POSITIONS
OPEN FOR OLLI INVOLVEMENT
From the executive director
Above: List of key
OLLI members
involved in program planning and site coordination.
WE NEED FRESH ENERGY AND IDEAS in
every resource group and on every committee. More urgently, we are
looking for OLLI members who—
- Have an
interest in leading in the areas of Science,
Technology and Health. Because this is a very broad category,
there has been discussion of separating Health into its own category
for the purposes of program development. Ludwig Benner and Jayne Hart
have served ably as the chairpersons of the ST&H resource group,
but currently that position is vacant.
- Are willing
to coordinate efforts to address current and future needs of our
growing membership in Loudoun County. This Loudoun Coordinator would serve in a
role comparable to what Carol Henderson is doing as the Reston
Coordinator. Suzy Jampoler and Ray Beery have served in this role in
the past, but currently the position is vacant.
A complete listing of current chairpersons of
our committees and resource groups is on page iv of the catalog and on
our website's Organization
page. Some of these members focus primarily on
program offerings or activities at one of our sites, but the resource
groups are always looking for courses that can be offered at each site:
Loudoun, Reston and Fairfax.
As we so often say, OLLI is a "member-driven"
organization. It was conceived 20 years ago by energetic older adults
who wanted to develop a cooperative for providing opportunities for
continual learning. Although staff members have been involved to
facilitate administrative functions, the core activities of OLLI are
still very much conceived and implemented by a dynamic group of members.
The most compelling aspect of OLLI is its rich
group of courses. Over 50% of our courses are taught or facilitated by
our members, and members are directly responsible for contacting
qualified speakers and instructors for all courses. The Program
Committee is an umbrella group consisting of the leaders of our ten
resource groups. These leaders serve the important function of
translating the ideas and suggestions from members into actual courses
and special events. Ideally, the resource group consists of numerous
member volunteers who share the responsibility for developing a course
idea and identifying instructors.
If you are willing to help out in one of the
vacant positions, please contact me.

ANTIETAM NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD
Another successful OLLI special event bus
trip
OLLI members listen to
Park Ranger Mike Kelly at Antietam; photo by Lou Mazzatenta.
Click image above or click here to
view a 40-second slideshow of Lou's photos.
WHAT
WOULD A MIKE KELLY/FLORENCE ADLER collaboration
be without a day of sporadic downpours of rain? We have yet to find
that out, but despite the weather, 54 OLLI members deemed the tour of
the Antietam National Battlefield on Friday, October 14, a huge success.
Mike, who was recovering from a bout with a
cold and laryngitis, was up to his usual ability of keeping a
continuous description of the events of America's bloodiest day,
September 17, 1862, to and from the park, on and off the bus, standing
on the field in the downpour – we with our umbrellas held aloft, he
without any protection from the rain.
At noon, we had a buffet lunch at the Bavarian
Inn that included some of the Inn's specialties, such as sauerbraten,
red cabbage and spätzle. Refueled and sated, we reboarded the bus
to
continue the depiction of the ongoing battles, which included walks on
the sunken road and over the Burnside Bridge. A sad day in American
history but a wonderful day for us!

Hidden
Treasures
If I spent as
much time
wresting fresh words
from a thesaurus
as I do rubbing fingerprints
off a chrome coffeepot
or bent over a bathtub,
I could write poems for contests
in Richmond, Portland, Houston
and maybe, I fantasize, win
enough loot to hire a substitute.
But mindless chores open doors
on words like bedazzle, dad-blasted,
gabble, gambol, mollycoddle.
They're worth chapped hands,
cracked nails, soggy towels.
