BOARD APPROVES 2010
BUDGET WITH NO DUES INCREASE FOR FULL MEMBERS
Breaking news from today's Board meeting
AFTER
CAREFUL CONSIDERATION of
the proposed budget for 2010, the OLLI Board of Directors voted at
its meeting today (Friday, November 20) to maintain the current level of annual
dues at $350 for full members.
Executive Director Thom Clement presented a
budget proposal showing the effect of including the one-time gift of
$25,000 from Bernard and Barbro Osher, summarized as follows:
| Expected expenditures: |
$339,200 |
| Expected income: |
$326,000 |
| Funding under
expenses (without $25K gift): |
- $13,200 |
| Funding over
expenses (with $25K gift): |
+ $11,800 |
The OLLI Finance Committee had recommended
that we needed an increase in dues for the following purposes:
- To
provide a cushion in our cash reserves for the low points of the year;
- To
provide for unexpected contingencies (e.g., rental of space due to
emergency relocation); and
- To
prepare for expansion of OLLI's program and facility requirements.
NO CHANGE IN WINTER
SCHEDULE
From the executive director
AFTER
CAREFULLY CONSIDERING THE PROS AND
CONS of
the 15-minute change in our mid-day time slot for Fairfax and Reston,
we have decided to continue the revised schedule for the winter term.
In our recent survey of members, 56% of the 147 respondents said that
the new schedule has either been beneficial or has not made any
difference for them. Additionally, since the schedule for the winter
term is already finalized, it would be disruptive to make any type of
change at this time.
To summarize the responses from the survey,
the most frequent
reasons given for keeping the revised schedule (11:45 to 1:15) were:
- The extra 15 minutes between sessions
allows for easier transition both in the classrooms and in the parking
lot at Tallwood.
- The
extra 15 minutes allows for more relaxed time between the morning and
mid-day session, with more time for casual interaction.
- The
extra 15 minutes allows just enough time to safely travel between a
morning class at Tallwood (or Reston) to the other campus.
The most frequent reasons given for wanting to go back to the previous
schedule (11:30 to 1:00) were:
- Not enough time to go home or to a
restaurant for lunch between the mid-day and afternoon sessions
- Too much "down" time (wasted time)
between the morning and mid-day sessions.
We will continue to look for "win-win" options for adjustments to the
schedule beginning with the spring 2010 term. At that time, the program
in Loudoun will move to the same daily schedule as the Fairfax and
Loudoun campuses, which will provide more slots for classes.

Topic on Wed, Dec 2: Review of two books
on Vietnam War
 THE
OLLI HISTORY CLUB WILL MEET on Wed, Dec 2, at Tallwood from
10:00 to 11:30. At this meeting, we're pleased that OLLI's Dr. Jim
Hubbard will review David Kaiser's American
Tragedy: Kennedy, Johnson and Origins of the Vietnam War and
Gareth Porter's Perils of Dominance:
Influence of Power and the Road to War in Vietnam.
Kaiser lays our involvement to the Eisenhower
policies that were embedded in the State and Defense Departments;
Porter argues that our decisive military superiority led to our
involvement. Jim will examine these two perspectives as to how we
became involved in that long, agonizing war.
OLLI members and guests are always welcome at
any of the club's meetings. Bring a friend.

the Library of Congress on Friday, November 13th. The "Map Ladies" in
the background are made completely out of map sheets. Ed Redmond (first
row, left) gave us an extensive tour of his Division, which included
going into the special collections vault. The group concluded the tour
at the "Exploring the Americas" exhibit and saw the only known copy of
the 1507 Martin Waldseemuller map, which is the first to identify the
new continent as "America."

ABOUT 25 OLLI MEMBERS FROM THE SINGING
FOR FUN CLASS spent their last class of
the fall semester (Thursday, November 12), serenading residents of The
Virginian Continuing Care Retirement Community. Songs by Irving Berlin
along with some holiday songs were on the program. Last spring the
group did the same at another retirement community. The sense of
satisfaction of the singers was only matched by the smiles on the
residents' faces.
For many terms the singers have been led
by Linda George and accompanied by Delores Ecklund. Come hear them
perform at the OLLI Holiday Party on Friday, December 4.

EYE ON RESTON
Staff member Ann Youngren leaving
 By Sharon Gilman, OLLI
E-News Staff Writer
OLLI
MEMBERS ATTENDING CLASSES IN RESTON have grown
accustomed to the warm welcome and bright smile of Ann Youngren, the
tall, fashionable site assistant at Lake Anne since October, 2005. Ann
will be leaving her post at the end of this term, but we expect to see
her as a member of OLLI in the future. Ann has been the amazingly
helpful, reliable, and agile assistant in the special circumstances of
church rental space where classroom furniture and equipment must be set
up, taken down and stored away every day. We will miss her unfailingly
cheerful provision of everything from tables and chairs to cookies and
coffee and increasingly sophisticated computer and audiovisual
equipment. We thank her for her service, treasure her friendship, and
look forward to her participation as she joins husband Ralph as an
active OLLI member.
