OLLI
AND YOUR BRAIN
From the executive director
IF YOU ARE SCIENTIFICALLY INCLINED, you
will probably enjoy reading the article "Education, the brain and
dementia: neuroprotection or compensation?" by Dr. Hannah Keage,
recently published in Brain: A
Journal of Neurology. Researchers tested the hypothesis that
greater education reduces dementia in older adults. This study examined
brains donated by 872 individuals. Although it is extremely difficult
to confirm cause-and-effect relationships, the study concluded that
people with higher levels of education both in youth and in older age
had healthier brains.
To add a touch of humor, I'd like to point out
that one variable that was measured in this study was brain weight.
People with more education had heavier brains. Perhaps that explains
your trouble losing weight?
Some of you may have joined OLLI to reduce the
impact of dementia on your brain. However, I suspect that most of you
were attracted to OLLI and have stayed involved because it's fun to
continue the journey of learning with people who share your passions.
It's nice to know that science supports your OLLI membership!

The Nov 18 Board of Directors meeting
THE
OLLI BOARD OF DIRECTORS met
Friday, November 18 at Tallwood. In his written report to the Board,
Executive Director Thom Clement noted that the architectural and
engineering firm with which OLLI has contracted is working on the
second draft of OLLI facility needs, based on interviews with OLLI reps
and analysis of our registration data. We are emphasizing our interest
in facilities that could be used not only by OLLI but also by the
University during afternoons and evenings. (The hope is that the
University might help fund facility improvements.) The firm's final
report is expected to include options for improvements to Tallwood as
well as plans for new facilities on a different site.
Board
members discussed the treasurer's resolution for a $10 dues increase to
$360 annually, beginning with the spring 2012 term. By a 13-to-3 vote, the Board approved the dues increase –
the first increase in five years, since spring 2007.
The Board then voted unanimously to approve
the budget prepared by the executive director and recommended by the
Finance Committee. The budget's projected 2012 expenditures total
$405,000 (7.3 percent above the 2011 level) – including money for
reprogramming the registration system, setting aside money for capital
expenditures, and less than 3 percent increase in payroll expenses (the
single largest budget category, at $217,000). Other major categories
are general/administrative ($72,000), facilities ($42,000) and
equipment ($30,000). Based on the membership growth assumption of 1,026
members by the end of 2012, there should be a small budget surplus for
2012; without the dues increase, a deficit would have been expected.
The next meeting of the Board will be at 10:00
on Friday, January 20, 2012 at Tallwood. All
OLLI members are invited to attend.

PROGRAM CORNER
Preview of winter courses

By Kathryn Russell,
Program Committee Chair
JUST AS THE COLD, GRAY DAYS ARRIVE, you
have some relief arriving soon in your mailbox: The OLLI winter
catalog. Or, if you just can't wait, check out the fabulous new lineup
of courses on our website ( click
catalog image at right). Our great program planners from all
three sites have assembled an amazing collection of courses in every
subject area.
Look for offerings by several Mason
professors, as well as instructors from outside OLLI. Here are just a
few examples:
- "Beyond the
Borderlands" (F653)
by Prof. Debra Shutika
- "Technology,
Culture, Social Networks and the Arab Spring" (F651)
by Prof. Stephen Ruth
- "Music
Series"
(L106),
performances featuring Monika Chamasyan on violin and Marina Chamasyan
on piano
- "Religions of
Asia" (F601)
by Prof. Cuong Tu Nguyen and Prof. Young-chan Ro
- "Biographies:
Lives in Science" (R804),
a multi-instructor course
This is definitely the time to spend some cold
winter days reading a good book. You'll find many opportunities here:
- "A Modern
Classic ― Howard's End" (F402)
- "From
Literature to Film: James Joyce and John Huston" (R408)
- "Evelyn Waugh
— Brideshead Revisited" (R410)
- "Strictly
Sonnets" (L415)
- "Dystopian
Literature: The Giver and The Hunger Games" (F405)
If you're looking for some courses featuring
needful information, you'll find some fascinating titles such as
"Lifestyle Changes Facing Seniors" ( F201),
"I'm Retired, Inadequate or No Pension. What Now?" ( F202),
and "Family Systems and Seniors" ( R803).
And don't miss "Comfort Foods" ( F901)
to warm body and soul.
I hope I've offered enough tidbits to whet
your appetite for this exciting winter term. As usual, making choices
will be difficult, and just when you think you've finished, you'll have
to think about Special Events and ongoing activities—a subject for next
week.

HELP WANTED

Coordinator(s) for multi-speaker courses
ONE OF THE MOST
POPULAR COURSES at OLLI for the last several years has been
"America and the World," a series of lectures by well-respected
speakers on topics related to American politics, economics, and foreign
policy in the context of current world affairs. OLLI member Carlyn Elder
has done a great job identifying and arranging for speakers from
various think tanks and associations in the Washington area as well as
George Mason University. It is very challenging to organize a
multi-speaker course like this due to the popularity and busy schedules
of the speakers. However, the end result has proved to be a win-win
situation: the speakers enjoy sharing their expertise and perspectives
with an educated and interested audience, and OLLI members benefit from
some of the best thinkers on a wide range of important topics.
OLLI needs one or more members who are
willing to help organize this type of course for future terms.
Ideally, a team of people could work together to brainstorm topics,
identify potential speakers, and persistently follow up on contact
information.
If you have an interest in working on future courses such as "America
and the World," please contact Kathryn Russell, chair of
the OLLI Program Committee.

Wed, Dec 7 – Barbed wire
THE OLLI HISTORY CLUB
will meet at Tallwood on Wednesday, December 7 at 10:00. OLLI member
and frequent presenter Bill Reader will give a presentation on "Barbed
Wire." Bill, noted for his sharp
and wry sense of humor, will make several points about the impact of this
invention on society. Agriculture and warfare are two that come to mind.

PHOTOGRAPHY
CLUB
Fri, Dec 9 – Photography as a retirement
hobby
ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9 the
OLLI Photography Club will hold its monthly meeting at 9:30 in TA-1.
Our speaker will be OLLI member Dan Feighery ( photo at right). Dan will be
discussing, in part, general topics such as what makes photography
unique – as opposed to giving a "How to do it"-type presentation. As
always with Dan's presentations, you will find this meeting very
informative.
You do not have to be a member of the
Photography Club to attend; all OLLI members are invited.

Sat, Dec 10 – Free software; Ubuntu; PC
clinic
OLLI'S
COMPUTER CLUB (the OLLI
Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet on Saturday, December
10. Join us at 12:30 for soft drinks and socializing in the Tallwood
social room. Presentations will begin at 1:00 in TA-1. This month's
offerings will include the following.
- Free & Alternative Software. In
his webinar presentation, John Kennedy will share the many free
programs he uses or recommends that take the place of popular "paid"
programs. His motto is "Try it, you might like it – especially the
price!" And if his free software doesn't meet your needs, then he
guesses you'll just have to pay the piper! John Kennedy lives in Ohio;
a retired teacher, he taught computer skills to middle school students
and now teaches computers to senior citizens.
- "Learn 30" – Ubuntu Operating System.
Geof Goodrum, president of the Washington Area Computer User Group,
will demonstrate the latest version of the popular Ubuntu GNU/Linux
Operating System, including a sampling of the thousands of free
software titles available, how to customize the system as you like it,
and how to maintain your system. Geof will also review options for
running GNU/Linux operating systems along with a Microsoft operating
system on the same computer, though you may find little reason to run
another operating system after using GNU/Linux!
- PC Clinic. This meeting will include
our PC Clinic, held in the social room annex, where we try to help
members of WACUG and OPCUG with their particular hardware and software
problems. You must contact us in advance to discuss your computer's
symptoms or advise us what hardware or software you'd like help
installing or troubleshooting.
See full
details on this meeting and requirements for the PC Clinic by clicking here.

Warning
When I am an old woman
I'll wheel around the mall and nick peoples ankles
I'll wear yellow to attract the attention of hummingbirds and paramedics
I'll drink champagne for breakfast and never floss my teeth
I'll eat bell peppers and pancakes, cream puffs and carrot sticks
I'll chew Dentyne that's been in the bottom of my purse too long
I'll wear clothes that don't fit me and smell bad from cheese stains
I'll lift my skirts and show off my varicose veins
I'll give away candy to strangers
And make up for being so damn nice in my youth
But maybe I won't get the chance to be really old and cranky
Maybe I should just start now and let
Everyone get used to it
