BOARD HIGHLIGHTS
Board of Directors meeting on Nov 16
By Susanne Zumbro, Secretary
THE REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING OF THE OLLI BOARD OF DIRECTORS was held at Tallwood on Fri, Nov 16, at 10:00.
At the recommendation of President Pat Carroll, Al Roe was nominated and approved to fill the seat on the Board that had been vacated as a result of the resignation of Ed Mentz. The following committee chair appointments were announced: Audiovisual Support--Paul Howard; Development--John Woods; and Planning--Valerie Braybrooke.
John Woods, Chair of the Development Committee, reported that he had met with members of the Mason Development Office. The purpose of the meeting was to ascertain how Mason could help OLLI with a development plan and support fund-raising activities channeling money through the Foundation. The George Mason University Foundation would charge a 3% processing fee.
A resolution was introduced by Paul Howard with the purpose of trying to get as much information stored electronically as possible. The following resolution was passed-- Resolved: OLLI Board meeting minutes, committee reports, financial data, executive director’s report, and other information normally presented to the Board shall be stored in electronic form on the OLLI server for ongoing reference and archival purposes, to begin as soon as reasonable. (Executive Session minutes, and personnel issue information, and other material of a sensitive nature shall be retained by the Secretary in "Board Only" files.)
Treasurer Gordon Canyock introduced the following resolution, which was passed by the Board-- Resolved: The OLLI Board of Directors approves the proposed FY2008 Budget as presented by the Finance Committee.

Executive Director Dick Chobot reported on the Loudoun program. He recommended that the Board approve continuation of the Loudoun program through 2008. Questions were raised about integrating the Loudoun catalog into the existing OLLI catalog. Gordon requested that the Finance Committee be given the opportunity to review the Loudoun budget. The question was raised as to what the parameters would be in a year when we will need to decide whether to continue or not; it was suggested that an ad hoc committee be appointed to come up with measurable criteria for evaluating the Loudoun program.
Dick introduced the following two resolutions, which were both passed by the Board--
Resolved: The OLLI Board of Directors authorizes the Loudoun program to continue through 2008.
Resolved: The OLLI Board of Directors authorizes an additional $1,000 to cover the expenses of the Loudoun administrator (currently Madeline Lynn).

Under "New Business," Vice President Ben Gold reported on two issues that were raised during the 2007 Town Meeting--
There was a suggestion made to place a box next to the coffee and cookies for people to make donations. It was the sense of the Board that this was not a good idea.
The issue of changing the class hours was raised. Our members have been surveyed on this issue several times and the results have always come back that the majority of the members are not in favor of a change. It was suggested that it might be time to look at this again. Bruce Reinhart responded that the Program Review Committee will consider repeating the survey and report back to the Board in January.
The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for Fri, Dec 14, 10:00 at Tallwood. All OLLI members are welcome to attend.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE WINTER PROGRAM
Highlighting a few of the wonderful courses
By Kathryn Russell, Program Committee chair
MOST OF US ARE NOW KNEE-DEEP in those seasonal catalogs that just keep coming. There is an important one, however, that you’ll want to save from the deep, dark depths of the recycle bin. OLLI's impressive winter catalog is on its way and should begin appearing in mailboxes next week. Under the attractive winter cover you’ll find more than 60 courses and special events.
In the Art/Music section, have a look at the intriguing "Presidential Campaigns in Song and Story," and learn the secrets of precious stones in "The Lure and Lore of Gems." Economics/ Finance section offers helpful and practical courses on personal finance and estate planning. The #204 course, which includes a session with Linda de Marlor, will answer all your questions about taxes.
A leisurely stroll through the ever-popular 300s and 700s will reveal a number of History, International Studies, and Current Events courses to strike your fancy. "Famous Trials" will appear at both Tallwood and Lake Anne. In addition to learning more about the Arab world and Africa, you can explore the Reston’s community in #309, "Past, Present and Future." Then move on to the 400s to find fascinating or challenging reading for winter days—from Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra to medieval tales of Sir Gawain. Mason's Prof. Amelia Rutledge will share with us Arthurian legends, and Diane Coppage, also of Mason, brings us the works of Margaret Atwood. Or practice your reading skills in the "Deep Hidden Meaning" study group.
The last three subject areas offer a true smorgasbord. In Religion/ Philosophy/ Ethics, sample such diverse topics as eastern and western religion, as well as "Ethical Conflicts." Prof. Stephen Ruth returns to OLLI with his course "Kings and Prophets," at Lake Anne. Science/Technology offers to teach us all we need to know about nanotechnology as well as "The Wisdom of the Human Body." Mason’s Prof. Larry Rockwood will offer a course on the importance of tropical ecosystems. Finally, don’t miss the eclectic "Other" category and the wide range of Special Events and Ongoing Activities that follow.
Since we're able to highlight only a few of the wonderful courses, we hope you'll spend some time reading about all of them. So pour a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy your tour through the new catalog. Or, if you prefer, read all about the winter session now online. Making our course choices will, as always, be the greatest challenge.

TEN DAYS UNTIL WINTER TERM REGISTRATION
How to secure a User Account
By Dick Chobot, Executive Director
HARD TO BELIEVE, ISN'T IT?! We hope that more of you will use the OLLI Online Registration System to plan your schedule and register for the winter term. Do you have a User Account for the system? More than 400 OLLI members already have a User Account … don’t be left out!
In this and a forthcoming article we will be refreshing your knowledge of the features of the system and how to use it most effectively. We suggest that you print these articles and save them for use when registration opens on Mon, Dec 10. Our goal is to significantly increase the one-third of members who registered and paid online during the fall term.

The first thing you need to do as you prepare for online registration is secure a User Account. You can create an account at any time. Here is how in three easy steps:

1. Go to www.olliatgmu.org (see screen shot above).
2. Click the link "Get a new User Account if you are an OLLI member." If you are a new member or a lapsed member you first need to click on "Join OLLI."
3. Complete the sign-up form (the username might typically be your first initial and last name, as in jsmith, and is not case sensitive).

The password must be at least six characters, all alpha or alpha numeric, and the password is case sensitive.
You will be asked to create a security question and its answer, such as "cat's name?" and "tabby" (used to verify your identity if you lose or forget your password).
An on-screen message will inform you that the account has been created. There are "Forgot User Name?" and "Forgot Your Password?" links on the log-in page. If you forget your username, you can retrieve it via email on the log-in page by providing your first and last name and email address. If you forget your password, you can retrieve it via email on the log-in page by providing your username and answering the security question (note: the password itself is encrypted, and OLLI does not have access to it).
Final point: When the system asks you for your name, it must be entered as it appears in the OLLI database. You can check the Member Directory. For example, if I were in the database as Dick Chobot, the system will reject an entry of Richard Chobot, Richard B. Chobot, Rich Chobot, etc.

CONCERNING THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Reception for Dick Chobot; Search for ED continues

MEMBERS AND FRIENDS are invited to join in a reception for Dick Chobot on Wed, Dec 12, from 12:30 to 2:30 at Tallwood.
We know members will appreciate this opportunity to wish the OLLI executive director well and to thank him for his many contributions to our institute. Those who enjoy holiday baking are invited to share a sampling of their kitchen delights.
-- Contributed by Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee chair
THE JOB ANNOUNCEMENT to recruit a full-time executive director for OLLI is posted at www.olli.gmu.edu/edjob.htm.
If you know of potential candidates, please urge them to check the announcement and consider applying. Any interested candidate should apply quickly, as the ED Search Committee is moving into its final stages.

FRIENDS OF OLLI STEWARDSHIP REPORT FOR 2007
Thank you for your support
By Dick Chobot, Executive Director
SUPPORT FOR FRIENDS OF OLLI IN 2007 has meant a great deal to the program and its ability to serve over 750 members this year. Dues revenue covers operating costs. Donations to the Friends of OLLI provide the wherewithal to cover certain capital costs and enhancements that would not be affordable without your generous support. Note that the Board of Directors must approve all expenditures from Friends of OLLI funds.
Here is a summary of our Friends of OLLI account for this year:

     BEGINNING BALANCE (1/1/07): $36,978
     DONATIONS (THRU 11/30/07): $8,523
     CAPITAL EXPENDITURES FOR 2007: $29,712
          Defibrillators (2): $5,000
          Reupholstering Chairs: $5,503
          Registration System: $8,500
          Classroom Headset Microphones: $1,709
          Scholarships to George Mason: $8,000
Sponsorship of Fall for the Book: $1,000
     BALANCE (11/30/07): $15,789

Donations include both direct contributions and donations on behalf of OLLI to the GMU Foundation. More on how to donate through the Foundation can be found in John Woods's separate article below in this issue.
It also should be noted that the Registration System and Database Upgrade were to have cost $20,000. The cost was reduced to $15,000 when the OLLI at American University decided to procure the same system. Funds budgeted for 2007 covered $6,500 of the cost of the system.
Finally, at the December Board meeting I will bring a proposal to the Board to fund the upgrading of the telephone system in the Tallwood office. This will cost under $4,000 and will increase staff efficiency by allowing each staff member a separate line.
As you can see, your generosity has greatly benefited OLLI and its members. For 2008, our principal need is to build a fund for replacement of audiovisual equipment and classroom laptops at Tallwood and Reston. We also will continue to award the scholarships to George Mason in appreciation for the University’s support of OLLI.
We encourage you to respond generously to our 2007 annual campaign and to favorably consider the alternative strategies for supporting the Institute that will be presented to you by the Development Committee. Thank you for your support.

A GIFT TO OLLI IN THE PRESENT BUILDS A STRONGER OLLI FUTURE!

SAVE ON YOUR TAXES BY HELPING OLLI
Make a tax-free IRA charitable rollover to OLLI
By John Woods, Development Committee chair
AS SOME OF YOU KNOW, after reaching 70½ you are required to take Minimum Required Distributions (MRDs) from your IRAs. In most cases, the amount withdrawn is fully taxable to you. If you don’t need the entire MRD we have a suggestion for you. You can direct your broker to transfer some of your MRD through the GMU Foundation to OLLI. And you will not have to pay any tax on the amount transferred.
As you may know, our Friends of OLLI fund is at a very low level, and there is an urgent need for funds to replace audiovisual equipment, finish paying for our Web-based registration system, purchase a new phone system, meet our obligations for the Mason scholarships, and to begin to build up a reserve for future enhancements to our program and facilities.
At the current time this tax-free IRA charitable rollover is set to expire Dec 31, 2007. Therefore, if you want to make such a contribution it has to be done before the end of this year. To qualify for this type of contribution:

The donor must be 70½ years or older.
The process must be completed on or before Dec 31, 2007.
Gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per taxpayer.
Gifts must be directly from your IRA or Rollover IRA – cannot be from donor advised funds, supporting organizations, private foundations or life-income gifts.

In order for your gift to benefit OLLI, you must transfer the payout directly to George Mason University Foundation specifying that the gift is for OLLI.
If you are interested in making this type of contribution to OLLI and want more information, please contact Una Murphy at the Mason Development Office (703-993-8621). You may also check out the Planned Giving Guide on the University’s Website: http://supportingmason.gmu.edu/waystogive/deferred.html.
Please inform Karen Nash or me that this is being done so we can make sure the money is put into our Friends of OLLI account and that you receive credit for the contribution. This is a win-win situation – you save taxes and help OLLI at the same time.
Of course, before you do anything, you may want to check with your tax adviser to make sure this action is appropriate for your circumstances.

COOKIE MONSTER
A suggestion from the treasurer
By Gordon Canyock, Treasurer
EXTRACT FROM THE MINUTES OF THE BOARD of Directors meeting on Nov 16: There was a suggestion made at the recent Town Meeting to place a box next to the coffee and cookies for people to make donations. It was the sense of the Board that this was not a good idea.
I argued against the idea not because I don't eat cookies, but rather because I felt it would prove to be an accounting nightmare and would cost us more in staff salary than the cookies were worth. We have spent about $5,500 so far this year for Social Room Supplies, which includes coffee, tea, sundries, cookies and other nibbles. With increased membership, we are budgeting $6,500 for 2008. That makes it one of the largest line items in the budget.
So, let me make a suggestion: Those of you who would like to contribute to the cause, donate a fresh box of your own favorite cookies, crackers, or pretzels for the benefit of all, rather than donating a couple dollars into a kitty. If you decide to do that, please place your donation in the box next to the refrigerator in the social room, not on the coffee table.

DEC 7: FIRST FRIDAYS AT OLD TOWN HALL
A holiday blend of theater and music in Fairfax City

ON FRI, DEC 7, AT 7:30, Theater of the First Amendment and the George Mason Jazz Ensemble join forces to bring to the City of Fairfax a holiday blend of theater and music.
As part of TFA’s First Friday series at the Old Town Hall (photo at left), the evening will feature holiday noir stories, read by TFA’s Kevin Murray, Mary Lechter and friends, intermingled with Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, as arranged by Duke Ellington and interpreted by the 18-piece Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Jim Carroll.
Billed as TFA’s holiday gift to the community, the event is free and open to the public, and is followed by a holiday reception.
TFA and Jim Carroll’s Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra will join forces again in the June 2008 Mason Festival of the Arts on the campus of GMU. Visit http://www.gmu.edu/cfa/tfa/festival.html for more details.

PROFILE
Elizabeth Crawford -- Hooked on Words
By Valerie Braybrooke, Board member
ELIZABETH CRAWFORD HAS BEEN WRITING so many profiles of OLLI members for our OLLI E-News that she has avoided being the subject of one. With her pen still, we discovered that she had spent much of her life in and around New York pursuing academics as a student and a teacher.
A native of Queens, New York, she received a B.A. from the College of New Rochelle followed immediately by earning an M.A. from Columbia University and eventually a Ph.D. from the University of Buffalo.
Elizabeth’s first teaching job was at Canisius College in Buffalo. After marrying Christopher, she took six years off to have children during which time they moved downstate to Westchester. Elizabeth went back to her alma mater to teach part-time and then to Manhattanville College. The challenge of teaching expository writing and research methods to freshmen who were more inclined to write about their feelings was balanced by the joy of watching their horizons expand. Her success was recognized and rewarded by being appointed Director of Writing for her last five years at Manhattanville before retiring.
Teaching is in Elizabeth’s genes: her mother was a teacher as are two of her sons, and a third son is a school counselor. When she and Christopher retired, they moved to Virginia to be involved with their grandchildren’s lives. In the fall of 2003 Elizabeth joined LRI remarking "I had found my kind of people." She eased into sharing her writing skills by contributing announcements, then articles and, lately, profiles of our members ... all of which have added to the quality of almost every issue of OLLI E-News.

The Pirates of Penzance
Virginia Opera presents a lively traditional Gilbert and Sullivan staging of this clever comedy which premiered in 1879. The story line turns on the hard-of hearing nursemaid of the orphan Frederick.      You could forward the newsletter to your alternate Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail or Hotmail and read it there ... or read it online at the OLLI Website each Friday.
Perhaps the easiest solution for those of you with GMU email accounts is to configure your desktop email system such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Windows Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve mail sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these instructions.
