SOMETHING NEW FOR PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS
From the executive
director
YOU
MAY HAVE NOTICED ON OUR WEB SITE or
in last week’s OLLI E-News
that we have a new option for people who are considering joining OLLI.
For a special introductory rate of $150, new members can register for
an unlimited number of courses at any of the three OLLI locations
during the spring 2009 term. During this time, these individuals will
enjoy all of the privileges of OLLI membership. Of course, we hope that
each of them will agree that OLLI is a great bargain … Where else can
you enjoy the collegial atmosphere of so many people who want to
participate just for the sheer joy of learning?
In order to continue membership, these new
members will just need to pay $250, which allows them full membership
for the next three terms – summer 2009, fall 2009, and winter 2010.
|
As a reminder, OLLI has had a long-standing
policy of allowing prospective members to attend two classes (or club
activities) in consecutive weeks at no charge. Following that period,
the individuals must become OLLI members in order to continue
participation. Individuals who are interested in this opportunity
should contact the OLLI office to determine if there is space available
in the class(es) that they are interested in visiting. |
If you are a
current member of OLLI, why not contact some of your friends and
neighbors and let them know about these options for prospective members?
And while you’re at it, give them a copy of our wonderful spring
catalog! Extra copies are available in the OLLI office as well as at
OLLI/Reston and OLLI/Loudoun.

THIS YEAR AT
OLLI, FRIDAY THE 13TH WAS A LUCKY DAY for members who
appreciate performance, fellowship, and caloric excess. Thanks go to
the Membership Committee, especially Chairperson Debbie Halverson, who
recruited musicians, poets, actors, and singers for the Valentine's Day
Ice Cream Social and Variety Show. Committee members decorated the
annex and TA-1 in red, provided a wandering clown (Carolyn Sanders) to
hand out candy kisses, and served pints, quarts, and gallons of ice
cream, sauces, and too many toppings to count.
For the first hour, 75 participants ate and
socialized in a crowded but festive TA-1. Then, following a few remarks
from President Pat Carroll, the Recorder Consort opened with several
spirited selections. Jack Underhill and Mike McNamara read their love
poems, including a couple addressed to their wives, a reminder to all
of the blessing of enduring love. George Ewing coaxed a mellow sound
out of his harmonica, and Norm Rosenberg showed that klezmer music can
be played on the recorder. Harriet Kaplan sang a charming rendition of
"Summertime" and led the group in the chorus of "Molly Malone." Newly
discovered talent Thom Clement played the piano and sang "Let Me Be," a
spoof on the demands of his job as our executive director.

OLLI
thespians can be expected to enliven any
gathering and did not disappoint. In the short comedy, Fear of Flying, a long-suffering
wife (Susanne Zumbro) eventually persuaded her blustering husband
(Gordon Canyock) to do what she wanted him to do in the first place.
Later, in a new interpretation of Shakespeare, a dashing but very short
Romeo (Thelma Weiner) and a lovely but very tall Juliet (Mike McNamara)
tried to embrace, giving new meaning to the words, "Romeo, Romeo,
wherefore art thou, Romeo?"
In addition, a photographer was present to
take Valentine photos of couples and friends. For most closely guessing
the number of candies in a jar, Charles Russo won a Snoopy doll holding
a Valentine heart. Donations of pocket change were collected to be sent
to the American Heart Association. Our emcee, Manny King Pablo, master
of lip-synchronized "Unforgettable" and "When I Fall in Love,"
commented at the close on all the OLLI talents that had been hiding
under (bushel) baskets. The audience at the Valentine's Day celebration
was delighted to see their bright lights.

MEET NEW PEOPLE, HAVE
FUN & HELP OLLI
Your help is needed for the May 8 Silent
Auction
By John Woods, Development Committee Chair
THE
MAJOR REVENUE-GENERATING EVENT for
the Friends of OLLI Fund is the Silent Auction. Friends of OLLI funds
provide improvements to our equipment and furniture and scholarships
for needy Mason students as well as other items. Last
year’s Silent Auction was a fun
social event which brought in roughly $3,000 at Tallwood and $550 at
Reston for the Friends of OLLI Fund.
This year the Silent
Auction, combined again with OLLI's Annual
Membership Meeting and a picnic, will be held
on Fri, May 8. We need your
help to make this year’s Silent
Auction a success.
Specifically, we need volunteers who will help
us--
- Process
the contributions given by members.
- Contact
outside organizations to request
contributions.
- Accept
the contributions and do the needed
processing the day before the auction.
- Set
up the room, including placement of tables
and donated items.
- Oversee
the items and answer questions during
the auction.
- Assist
in the check out process.
The
volunteers last year met
new OLLI members and had a lot of fun helping make the auction a
success. We need more volunteers this year. We
hope you will come to our Silent Auction organizing
meeting at Tallwood
next Thu, Feb
26, at 1:00 when we will set up teams to work
on the auction. You can also share your experiences
with
similar activities and suggest ways to make our auction
more effective and efficient. See you on the 26th!
RERUNNING OF A LEGENDARY COURSE
"Photographing the Cold War"
By Michael
Coyne, OLLI Webmaster
IN AN
OLLI E-NEWS ARTICLE LAST NOVEMBER, Program Committee Chair
Kathryn Russell invited OLLI members "to provide input regarding
courses you'd like to see repeated." She listed a number of reasons
members might have missed a course when it was originally presented.
One reason she didn't mention was that you might not even have been a
member of OLLI at the time.
Such would be the case for possibly over half
of all Tallwood and Reston members depending on when the original class
was held. Rerunning a legendary Tallwood or Reston course at Loudoun
would certainly be of interest to all OLLI members who have joined
since then. But they would need to know that the course is being redone.
In that spirit I would like to call the
attention of Tallwood and Reston members to a rerunning of Garrett
Cochran's course on three spy-satellite photographic programs the
government ran during the cold war. These programs were extremely
expensive, technically advanced, and made an immense contribution to
U.S. intelligence. Garry's course, "Photographing the Cold War," will
be presented again at Loudoun during the spring term. Garry says he has
reorganized the four-session lecture he first presented in the fall of
2005 to include additional information.
Check the spring catalog here
for the course description and look for course L805 when you register.
Remember, it is a free course for full OLLI members.
