SPECIAL "MOCK ELECTION"
...To test online voting
By Thom Clement, Executive Director
I AM ENCOURAGING ALL OLLI MEMBERS to participate in a special "mock election" using a new online voting feature of our registration system. Each year, one-third of our Board of Directors positions are up for election. Although we will continue with a paper ballot and mail option, we hope that most OLLI members will take advantage of a convenient voting feature that is being added to the Member Portal. This will greatly reduce mailing costs and volunteer labor. The system is designed to ensure that only members can vote, and that they can vote only once.

The election is titled: TEST -- OLLI ELECTION -- TEST. In order to participate, you have two options:
  1. Click on this direct link -- www.olliatgmu.edu/polls -- and after logging in, follow the directions for voting for up to six of the fictitious nominees.
  2. Log on to the OLLI Member Portal and select the "Membership" pull-down menu; click on "Vote" and follow the directions.
We will also be sending all members an email with this same invitation to participate in the mock election. Later in February, we'll let you know the results!

LIFE ISN'T FAIR
Reflections on growing old

Despite 'life not being fair,' Barb remains active; she's pictured here on Bike to Mason Day in 2008. --Ed.

By Barbara Kyriakakis, OLLI E-News Associate Editor
OLD AGE COMES AT A BAD TIME. I no longer have to change diapers, wipe runny noses, pick peas up off the kitchen floor, or lift 25-pound toddlers into their car seats. I am no longer tied to a schedule of carpooling, doctors' appointments, teachers' meetings and soccer games. I am free! I said FREE! YES, I AM FREE! I can now do the things I've always wanted to do: learn to dance, take a class at the local university, and play bridge again.
"Turn my feet which way?" I moaned.
"Pull my leg up how high?" I asked.
"Bend and touch my whats? I haven't seen those in 10 years!" I said.
Let's can the dance class. How about an English class at George Mason University?
"Seven-thirty A.M.? Too early," I whined. "I need my beauty sleep. Eleven a.m. would be nice." Class and section closed.
"How about two p.m.?"” I thought out loud. Class and section closed.
"Aha! A 7:20 p.m. creative writing class that has a spot open."
"It’s over when?" I asked. "Ten P.M.? That's past my bedtime."
Let's see … bridge. Okay, let's take a shot at it.
"How much are aces worth? Would you repeat what 'trump' means? What's a dummy again? I can't remember anything anymore."
Yep, old age comes at a bad time. Just when I'm ready to enjoy life, I have to carry senior citizen baggage: arthritic bones, worn-out body, and a bad memory. Life just isn't fair.

Note. We are looking for human-interest articles like this -- stories by and about OLLI members, their unique experiences or achievements, doing things together, etc. Any member can submit an article (250 words limit); if published, you'll have a byline and photo to show to your family! -- Rod Zumbro, OLLI E-News Editor

A VALENTINE
...For all OLLI Sweethearts
By Debbie Halverson, Membership Committee Chair

NOTHING BEARS REPEATING MORE THAN a successful party, and as last year's Valentine party was just that, you can mark your schedule for the OLLI 2010 Valentine Party on Friday, February 19, at 1:00 at Tallwood. Every OLLI member from Tallwood, Reston and Loudoun is warmly invited to attend.
Once again we will have ice cream and toppings, along with fresh fruit and other sweets, a variety show and a photographer's corner. We understand that "Kisses the Klown" will drop in to spread the sweets.
We need to know how many will attend, so do RSVP to the office (by Friday, February 12) to get on the list. Also, consider sharing your performance skills with us in the variety show; please let Manny Pablo know what kind of act to expect from you, and we'll put you on the program. We take anything but dog acts. (Well, maybe dogs, but no pigs.)
     Come, share the love!

OPPORTUNITY TO PUT YOUR ARTISTIC SKILLS TO WORK
Fall for the Book poster
THE FALL FOR THE BOOK FESTIVAL is hosting a poster contest to advertise its fall 2010 program; a $500 prize will be awarded. The grand-prize-winning poster will be a cornerstone of the upcoming festival's annual marketing campaign. All submissions must be postmarked by March 15, 2010.
The festival planners seek a full-color poster that celebrates the interaction between readers and writers, and calls people's attention to the festival's September dates. The poster will be printed in the spring and distributed throughout the capital region. Entries will be judged by the festival staff. Entries should appear in the same form as the final artwork; electronic files will be necessary for reproduction of the winning poster.
Click here for detailed guidelines; you can also call Program Manager Ruth Goodwin at 703-993-3986 or contact OLLI member Paulette Lichtman-Panzer to learn more about the contest.

Note: On the Fall for the Book home page, you'll see George Mason University and OLLI listed as sponsors.

BOOK CLUB
Meets Wed, Feb 10, to discuss The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
THE TALLWOOD BOOK CLUB WILL MEET on Wednesday, February 10, at Tallwood at 1:45. The book for discussion is The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson. It is the story of the World's Columbia Exposition (Chicago World's Fair of 1893) and the many famous figures of the Gilded Age involved. Read synopsis, reviews and an excerpt at this page.
     All OLLI members are invited.

POET'S CORNER
Selected by the OLLI Poetry Workshop
IN THIS NEW DEPARTMENT, we feature short poems selected by members of the OLLI Poetry Workshop, coordinated by Mike McNamara and Jan Bohall.

Here's To Our Poetry Workshop

Unfettered by the need for academic credit,
We meet every Tuesday
to mete the meat of inspiration.
Some might say it’s merely exhibitionism.
But those who occupy regular seats around the table
know better.
We know the process of putting our best on paper,
and deleting,
because best turned out to be…well…
something less.
We know about starting afresh,
When too tired to finish the nearly finished.
We know about deadlines.
Tomorrow is Tuesday.
Tomorrow is always Tuesday.
Truth to tell,
Sometimes we fall asleep anyway.
Thomas Wolfe would say, Oh Lost.
But what the hell—
We can always read another poem by Robert Frost.
