THE
GIFT OF TIME
From the executive director
AS WE ENJOY THE HOLIDAY SEASON, our
thoughts are drawn to the meaning and importance of giving. I'd like to
share a few quotations on the subject of giving:
- "Blessed are those who can give without
remembering, and take without forgetting." -- Princess Elizabeth
Asquith Bibesco
- "We make a living by what we get. We make a
life by what we give." -- Winston Churchill
- "When you learn, teach. When you get, give."
-- Maya Angelou
OLLI-Mason is filled with people who give of
their talents and their time. Most of them would tell you that they
truly enjoy the act of giving – through teaching a class, leading a
club activity, serving on one of our curriculum resource groups to plan
courses, answering the phones, calling for volunteers … the list goes
on.
This brings me to share one of my favorite
quotations:
|
"Time -- the most precious gift one
can give. Each moment is unique because it will never happen again …
the gift of your time spent with others is the ultimate display of
unconditional love." -- Robert W. Merriweather |
On behalf of the staff at OLLI, I wish you a
very meaningful and relaxing Holiday Season.

LETTER TO OLLI MEMBERS
From the Mason Office of Military Services
Second from
left: Jennifer
Connors, director of Mason Office of Military Services.
Dear
Members of OLLI,
Thank you for the incredible gift of $20,000! I find it hard to express
my thanks in words. I have such a tremendous amount of respect for your
collective lifetime achievements, both personal and professional. The
financial contribution you all so generously shared will go far to
support our veteran students in achieving similar lifetime success.
The mission of our office is simple in
theory: "to assist veterans,
active duty service members, guardsmen, reservists, and dependents in
making a successful transition into the Mason community." With help
from supporters such as you, we will continue to make strides in
program
development and counseling support. This past fall we launched the
Military Alliance Program (MAP). MAP is a faculty- and
staff-development
initiative focused on creating an understanding of military
mindsets/experiences and how that translates to the campus and
classroom. We are also extremely excited about the Battles Buddies
project, which concentrates on a three-fold approach to student
support, including academic, professional and social development.
Your commitment and dedication to our
community are inspirational. Thank
you from the bottom of our hearts. Together, we will truly make a
difference in the lives of our veteran students. Please feel free to
contact me at 703-993-8243 or via email at jconnor3@gmu.edu. Best Wishes for a
Happy Holiday Season!

THE OLLI HOT
BREAKFAST SPECIAL
Coming to warm your heart and tummy

By Debbie Halverson, Culinary Coordinator
THERE'S NOTHING AS
WARMING during
the cold days of January as the presence of friends over a cup of
coffee and a warm breakfast.
Just when members might feel a need to see
their OLLI buddies during a seemingly unending winter break, we have a
solution for that: the OLLI Hot
Breakfast Special. On Tuesday, January 10 from 10:00 until 11:30
in TA-1, members can enjoy a breakfast of sausage and bacon, baked
eggs, grits, hot rolls and fruit in an informal atmosphere. Nothing
fancy – just an opportunity to visit and enjoy an outpouring from the
OLLI kitchen. If interested, RSVP to me, and I'll put your name on the
list ($5.00 at the door to
cover cost of food). I hope I'll see you there because by then I'll be
missing you too.

First
Big Christmas
Billowy snow poured from a slate sky
An icy wind snapped the breeze from the northwest
Time so, so slowly slipped by
As I was fixed on my present request
My four year old mind was entirely focused
On the one gift I asked Santa for
The one large present
Just one and nothing more
I woke up early on Christmas morning
Thinking of my cherished prize
Awake long before the dawning
I rushed to the Christmas tree with a sigh
There all laid out under the branches
Was the large Army set I so desired
With just one request I took my chances
I was so happy I cried
