PEOPLE WHO ARE CHANGING YOUR RETIREMENT
From the Executive Director
 By Thom Clement, Executive Director
RECENTLY I READ AN ARTICLE in the Wall Street Journal entitled "12 People Who Are Changing Your Retirement." Each of the individuals who are described in the article is making an important contribution to the rapidly changing field of active living during the retirement years.
Of course, my personal favorite is Bernard Osher, whose foundation supports nearly 120 lifelong learning institutes across the country, including our own. As you would expect in our capitalist environment, some of them have a product or service that they are marketing. Others are motivated by inspiring people they have met. What each of these people has in common is a realization that our society must invest in the quality of life for older adults.
The myths and stereotypes about "old age" are crumbling all around us. OLLI members are in the forefront of a tremendous movement that is exciting to behold. We are inventing "lifelong learning" as we go along. Hold on and enjoy the ride!
You can read the Wall Street Journal article at this Web page. OLLI'S RESOURCE GROUPS: LOOKING FORWARD
How you can impact the OLLI program
By Kathryn Russell, Program Committee Chair
BY NOW YOU'VE HAD A CHANCE TO BROWSE through the beautiful OLLI spring catalog and have finished making your selections. Deciding among 63 courses, 15 special events, and 12 on-going activities was difficult, no doubt. You’ll be interested to know that most of our program is the result of the collective thinking of OLLI’s resource groups.
While you were making your choices for the spring session, program planners were already thinking ahead to summer and fall sessions. The volunteers in each subject area meet two or three times a year to share and implement ideas for upcoming sessions. Participation in the resource groups is the best way to influence program content.
Below you’ll find a list of resource groups as well as people to contact. Notice that most of these groups have announced their upcoming meeting dates and times. Others will announce later. Those that have already met will welcome ideas and will make certain to add your name to the list for next time. Resource group leaders welcome your ideas at the meetings or by email should you be unable to attend.
We invite all OLLI members to join one of these groups and work toward the common goal of maintaining OLLI’s superior program. At these gatherings you can look forward to lively conversation, sharing of ideas, and the camaraderie of creative people who are excited about developing plans for future courses.

OLLI IN RESTON SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

APPROXIMATELY 20 PERCENT OF OLLI'S MEMBERS live in proximity to the Reston area of Fairfax County. Considering the area's population of over 60,000 and its booming business environment, there is a great opportunity for OLLI to experience significant growth in its membership and program offerings.
In order to support the OLLI courses and activities in Reston, we need additional volunteers to serve as part of a resource group. Our goal is to have at least one or two people from the Reston area actively involved in each resource group listed above.
For more information, please contact Al Roe by phone or email.

HOW TO EXPRESS YOUR VIEWS ABOUT OLLI
Questions/Comments/Suggestions
PUBLICLY:
Email your "Letter to the Editor" (see recent sample) or "Letter to Ms. Ollie Ettakit" (see recent sample) to the editor. Anonymous submissions are acceptable if you provide contact information so we can verify that you are an OLLI member. Whenever an official response to a letter to the editor is clearly appropriate, the editor will obtain and publish the OLLI response in the same issue so members will have more complete information and a balanced picture of the matter.
PRIVATELY:
     Contact any Board member, committee or resource group chair, or the executive director;
     Send an email to the entire Board (email the editor or the office to have your message forwarded to all members of the Board);
Submit a suggestion online or in the box in the Tallwood social room; or
Contact the office by email or phone (703-503-3384).

OLLI SINGLES GROUP
THE FIRST MEETING of the OLLI Singles Group will be held in TA-1 on Thu, Mar 13, at 10:00. About 30 of you signed up for this, so please come and bring your ideas with you so that we can get organized and plan some fun activities.

EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FRENCH PAINTING
SPECIAL SESSION
ON TUE, MAR 18, FROM 10:00 TO NOON at Tallwood, participants in the upcoming 18th Century French Painting Study Group (course #102), and any other interested OLLI folks, will have the opportunity to view and, as time permits, discuss several short DVDs on 18th Century French Painting.
These DVDs each take a slightly different approach to the subject and should prove an invaluable introduction to our study of these artists. It will also give participants an opportunity to select which artist they would like to take the lead in exploring during the class.
Participation is optional and is open to anyone interested in this period. Hope to see you there.
-- Bob Lawshe, Course Facilitator

HAWKES FUND--GMU FOUNDATION
Honoring Dr. Robert Hawkes

Dr. Robert Hawkes
THE GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY Department of History and Art History indicates that Dr. Robert Hawkes--who retired two years ago after over 30 years at Mason and who was probably their most beloved and popular teacher--has cancer. President Merten has endorsed the creation of an endowed professorship in Dr. Hawkes' name, a position intended to reward and promote excellent undergraduate teaching.
If you would like to help recognize Bob's 37 years of outstanding service to Mason as an expert in southern and Virginia history, you can contribute to the endowment by mail or online. The mail address is GMU Foundation, 4400 University Drive, MS1A3, Fairfax, VA 22030. Please make your check out to the GMU Foundation and indicate on the check that it is for the Hawkes Fund and you are an OLLI donor. For online donations you can go to give.gmu.edu and fill out the online form after clicking "Make a Gift." Again, be sure to indicate the Hawkes fund and that you are an OLLI donor in the comments section.

About OLLI E-News. OLLI E-News, OLLI's weekly newsletter, is emailed to OLLI members with email addresses on Fridays. When classes are in session, printed copies of this newsletter are distributed in classrooms, primarily for members without email. Comments, suggestions or complaints? Please contact the OLLI E-News Editor or the Communications Committee Chair, Gordon Canyock.

Submissions. We encourage members to submit news items, articles and photos for this newsletter; deadline to the editor is 7:00 PM Wed (Mon for letters to the editor for which an OLLI response is appropriate) for that week's issue. Please limit articles to about 250 words. Submit material to editor Rod Zumbro (email rzumbro@gmu.edu, phone 703-569-2750); email strongly preferred.

Note about HTML graphicsIf you do NOT see photos and clickable links in this message, you might want to ask a teenaged grandchild or a neighborhood teenager or college student to fix things for you. Or you could change your email settings yourself. Here's how to view html-formatted messages like this newsletter in five popular email systems:
Microsoft Outlook Express and Windows Mail. Click Tools; select Options; in the Read tab, uncheck "Read all messages in plain text."
Mozilla Thunderbird. Click Tools; select Options and click the Privacy icon; click the General tab. Uncheck "Block loading of remote images" and uncheck "Block Javascript." Click OK. Now click View; select "Message Body As ... Original HTML" (not Plain Text). Also in View, select "Display Attachments Inline" so that selection is checked.
Yahoo Mail. Click Mail Options/General Preferences; under Security, uncheck "Block HTML graphics in email messages from being downloaded."
AOL. Upgrade, if possible, to an AOL version above 5.0.

Read the Latest Issue Before Email Distribution. Eager to read the latest news from OLLI? The new weekly issue of OLLI E-News is usually posted to the OLLI Website some time Thursday evening. So Thursday night or first thing Friday morning, just go to http://www.olli.gmu.edu/pubs.htm#enews, where you will find a list of the last 12 issues, and click the issue with Friday's date.

GMU Webmail. If OLLI E-News is being sent to your gmu.edu email address, we recommend against using GMU Webmail (i.e., iPlanet "Messenger Express") to read this newsletter unless you are using Firefox as your browser; in Firefox, just click the text/html link to view the newsletter. This does not normally work with Internet Explorer (although you may be able to make it work by clicking Open after clicking the text/html link and then selecting Internet Explorer as the program to use to view the link).
You could forward the newsletter to your alternate Web-based email account such as Yahoo Mail or Hotmail and read it there ... or read it online at the OLLI Website each Friday.
Perhaps the easiest solution for those of you with gmu.edu email accounts is to configure your desktop email system such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Windows Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve mail sent to your gmu.edu address. To do this, see these instructions.
