Kathleen
Meyer
Kathleen Meyer joined OLLI in 2003 after
retiring from
twenty-four years of teaching English for the Fairfax County Public
School
System. Soon after joining OLLI, she was recruited to serve on the
membership
committee where she worked to increase membership through publicity.
Later she
agreed to be the coordinator of the Music Sampler class. In addition
she has
participated as a learner in classes of every category. She feels that
the
curricula offered at OLLI allow enrollees to fill in the gaps in their
education and to keep abreast with recent developments in their fields
of
expertise.
In the community Kathleen works one day a
month for FISH
(For Immediate Sympathetic Help), an ecumenical organization that in
conjunction with Fairfax County Social Services assists deserving
clients with
rent, utilities, prescriptions, food, or possibly a ride to an
appointment. At
her church she sings in the sanctuary choir and is a hand bell ringer.
On
occasion she writes articles for GMU Friends of Music and supports the
group in
the role of "meet and greet."
Kathleen earned a B.A. in English from Rutgers
University. In addition she has taken courses at Pennsylvania State
University, University
of Pennsylvania, George Mason University, Virginia Tech, and University
of
Virginia. She earned a special endorsement to teach gifted and talented
students. Charlie Meyer and Kathleen will celebrate their fiftieth
wedding
anniversary this June. They have three grown and married children and
six
grandchildren.
Kathleen believes that OLLI is a dynamic
organization that gets its spirit from
its membership and the courses and camaraderie it has to offer. It is
important to continue to offer the quality and variety of courses to
appeal to
the many members.
