THE GIFT OF TIME
From the executive director
By Thom Clement, Executive Director
DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, we are surrounded by the frenzy of gift giving. In our rush to finish our shopping and check off the names for everyone who absolutely must get a present, it is easy to lose perspective on the gift that means the most – our time. At OLLI, we truly enjoy the time in our retirement years when we can pursue learning at a more leisurely pace. We're not taking classes to meet a requirement for licensure, certification, or advancement. We're not learning so that we can climb higher and faster up the corporate ladder. We have the time to just enjoy the learning experience. We also have the time to enjoy the interaction with others who share this interest. What a wonderful gift!
Of course, if you still would like to give more in tangible ways, we have numerous opportunities to give of your time as an OLLI volunteer. Serving on a committee, in a program resource group, or as an instructor can be extremely rewarding. Our volunteer leaders are always looking for new faces and fresh ideas, because OLLI continues to be a volunteer-driven organization.
And if you have a few dollars left at this time of year, you can still make a tax-deductible gift to the Friends of OLLI. The money in this fund goes to either improve our facilities or recognize support from Mason through scholarships.
Have a wonderful Holiday Season and enjoy the gift of time with your loved ones!

WINTER-TERM REGISTRATION
Registration continues through Jan 6; online registration encouraged

Registering online is easy.
ALTHOUGH OLLI WILL BE CLOSED during the next two weeks, registration for the winter term continues both online and via mail. Registering early during the period gives you no advantage in terms of getting the courses you want, but don't put it off; the registration period ends on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.
We encourage you to register online. More and more members are discovering how easy it is to register online and to pay any applicable membership dues and course fees with a credit card. Visit the Member Portal and try it!

ANNOUNCING A SPECIAL DONATION TO FRIENDS OF OLLI
There's still time to make a tax-deductible contribution

THE FRIENDS OF OLLI JUST RECEIVED a gift of $250 from the Washington Area Computer User Group, Inc. (WACUG or WAC). WACUG's Membership Chair Geof Goodrum said, "Since WAC's association with OLLI began in 2007, I have seen a significant increase in OLLI members joining WAC, providing benefits to both groups. I look forward to seeing this trend continue!"
The next joint meeting of the OLLI Personal Computer User Group (OPCUG) and WACUG will be on Saturday, January 16, from 12:30 to 3:30 in TA-1. The two featured presentations are--
  • A discussion about the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, held early in January in Las Vegas; and
  • "Gabe Goldberg's Favorite Web Sites," a review of Web sites that one experienced Web traveler visits often.
Check the groups' respective Web sites, OPCUG and WACUG, prior to the meeting for details.
OLLI members still have time this year to make a tax-deductible contribution to Friends of OLLI. See John Woods' recent article for more information and ideas about how to donate.

Contributed by Development Committee Chair John Woods and OPCUG Coordinator Paul Howard.

LAND GIFT TO MASON BODES WELL FOR OLLI IN LOUDOUN
Donation of 37 acres in Ashburn near Dulles Greenway

AT THE REQUEST OF THE UNIVERSITY, OLLI at Mason established a satellite program in Loudoun County in 2007. The current site is in an office building in Sterling that has been configured for classrooms, but the University has been searching for a location for a full campus to serve the burgeoning population of the outer suburbs. This includes many retirees who now live in the area.
On December 14, the University announced a gift of 37 acres near the Dulles Greenway by Van Metre Companies. We look forward to working with the Mason administration to strengthen the partnership between OLLI and the University in this new campus location. The full article announcing the land gift can be viewed at this page.

Submitted by Executive Director Thom Clement.
