Zumbro, Administration Committee chair
WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE the addition of a part-time assistant to the
OLLI staff. Diana Richards will be joining us on Tuesday, September
6th, just in time to hit the ground running and get up to speed before
the start of the fall semester.
She will be working approximately 20 hours a week
and will be primarily responsible for setting up classrooms, assisting
teachers with audio/visual equipment, and setting up refreshments in
the
social room.
Diana is a long-time resident of Northern Virginia,
currently living in Centreville. Previously she has held jobs as an
administrative assistant, being responsible for a wide variety of
duties. Most recently, she was employed as the customer service
representative at my homeowners' association office, where I recruited
her for the OLLI job.
Please stop by the office to introduce yourself to
Diana and welcome her to our staff. Back

SOME MEMBERS LIKED THE ELEPHANTS BEST—others favored the
giraffes. No,
they tadidn'tke a trip
to the Serengeti or the Washington zoo, but rather to the Hippodrome
Theater in Baltimore to see The Lion
King, the last OLLI special event of the summer session.
The August 6 all-day event was put together by the
City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department, which invited OLLI to
participate. Thirty-two OLLI members boarded a bus at Fairfax City Hall
at 10 AM and headed for Baltimore.
Prior to the performance, members had a few hours to explore
Lexington Market, lunch at the Inner Harbor, or simply stroll through
the Baltimore neighborhoods. The
Lion King was, of course, the highlight of the trip.
With a cast of forty actors who help bring the animals to life,
the award-winning performance is a grand spectacle of artistry,
puppetry, music and dance. A group of very happy OLLI members returned
to Fairfax at the end of the day. All were grateful to the City of
Fairfax and hopeful
that similar trips will be made available in the future. Back

AT ITS MEETING ON AUGUST 19, the Board approved the recommendation of
the Ad Hoc Executive Director Search Committee and agreed to offer the
position of OLLI-GMU executive director to Dr. Richard B. Chobot.
The Board also voted to adjust the budget
to support the executive director's attendance at the Elderhostel
Institute Network Mid-Atlantic Regional Lifelong Learning Institutes
2005 Conference to be held September 10-13, hosted by the LLI at the
University of North Carolina. Board members felt this would be an
essential learning experience about other LLIs in the region.
The next Board meeting will be Friday, September 16
at 10:00 AM at Tallwood. All OLLI members are welcome to attend.
Editor's Note.
Dick Chobot has accepted the position as executive director. If you
missed the president's message about our new executive director, you
may read it on the Publications
page of our Website (click the president's message dated August
25). Back

THE HISTORY CLUB AT OLLI, now in its ninth year, meets at Tallwood on
the first Wednesdays of each month to discuss topics of interest to
history buffs. Typically, one or more members will review a history
book, a historical site or any other topic or theme that has historical
content.
Participants are encouraged to engage in
discussion, such as by presenting historical facts or analysis,
personal experiences, pictures of a visit paid to a historical site,
archaeological information—in short, anything historical, broadly
defined.
The club
publishes a bimonthly newsletter.
|
Past topics have included "Famous and Infamous
Women," "Pandemics, Old and New," "British Cabinet War Rooms," "Post
9/11 National Policies," "Who is the Richest American Ever?" and
"Andrew
and Rachel Jackson and the Petticoat War."
The Club publishes a bimonthly newsletter and an
annual list of recent history books read by members. OLLI members are
welcome to attend any or all meetings. If you want to get notices of
meetings and the newsletter, send me an
email. Back

ALL OF US HAVE OCCASION TO EMAIL DOCUMENTS OR MESSAGES TO OTHERS. Here
are tips on making your emails “recipient-friendly.”
Tip #1: Avoid sending documents as attachments
unless the format is important or you want the recipient to respond by
inserting comments. The “recipient-friendly” way is to select and copy
the document's text and paste it into the body of your email message.
FORWARD
MESSAGES AS INLINE
TEXT...
|
and
be sure to check the status of urban
legends before forwarding them.
|
Tip #2: Forward email messages as
“inline text” rather than as attachments. Microsoft Outlook Express
uses inline text by default, but you can also set the preferences of
some other email programs to do this automatically. For example, in
Yahoo Mail, go to Mail Options/General Preferences, and under Message
Actions/Forwarding Messages, select “Forward as inline text.”
Tip #3: Think twice before forwarding
information that might not be true. First, check its validity by
searching the Urban
Legends Reference Pages. If the information is valid, you can feel
comfortable forwarding the message ... BUT, if the original information
is buried beneath many layers of forwarding actions, be "recipient
friendly" by copying the relevant text and pasting it into the body of
a new message.
FOLLOW THE ABOVE TIPS and the recipients of your
messages will thank you for being so thoughtful! Back
