NEW OSHER GIFT
From the president
 By Emmett Fenlon, President
I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY
to share with you some great news. The Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute at George Mason University has been given a $25,000 one-time
gift from the Osher Foundation.
Because of the current difficult economy,
Bernard and Barbro Osher have decided to give each of the 120 Osher
lifelong learning programs such a gift to enable the institutes to
maintain their present level of programs.
We are most appreciative of the generosity and
support from Mr. and Mrs. Osher.
HEAR
YE! HEAR YE! THE OLLI TOWN
HALL MEETING COMETH!
From the executive
director
AS OUR OLLI HAS GROWN to a total of almost 900 members, one of
our challenges is to listen to your questions and suggestions and use
them to guide our program and operations. If you're reading this
article, then you are already using the best tool we have for two-way
communication – the OLLI E-News.
However, for those who prefer live interaction, we will have a Town
Hall Meeting at Tallwood next Friday, November 6, from 10:00 until
approximately 11:30. Refreshments will be provided by the Hospitality
Committee following the meeting.
After welcoming remarks from President Emmett
Fenlon, I will present the draft of our budget for the fiscal year
beginning January 1, 2010. Our Board of Directors informally accepted
this draft at its September meeting but the Board's official approval
of the 2010 budget is planned for its November 20 meeting. The budget
is our way of projecting income (primarily from dues and the Osher
Foundation) and expenditures. Our 2009 budget consisted of income and
expenditures of approximately $330,000 (see charts below).
The bad news is that due to the dramatic reduction in the value of our
Osher Endowment, we are expecting to receive about $15,000 less in
income from that source in 2010, with annual income in future years
dependent on the market conditions for investments. The good news is
that the Osher Foundation has announced a one-time gift of $25,000,
which we hope to receive in the near future.
The budget that is approved by our Board of
Directors will need to adequately support the expectations and needs of
OLLI members while keeping membership dues as low as possible.
I will also present a summary of the outcomes
of the OLLI "Advance" (planning retreat) which took place on October
23. Please come prepared to ask questions and make suggestions.
A day with colleagues at a scenic site
Point of View: left, a lovely place for
lunch under the
trees; right, a house full of rooms for discussions.
LAST
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, all but two of the 18 Board
members plus four past
presidents and the Program Committee chair drove to Mason's scenic site
on Mason Neck named
Point of View for the first Board retreat since January 2007.
After an introduction by Executive Director
Thom Clement and Dave
Buczek (Maria's husband, a professional facilitator providing his
services at no charge to
OLLI), we broke into small groups for four 25-minute
sessions during which we presented our ideas on ways to improve OLLI in
the pre-chosen areas of organization,
membership,
facilities, and program. Following lunch (which attendees, not OLLI,
paid
for), we met in a final two-hour session to review ideas presented
during the breakout sessions.
There was discussion about establishing one or
more ad hoc task forces to develop recommendations for the Board in
some of the areas addressed during the day. At the end of the day we
had a
three-minute Board
meeting during which we voted unanimously to re-establish the
Facilities Committee.
Thom will provide a summary
of the outcomes of the retreat at next Friday's Town Hall
Meeting.

TRIP
TO CULPEPER
Guided by Ranger Michael Kelly
 By Tom Hady, OLLI member

station in Culpeper; bottom: OLLI members in front of the Culpeper
railroad station at the beginning of the trip. Photos by the writer. |
ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, A BUSLOAD OF OLLI
MEMBERS traveled to Culpeper,
Virginia, with Ranger Michael Kelly of the National Park Service to
learn about the Civil War activity in that part of Virginia. Culpeper,
it turns out, was one of the most active locations in the
War, serving as winter quarters for one or the other army each year and
the site of a number of battles.
Our stops included the railroad depot, site of
a cavalry fight; Kelly's Ford, site of another battle; the Graffiti
House at Brandy Station; and a number of other sites. With the
combination of Michael Kelly's detailed knowledge and interesting
descriptions and Special Events Resource Group Chair Florence Adler's
attention to the arrangements, the participants agreed they had a good
time and learned a lot. That was despite an occasional light
rain--better weather than most of his trips, Michael pointed out!
