Arts to join our
table; while they had many interested visitors, I have to admit in all
modesty that OLLI stole the show. The many comments about OLLI included—
- "I have been
hearing about you from a friend."
- "Do you have
a photography group?"
- "I just
retired, and you sound like my sort of group."
- "Oh great,
you have courses on languages, history, travel, and health.”
It was so much fun to be able to point to
specific courses whenever someone asked whether our program included a
particular subject area. OLLI has it covered. Well done, resource
groups!
Heartfelt thanks go to Ernestine and Benny
Meyer who brought the tent, chairs, table and “stuff" to the site and
helped Manny and me set up ... and to Jack Underhill who helped me
dismantle things and put them in his van for returning to Tallwood.
Carole
Richard was elected to
the Board
this spring; her Board term expires June 2012. You can read
Carole's
biography at this page.
FAREWELL TO THE TOMBES
Two key OLLI volunteers are moving away
THE
EDITOR ASKED AVERETT AND JANE TOMBES, OLLI members since early
2004, to share with
their OLLI colleagues some thoughts as they prepare to move to the
'slower pace' of Richmond, Virginia. Here is Jane's letter.
Ave and I are leaving
Vienna, Virginia, at the end of this month and will move to the
Richmond area to be closer to our large family (three sons and nine
grandkids there and a daughter and two grandkids in Raleigh). I lived
in Richmond for several years before college, and we both received our
undergraduate degrees from the University of Richmond, so we know the
city well. We have already talked with the director of the University
of Richmond's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and feel that the
program there will be compatible with our interests.
After Ave retired from New Mexico State University, he and I returned
to Northern Virginia to start a consulting company. During that time, I
also became involved with the fund-raising support group for Mason’s
Great Performances series, Friends of the Center for the Arts. As a
result, Ave joined OLLI before I did.
However, Susanne Zumbro convinced me to join Readers' Theater, and
after one session, I was hooked. Having had considerable experience in
acting and directing over the years, I was delighted to know that I
could try my hand at that old game once again. In the meantime, Ave
began working with fellow scientifically minded OLLI members and
eventually took over the job of finding lecturers for the Science,
Technology and Health Resource Group. Then I agreed to help the
Literature, Language and Theater Resource Group as a co-chair.
We both will miss the Washington area and especially the OLLI program
-- one that has grown considerably since we joined. If you are new at
OLLI, you are very lucky. You will find wonderful courses and very good
friends. Ave and I know because we are very sad to leave both.
-- Jane Tombes

OLLI
PHOTOGRAPHY
CLUB
Meets Fri, Oct 23, at 9:30
Topic: Making images tack sharp
DURING THE OCTOBER MEETING OF THE
PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB (9:30
next Friday, October 23, at Tallwood), photographer John Naman will
focus on practical ways to make images tack sharp. John, a member of
the Northern Virginia Photographic Society, has
been assessing the techniques that lead to sharp, high-resolution
photos. His presentation will include printing techniques, the
relationship between contrast and resolution,
and ways shooters can customize their personal shooting techniques.
Would you like to learn a few secrets about
how to find and use the "sweet spot" on your cameras and lenses,
enabling you to create better photos? All OLLI members are welcome at
this and every meeting of the Photography Club. Attendees will
reap the benefits of John's intensive research into the techniques of
camera handling, lens control, and Photoshop editing that promote
sharper images. He will also tell us how to deal with some of the
impediments to success, ranging from motion blur to lenses that "go
soft" at the edges. Hope to see you there!

MARILYN ECKERT
Message regarding the late OLLI member
from her family
"Marilyn passed away on October 4,
2009. She was a much beloved mother, grandmother, mentor, teacher,
friend, physician and philanthropist. Her memorial service as a
celebration of her life is scheduled for St. David's Episcopal Church,
19917 Ashburn Rd., Ashburn, VA, on November 7, 2009 at 2 pm. In lieu of
flowers the family is asking that contributions be made in her honor to
St. David's Church in support of her work there for the poor of Loudoun
County, to benefit Interfaith Relief of Loudoun County.
Thank you all for your kind
thoughts, prayers, calls, visits, and cards which helped her through
her last months. We are grateful for her 83 awesome years with us and
her many contributions to her family and friends." |
